ISUK:
Nick,
The age of the Stradale was exactly why I posted about it. To prove that it had managed to go through six years without incident then one silly mistake by it's owner - not a build fault or mechanical issue - nearly torched it. Who's to say that something similar didn't happen to these new cars? The point is none of us know what caused these fires yet as usual when confronted by such a scene the usual old cliches/fears come trotting out.
I've got an 01 Modena that i've been driving for the past 9 years. I've got almost 70,000km on it so far. I did have minor problems here and there but nothing major.
ISUK, My delivery date for the spider is June. So i guess i'm good
nberry:
Iain, did you get your car?
They were a third of the way through the harness swap over at close of play yesterday Nick. Assuming there are no unexpected problems following fitment and testing I hope to get the car by this coming Friday.
In the meantime I've got myself a scant consolation prize by a full day's test drive in a new Cayenne on Tuesday. I was supposed to be confirming my GT3 order at the same time but I'll be cancelling it in all probability as I don't think I'd ever use it with the 458 in my garage.Plus I'd hate to buy it then have to come on here saying "Nick, you bought the wrong Beetle.... the GT3 is soooo much more fun for less money than the turbo and has a far stronger residual"
Things are definately slow out there in terms of sales. My Porsche dealer is desperate to sell me anything and I had my local Lamborghini dealer call me yesterday under the pretence of "updating their records" and asking me what car(s) I currently own and am I interested in being sent information on new Lamborghini models.
Iain, my wife bought the car and as far as she is concerned residuals are irrelevant.
I put her on a three year lease and after three years she turns the car and buys another one. That is my fate. She is really enamored with the Turbo and if she is happy I am happy.
Regarding slowing sales, the same is happening here. Many believe the US economy has not made a full recovery because the higher earners/rich have also curtailed their spending. It is estimated that the rich account for almost 40% of the total spending in the US. That has fallen to below 30% since the 2008 economic crisis. If they increase our taxes by letting our tax cuts passed in 2004 to expire at the end of the year I am afraid the economy is headed for rough times again.
Nick,
I was just teasing you for fun on a slow Saturday afternoon. I know you have the turbo on a lease
With Obama at the helm I think your taxes there are only headed one way and it certainly isn't down. I'm convinced he is a terminator unit sent back in time from the future by a mad grandchild of George W Bush who is intent on making his gran'pappy look like a competent world statesman to current day voters. I think this mad plan is starting to work
hahahah...it looks like you have to do with italian politicians....haahhaha
the only cars always working in our family are the fiats!!! audi/ mercedes/porsche that we have have always had a problem that I needed to call the truck service!!!!! hahahahha in your eyese it can seems like not true....but that's the fact in my experience.....
so I guess that nowadays it is quite impossible to generalise as in the past!
ciao!

The game has certainly changed. Things can no longer be so black and white indeed. Today more people and organizations are involved in car making. I hope Ferrari resolves this issue asap though because there should be a difference between a fiat and ferrari on fire...
indeed shifting is ancient technology - so is a fuel burning engine.. I happen to like both :)

ISUK, did you already place your order for the Spider??
.... and also for the 458 Evoluzione (or whatever they end up calling the Scuderia replacement)
Have you delivered the 458, yet, Iain?

If you have a look at the pictures from these two links, one might think Ferrari still hasn't solved the problem that their cars are prone to catch fire...

You should better take pics of your car before it's too late then.
It's really shameful that Ferrari (and Lambo) continue to have these fires considering that both brands are now owned by large parent companies with extensive product testing protocols and machinery.
Frankly, I'm surprised they haven't been hit with a product liability lawsuit at this point.
It's 2010 for god's sake. Under normal conditions, there's zero reason why their cars should still be catching fire spontaneously.
...the only thing stopping you in all likelihood, is you!

Conviniently forgot to add Porsche there as well, haven't we?

Ferrari is finally looking in to all the 458 that have caught on fire

I think Ferrari/FIAT are going to have to eat it on this one. There is simply no way you can blame this many fires on the driver(s).
There's either an engineering issue or a supplier/part issue.
But F is going to have to reach into their checkbook and either refund money or make available replacements, which means people already on the list are going to get their delivery date pushed back.
...the only thing stopping you in all likelihood, is you!
