That is a very good question! I have gone for metallic black for now, but wondering if I should have white again like my original 135i. Then again the orange is unique. Help!

Black is mean. (I would choose it personally). It has its drawbacks: Must be kept spotless to really look nice.
White: Not my cup of tea. Too bland. (I don't like white on any car)
Orange: Very nice. Especially if one is of a "younger " age.
Oh, and BTW - This is the nicest BMW I have seen in a long time. Fantastic car!

Thanks for posting the road test video It's great to see that BMW - M are at long last returning to the raw and focused cars that M always used to define, rather than the barge like overweight cars that they have produced recently. Let's hope they produce more like it! 
Shame that there is no DCT version though. But that would only tread too far into M3 territory I guess....

I doubt it, the direction their cars are going. Why have a V8 in a 3 series and 1800kg instead of developing on the E30 legend?
The 1M falls in the too little too late (in the model life) category IMO.

Weight increase has more to do with regulations than the engine. Higher crash standard dictates more metal in the structure which increase weight. Increase weight from that means a more powerful engine and a V8 has better chance than a I6. And in reality the current V8 engine by itself in M3 isn't that much heavier than the twin-turbo I6 in a 335i.
What BMW needs is to explore composite materials, like plastic and carbon fiber for hoods, trunk and fenders, light weight carbon shell seats, thinner glass or plastic glass, etc. They are already onto something with the carbon roof. A full carbon dash will weight a fraction of the current leather one, carbon door panels same thing, carbon center console, etc. Forged magnesium wheels will weight a bit less than aluminum ones too, carbon brakes less than steel ones, carbon suspensions over aluminum ones. Many many ways to reduce weight, but at what cost?
But then again these exotic material will raise the cost of the car and price it out of range for normal people.
