Put that down to the "brilliance" of the marketing dept! First launch the new 987 Boxster, which they know is fabulous, establish its credentials, and then launch the stiffer, more sorted, slightly higher engine capacity Coupe! But that will cost Sir a premium, since it is more powerful and better to drive than our current mid-engined offering, the Boxster! Then after the dust settles, slam in the 3.4l engine in the Boxster when no one was looking, and laugh all the way to the bank!!
Incidentally, I got caught out by all this marketing coup - I bought the 3.2 987 Boxster in 2006, just as the Cayman was being launched, as I wanted a convertible, and then 6 months into its ownership, I found out that the new versions of the Boxster now come with the same 3.4 engine as the Cayman. 
So I agree with you about feeling that it's all a bit contrived.

That would be most interesting to test: what effect does PDK have on the lap times. Still slightly negative (I would assume) - or already positive

Sport Auto tested two examples of Cayman S with PDK already and one example with manual gearbox. All other options were the same: LSD, PASM, SC and 19" wheels.
First example of Cayman S PDK Hockenheim time was 1.13,9min, second one achieved 1.14,2min on slightly different ambinet temperature.
Manual Cayman S achieved 1.14,3min on conditions that were almost the same as on first Cayman S PDK test.
According to Sport Auto on Hockenheim PDK version is from 0.2s-0.5s faster then manual depending on ambient conditions. We can assume that difference on Nordschleife is actually bigger(IMHO PDK is about 5s faster)...

Kreso, that would actually be good news! If PDK was on the same level (or even slightly more efficient) than manual that would be a major step forward 
Also, Reginos is right: a less professional driver should be slower without PDK if even SportAuto just matches PDK results with a manual car (or even falls short of that)
