Whoopsy:
5er still has the ugliest headlamp shape, angel-eye or not, as if the designers were blind when they design it.
Maybe the design-blindness was the result of a virus.
The virus has definitely spread to Nissan. It seems to have mutated a bit too.

Looks like the "angel eyes" are gone? Can it be true?!?
IMO, it would certainly be a step in the right direction.
i disagree, in any other car angel-eyes looks very tunner and ricer, but its a part of the whole bmw thing. i think if they considered taking them off they should recap on that. i would keep them just for the simple reason of letting others know they were the originals.

I don't understand meaning of this topic... This photoshop has nothing to do with real car, isn't even close and is at least 4 years old. So I guess this is just another BMW bashing thread.
MMD: you are correct, I think you've found the ugliest.
RC: yes first gen 996/Boxster headlamps is bad, but the facelifted one is perfect, especially on the Turbo, I positively LOVED that design, I wished Porsche had kept it for 997, alas, you diehards convinced Porsche to go back to round ones :)

Nah..., not bashing.
I'm one of many who are on the sidelines, and not gonna buy another BMW until they suppress the Bangle Idiom more.
Was hoping this was the beginning of less grandiose fabulousity in their styling.
I was able to "forgive" the 996/986 headlights since as the story goes (I think I read it in the car mags of the 996 era), Porsche had to reduce costs of those cars to survive. The one-piece slide-in features of those units made them less expensive to build and therefore contributed to the success and survival of Porsche at the time.
If real-life cost or manufacturing practicalities contribute to the look of design features I guess that's okay. Form following function is good. At least they have this kind of "pull together" shape for the front , which is kind of interesting.

Here's an outline on 2010 camo. Seems like the "angry reptile" look wins.
Im not very good in Photoshop, but here I draw how approximately front lights will look.
Hummmm..., That's not what _I_ see behind this camouflage. I think your outline is off.
I need the original photo again (I didn't save the original before I outlined in red)..., this time I'll look again more closely. I'm pretty sure mine (the one you crossed out) is more accurate to what is actually under there.
Here is photoshop which got most accurate lights shape (about 99% real) and kidneys. But the appearence is not very good.... Proportions are weird and car looks sad-looking on this photoshop. The real car looks much more dynamic and angry-looking.
This photoshop got most accurate proportions, but components like lights shape are more accurate on photoshop above.:

Thanks Buddy, looks like I'm wrong (again! ).
BTW, as far as looks? It is always better in person so there's hope. I remember hating the Bangle cars when I first saw them in the media and then went to dealership and saw them thinking, "they're bad but not THAT bad."
...the new 5series will have very similar headlights, as currently already released new 7series...
...look closer at the new 7series front pictures...

When I have seen first photos not long before press release, I was dissapointed... After press release I still wasn't sure I like this car. I changed my mind when I have seen it in flesh, especially interior. Also it drives great... But new Z4 looked great on press release photos, and not that great in person...
OZR: New 5er will not be a 7er copy. It will have some similarities, but most similar thing will be interior. Outside new 5er will look less serious, but more aggressive and proportions will be better. IMO new 5 series will be the best looking Bimmer in this generation.
Whoopsy:
One sure hope the new 5 be the best looking one, as the currently one is the ugliest.
I liked current 5 series much more than previous 7 series (E65) and 3 series (E90). Also 5 series was most successful Bimmer in this generation, thats reason why it recived minor face lift, while 3 series and 7 series recived quite a big change.
E92 3 Coupe also looks very good, thats reason why it will recive similar face lift like 5 series.
IMO the worst thing in current 5 series is interior. Mine had all equipment , big screen (navi prof), but still was boring inside. So its good to know that new 5 series will have very similar interior to current 7 series.

We are polar opposite, I bought a E65 745i because I like the serious look of the headlamps and the general styling of the car, I even got used to the bangle butt, and the interior is second to none, the lovely iDrive (yes I love the first gen iDrive, I can control almost anything without take my eyes off the road to hunt for buttons, it became less-usable when BMW dumb it down in subsequent versions to cater to the stupid) general high-tech look of the interior.
I also got myself a E90 because I think the headlamp treatment is the best in the BMW lineup, (0% lease offer from the dealer + $5000 off also help)
I skipped buying the M5 because of the horrible headlamps, skipped the M6 because of the horrid rear-end (the worst of the bangle butt).
