Re: 12 Hours of Sebring - Saturday

Yes, the Panoz had for all intent and purposes, been passed. He should have let Lieb complete the maneuver and then try and take the place back (if able to).

Re: 12 Hours of Sebring - Saturday

To be honest, I do think the commentators were right in this case. I understand Lieb´s intention to cut the line for the Panoz but he didn´t leave him sufficient room to go.

The Panoz was being definitely overtaken and should have left the space to Lieb's car. Panoz should have backed off because he couldn't defend his position. It's like committing a professional foul in football to deny an obvious goal scoring opportunity.

Re: 12 Hours of Sebring - Saturday

Wow, I must differ with everyone's opinion.

Had this been the ENTRANCE to the turn, I might have felt like yes, the Porsche had the right of way. But this was the exit. The Panoz held it's line and was on the outside.

The Porsche was the car trying to squeeze him into the wall or force him to check up on the brakes .... The Porsche could have easily held a tighter line and stopped drifting out.

The Porsche was attempting to pass, but did not complete and thus put his car in a position where he was trying to "shut the door" but did not have enough room in front of the Panoz to complete the manuever and thus created the contact with the Panoz.

    Sorry, it's the Porsche's fault.

..sorry , but I don't see it that way.

I'm not sure the fact that it was at the exit or entrance of the turn has any bearing on this.

An overtaking maneuver has been executed (and half a car's length is enough to consider that the maneuver has been executed) and the car that was overtaken, should at this point in time, cede to the maneuver. (Imagine if every car that was overtaken refused to yield).
If this had been in F1, the Midget and Spanky would have been all over the Panoz like a hot rash!
Sorry, but the Panoz was at fault.

But only if the F1 Panoz didn't happen to be a Ferrari. Smiley

PS: I like your reference to "the Midget and Spanky". Couldn't we just always call them that in future? Smiley

I agree. The Panoz was overtaken, but the Porsche took the risk of trying to squeeze him into the wall and "shut the door." When there was no need to perform a "Shut the Door" maneuver. That's the risk you take when you try that move.

The Panoz was on the OUTSIDE and held it's line - it was the Porsche that tried to bully him off his line by progressively widening the arc of his turn. The Panoz was under no obligation to give him that section of the road.

Re: 12 Hours of Sebring - Saturday

I hate to say this as a GT3 driver myself, but I think the fault lies with Lieb.  I have driven Sebring many times and unfortunately the line Lieb took at that speed would force him to track out into the Panoz.  Also the lateral loads on the cars in that turn almost prevent any lifting of the throttle without spinning.  The Panoz really did not have any choice but to hold his line.   I just find it surprising that Lieb pushed so hard to pass at that point with about 2 hours left in the race and a faster car?!?
