Wow...85000 USD...this is insane. In Germany, the X5M is around 105000 EUR incl. 19% VAT.
Let me do some thinking:
85000 USD divided with 1.3 would equal at around 65400 EUR.
Add 19% VAT to it, this makes aprox. 78000 EUR.
So BMW sells the X5 M in the US around 17000 EUR cheaper than in Germany.
Considering customs fee, transport and some minor mods, I doubt that importing the X5 M from the US would save me really a lot of money, especially since my dealer is willing to give me a good rebate.
Still...for 78000 EUR, the X5 M would sell like warm bread...even in fuel prices scorched Europe.
I'm seriously thinking about replacing my Cayenne Turbo S with a BMW X5 M, not only because of the price tag but also because of public perception. Just imagine adding a 3.0d badge to this car and removing the M insignias. People would never ever make remarks regarding our SUV. Seriously: I think the X5 M is going to be our next family car. Unless Porsche really surprises me with a design I can't resist on their next generation Cayenne.

The Panamera Turbo was on my mind for some while too but considering its price tag and the look of the Panamera (ugly rear, huge shape), I'm pretty sure I'm not getting one any time soon. Maybe after a facelift?!
With some luck, we're going to be able to drive a Panamera Turbo for a whole day or so any time soon and I can't exclude that I'm changing my mind. Still: I need a more "subtle" family car and I'm not sure the Panamera Turbo would be the right choice.
On my current future "family car" list are: next gen Cayenne Turbo (S), Audi Q7 V12 TDi, Audi RS6 Avant and BMW X5M, maybe even X6M if my wife insists.

go for the X6...you will not look back.
Problem(s) with X6:
1. looks (too "sporty", too "special")
2. only four seats (my wife needs to be able to take her parents AND the kids with her at the same time, so five seats are pretty much mandatory)
3. luggage room is pretty small, even compared to the X5
4. the rear of the X6 isn't a beauty but this is only a minor problem

I sure hope the X5M comes with the 7 seat option, with 2 kids and their child seats, the rear bench is for them only on the ML63, there is no room for anyone between them, but with the 7 seat option I can at least move my older son with his booster to the back row and seats 5 or 6. Weight shouldn't be a problem as the back row is design for kids anyway.
One problem with the current crop of SUV is that their trunk space is too small and narrow, I had a first gen X5 before and the trunk while small, is wide enough to put golf clubs, so 4 person and 4 sets can go in no problem. My ML63 is too narrow, woods has to come out to fit them in and even so, 4 sets is a tight fit. Same deal with the current X5.
Having said that, the first Bangle 745i has the perfect trunk, 4 sets can go in without trouble and with room for duffle bags, and it carryings 4 adults in comfort, perfect golfing car. Same cannot be said about the new 7, trunk got smaller.
Seems like car designers forgot about golfers and their need, I am still looking for the perfect car/truck for golfing, and room for 'family outings'.
Haha, it's was only for sale 1 year here, they sold so little I couldn't even find one the next year. Actually I am still looking for one.
R63 suffers the same failure of not allowing more than 1 set of golf clubs to fit in sideways, the GL-class has the room but there is no AMG version, I pretty much called my MB salesman every other week to have him bug MB to make a GL63.
I am truely missing my first gen Bangle 745i, if only the Alpina B7 came out earlier in the model cycle I would have been in heaven for finding a perfect golfing/family car. These didn't appear in the Canadian market until the last year of the model cycle.

palenimbus:
There is the G63 yeh? It's got that rugged cool thing going on
Don't you rather mean the G55? The G63 has less power to my knowledge or did Mercedes introduce an updated version?
A GL63 AMG was always in the pipeline as far as I heard but it seems it didn't get the green light yet, I wonder why?! A GL63 would be interesting for me too, especially since Mercedes dealers over here in Germany are throwing around with huge rebates.
The Audi Q7 V12TDi is actually also a pretty interesting product but a bit pricey for my taste. What is very interesting: around January 2009, dealers in Germany were offering slightly used Q7 V12 with low mileage (usually 50-1000 km) for around 105-110 k EUR incl. 19% VAT (new price in the 135-140 k range). Now the same cars are selling for 130-135 k, almost the new car price tag. Apparently the demand has increased.
Right now, the X5 M seems to be the best choice for me, the car isn't flashy, it has plenty of power and for around 100 k EUR, it is a pretty interesting offer. I may wait a couple of months after introduction to make a sweat deal on a dealer car though. If the X5 M doesn't sell too well, many dealers over here will have cars in stock and they usually want to move them fast.
This is how I got my wife's BMW M3 Cab DKG, the car was the dealer's first car and it was in the showroom for a month and nobody bought it or was even interested. Result: 13% rebate (by that time, there was no economic crisis...unfortunately ) and a pretty sweet lease deal, so my wife was very happy (she took a lease for her business). My BMW dealership sales man was also fantastic (he usually sells Mini), he tried everything to please me (well...in the means of getting me a good deal ).
I'm not under pressure, my 997 Turbo lease runs out in two years, our Cayenne Turbo S still smokes almost anything on the Autobahn and is therefore still fun to drive, so I have time to think and to make a wise decision. Well...wise decision...I usually get my cars with my heart, not my brain.

there is no G63...the G Wagon only comes in G55.
at one stage i was considering it but hesitated because i was not sure if the will drop in the 6.3 engine or not.
so fgar this did not happen.
there was a 12 cylinder 6.3 and a brabus special version with 12 cylinders at 300k euro.
G55 is a interesting truck, not the prettiest but it has it's charm and i like it, my wife hated the styling thought. In contrast to intouch1, I like the 55 engine, if I have a choice, I would want that over the 63 anyday.
Again I am in agreement with RC, I have a excellent relationship with my BMW dealer and they sure gives out sweet deals, last year they offered me a 335xi sedan for 0.9% leasing with a 66% residual, +$4000 dollar off the list price, needless to say I didn't turn it down. That little rocket has become my wife's daily runaround car, I like it too, small, powerful and actually pretty good on gas, mind you that's relatively speaking consider what's in my garage.
They have already offered me one of their first X5M arriving later this year, but they too cannot confirm about the 7 seat option, seems like no one really knows.
i think the 63 engine would suit the G-wagon better cause it simply has bigger lungs than the 55.
i drove a buddys sl55 and the engine certainly is good. in the sl it's better than the 63. not so the ret of the car......
55 has more low end torque to move that heavy beast off the line, so at least imo is better suited to the G-wagon. 63 engine is more of a rpm screamer, when I step on the gas pedal on the ML63, it always takes a little bit of time to get going, no such problem in the CLS55, step on it and it goes right here right now.
55 with the 5-speed is a perfect match, 63 with the 7-speed I always suspect MB electronically limits the torque output in lower gears to protect the gearbox. It's just never feels it has that much torque at the low end.
Depending on the tune, 55 engine makes peak power between 450-507hp at 6000rpm, 516lb-ft of torque at 2750rpm. With 479lb-ft already at 2000rpm. that's more than the peak tq of the 63 engine. Like all forced induction engine, the torque curve is flat as a pancake.
63 engine makes 525hp at 6800rpm and 465 at 5200rpm, gains a few ponies over the 55 but 50lb-ft less peak and with a typical nautral breathing curved torque curve. It doesn't really start pulling until around 3000 rpm.
They have different style, 63 is a screamer that likes rev, 55 is more of a diesel that runs out of breath early.

You won;t be able to. Have you tried looking out of the back window? Did Bangle use the back window of the Murcielago for inspiration?
I think an X5M would be cool to a point where it might be a little easier to be seen driving one than my C2S Cab.
