Since I started this thread, here are some of my thoughts about the new 911, only regarding the optical impression of course, I'm sure it will be a blast to drive:
Is it a good looking car? Well, I'd say yes. It does look good, it looks like a 911, unmistakenly 911. I'm a bit surprised that it looks so much like a 997. Some may say this is a good thing, since it's an advantage for current 997 owners. Some may have the opinion that Porsche just wasn't bold enough to try something a bit more revolutionary, especially after the fantastic 918 concept. Anyway, for me the reason why the 991 looks more like a 997.3 than a totally new car (which it really is) is the following: the 997 is perfect as it is, so it wasn't easy for Porsche to improve without making mistakes. The difference between the situation when I saw the first 997 pics and now is, that in case of the 997 I instantly thought: wow, this thing is perfect, there is absolutely nothing I would change. This impression hasn't changed over the years, the facelift just gave the 997 a little bit different look, no better no worse. In case of the 991 there are some things, that I don't like. Don't like the lettering at the rear, totally unecessary except for the Chinese market perhaps. The rest of the rear is nice, but is it better than that of the 997? I'd say no. The side view is very nice, so are the new wheels. Also no problems with the "new" headlights (to me they look almost identical to the 997 lights), but I find the shape of the front indicators/DRL just plain wrong. They are too long at the outside, since they protrude above the air intakes and moreover they have a odd look in this area. And they are too short at the inside, since they start somewhere in the middle of the air intake. I think Joosts photoshop looks sooo much better in this respect (perhaps a little bit too much 996 but still so much better than the real thing) and I'm absolutely sure that the front intakes and indicators/DRL is the area where we will see the most significant changes when the facelift is due in a couple of years. I'm also not the biggest fan of the door mounted side mirrors, especially with this big black plastic base, but no doubt you can have this part in body colour for some small extra cash. Of course I can live with the mirrors, I just don't see any aesthetical advantage when they are door mounted. When it comes to the interior I must admit, that I absolutely love the interior of the 997.2. It's basic, it's simple, yet it does the job well and the little accents introduced with the facelift like black instead of grey, more silver and of course the new paddle steering wheel just do it for me. I have no problem with the interior of the 991, I don't mind if it looks like in the Cayenne or Panamera and surely you will get used to the new looks, but do I need it? Again I'd say no, don't need that big centre console (can't see much resemblance with the CGT here BTW), don't need that meant-to-be-stylish door inserts, don't need the new arrangement of the buttons and an electronic handbrake and never needed a wart, but especially I don't need a wart with a foreskin.
So yes, I like the 991, it surely is a good looking car, it's definitely a 911, but I would not necessarily separate from my 997 for it, especially if someone owns a car like a GTS, 4 GTS, Turbo S and of course all the GT-models.
BTW, not sure about that 6 cm increase in length, but I'm definitely happy that it got not wider than it's predecessor.
