Sunroof or not...?

I'm aware that there is a glass sunroof thread but my post is probably more about the sunroof option on the 991 in general.

I've got a platinum silver 991 S with carrera S wheels in platinum finish on order. I've also got it with the glass sunroof. I'm having serious 2nd thoughts about the glass roof option now. I'm not convinced that it looks good on lighter cars or even if I were to change the silver to white thereby highlighting the black and white. I'm not even convinced whether the roof design is particularly functional.

I may just cancel the sunroof altogether. I only have a day or so to firm it up so any input from those who have it or have ordered it on their 991 would be appreciated.

is the question not whether you would miss not having a sunroof (glass or steel)?

I drove a 991 with steel roof fully open at high speeds (above 80mph), and there was barely any buffeting or noise. Very impressive.

I usually enjoy the sunroof, especially on the 911, a lot because with both side windows opened, the sound of the engine/exhaust is just better. Smiley This is actually the main reason I always order a sunroof. If you worry about weight or stiffness, you shouldn't (many track cracks blame the sunroof for worse performance on the track but I guess they should rather look into the mirror... Smiley ).

The roof looks very nice on white, black and red cars but I'm not so sure with blue(ish) and brownish colors.

sfo, thanks for you reply. I guess that is the question. On all my P cars, save for the GT3, I've had a sunroof and as RC rightly mentions it's nice opening it mainly for the sound etc. Would I miss it?..... probably. Hmmmm.

I'm not even sure whether my order can be changed.... better call the dealer!

RC, my thanks for your reply. For this car I'm not going to be to anal about weight etc. Its not going to be tracked. I guess a midway solution would be to opt for a steel roof and not the glass.

A steel sunroof would be my choice. I've only ever ordered a new Porsche without a sunroof once...and actually missed it quite a lot.

I love it at night in summer ... a gentle breeze while driving around town at night ...

You can also listen to the sports exhaust (if you have that option).

I have no regrets getting a sunroof on my 911.

I like mine. Especially nice to have the options - closed, fully open or rear popped modes.

I hardly ever use mine . I force myself to open it sometimes, but am always disappointed. If there is sun , it' s too hot and if it s to get air, it does not give enough . I much prefer using the side window. As to giving an ' open feeling' , it also does not work as it is far too small. On the 991 it got bigger, maybe it is better. But personally I would not get it.

Thanks for the comments. I think the safe option for me is to go with the standard sunroof. I also opted to go with the Sport Exhaust. After some hassle (as the order had just gone into lock mode) I changed my 991S to include the following add-ons to the standard US models:

Platinum Silver Metallic

20-inch Carrera S wheel

Wheels painted Platinum (semi-gloss)

Black standard interior

Sunroof (steel)

Porsche Doppelkupplung (PDK)

Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) with PASM sport suspension

That is going to be one very sweet car. I frequently pop my roof in the back to catch the snap of the standard exhaust on shifts. You will get the full, snap crackle pop of the PSE and never regret it!
