    DFI not reliable yet !!?

My car suddently stoped  while driving at around 80 km/h  on a country road. The car would start, but then stop again nearly immediatly. Had to call Porsche assistance. My car was put on a truck and sent to the garage.

The first informations a got : my DFI is broken. It has to be replaced.

Will ask for more detailed infos when I' ll pick the car up gain.

friend of mine had the exact same thing on his 1st generation DFI BMW 730 d.

we were on the highway and the car suddenly shut off.  fuel injectors were the problem. they seized and no more diesel was being injected into combustion chambers. was a costly repair but was done 'kulanz' by BMW cause the car was out of warranty.

Re: DFI not reliable yet !!?

These failures are always disconcerting when they happen on the road in a potentially hazardous environment. I suppose we are going to be beta testing the DFI and PDK. I had hoped this new 9A1 would be simpler and potentially less prone to issues than the M96/M97 but it seems that each new generation of technology brings with it a new set of issues. The valve carbon build up seems to be another potential gremlin. Fortunately we have a few years of warranty to sort this out.  Thanks, will be interested to hear the diagnosis.

These high pressure pumps are made by Bosch I think, for most car manufacturers using DFI. So it is a matter of a supplier part failure. Nothing much Porsche can do about it, besides pressing for better quality.

I remember some time ago when Common Rail Diesel engines were new on the market, a large number of Bosch high presure pumps for those engines, failed as well.

It's not where you're going, it's how you get there that counts

Re: DFI not reliable yet !!?

It sounds like a high-pressure fuel pump issue. PAG has been replacing these or parts inside for early production cars.

I'm not sure if you recall but when 996.2 was introduced there was some issue with something new in the engine.

I remember that certain speed (I believe 35 or 40 mph) while making left turn (only left turn) the engine would die.  Porsche had to release a software update which fixed the problem.

I wonder if that was oil starvation being reported... and they just silenced the warning. Smiley

Yes, it is the high pressure fuel pumps that have failed. I  will ask what has exactly happened. It did not worry me too much as I was only going to be late for a  'not so important business' meeting, and I got a replacement car in the next our. It could of been much more annoying, like stuck in the middle of the Ring, 600 km away from my home, or on a remote track in France.....

When your car is in the shop ask them about gunk clogging the backs of intake valves and what they are going to do about it.

Was going to suggest the same thing.... However can we be sure this problem exists on 911 ? as all pictures i have seen are Cayenne or Audi engines...

Just wondering if their was an easy way to check this without removing the cylinder head. What about checking the clean return (back to the inlet) on the oil mist collector. If this has gunk then i guess you can be sure the inlet valves will have...

GNIL, I hope your car is back on the road soon mate, i would not worry to much about it being a design fault at this stage (Until others start reporting), as yours is the first one with this fault i have seen. What is the mileage of your car, and do you do a lot of slow around town driving  ?

Mine has almost 5000 miles on the clock and thus far been fine. The only problem i had was a water pump problem, but that was replaced.

Keep us all informed on the progress and the final diagnosis.. Watching this thread with deep interest !

Mine has now 11000 km . I had no other problems. And  I drive about 1/3 rd in slow town traffic, 1/3 on higway and 1/3 on country roads. Mostly short trips.

They are not worried with that anymore, they told me. according to them, It was a problem on the 964 mainly.

Re: DFI not reliable yet !!?

Finally the problem was the mechanical pump ( they are two pumps, one electronic and one mechanic ) ,  before the injectors. That problem is the same one as on the Cayenne.

Re: DFI not reliable yet !!?

Gnil: So are you saying they replaced/repaired the HPFP (high-pressure fuel pump)? Was the repair done with new design parts, designed to resolve the problem?

I would take the reply you got re intake valve gunk, not being a problem since the 964, with a large grain of salt. Are they saying that because it is true or because they have not dealt with it yet? It is a real issue w/ many DFI engines, namely from Audi and BMW and it has been reported on Cayenne DFI engines. Isn't it an issue for sure on the 997.2 DFI?

Did they reflash your PDK controller w/ new software which has been reported to fix some issues?
