Bargain 997 prices in the UK

Hi guys, I was doing some figures - just out of curiosity - of some 997 models. The findings were incredible so I wanted to share them with you.

The foreign exchange rate that I have used is from the close of business on Friday 6 March: £1 = €1.11. Also, sales tax in Germany is 19% whereas it has been reduced from 17.5% to 15% in the UK.

Here are the (1) prices for German buyers in Germany in Euros inc 19% German sales tax (2) prices for UK buyers in Germany in Pounds Sterling inc 15% UK VAT (3) prices for UK buyers in the UK in Pounds Sterling inc 15% UK VAT (4) prices for German buyers in the UK in Euros inc 19% German sales tax (5) savings for UK buyers in the UK compared to buying in Germany (6) savings for German buyers in the UK compared to buying in Germany.

    997 C2S Mk2: (1) €93980 (2) £81821 (3) £68878 (4) €79114 (5) £12943 (6) €14866

    997 C2S Cab Mk2 (1) €104928 (2) £91352 (3) £76013 (4) €87309 (5) £15339 (6) €17619

    997 T4S Mk2 (1) €108855 (2) £94771 (3) £78578 (4) €90255 (5) £16193 (6) €18600

    997 TT Mk1 (1) €143008 (2) £124505 (3) £99679 (4) €114492 (5) £24826 (6) €28516

    997 TT Cab Mk1 (1) €153956 (2) £134036 (3) £105904 (4) €121642 (5) £28132 (6) €32314

    997 GT3 Mk2 (1) €116947 (2) £101816 (3) £81914 (4) €94087 (5) £19902 (6) €22860

The savings in columns (5) and (6) are simply staggering.

UK buyers are getting Porsches very cheaply in the UK right now. But because we earn in Pounds Sterling, we don't see this fact. But people in the Eurozone earning Euros can save literally many many thousands of Euros right now buying Porsches in the UK even after paying the slightly higher sales tax in their home country once they take their new car back home.

If I were in the market for a new 997, I would be buying in the UK. And you guys in the Eurozone could seriously consider buying in the UK. If you have a car to sell, you could sell it privately. Even if you lose something this way, your savings on the new car will compensate you by much more IMHO.

By the way, here is a link to a previous thread I posted over 2 years ago detailing how I bought my 997 C2S Coupe Mk1 in Germany making a big saving. How times have changed!

Re: Bargain 997 prices in the UK

I was in the Porsche dealer today trying to work out a deal (didn't because my 986S is virtually worthless) and there were a couple of Belgians buying a LHD Cayenne diesel.

Re: Bargain 997 prices in the UK

Obviously, for people who have a Porsche to sell (in order to help pay for a new Porsche), used car prices in the UK are dreadful.

Roughly speaking, using www.parkers.co.uk, a 2-3 year old 997 Carrera, Carrera S or Turbo has lost about 47% of its value in depreciation. By comparison, a 2-3 year old 997 GT3 or GT3 RS has lost about 37% of its value.

I did a quick calculation that my 997 C2S is now worth around £35k - £40k (at most). A new fully loaded 997 GT3 Mk2 costs £98k. That's an extra £58k - £63k. Although the 997 GT3 Mk2 is very desirable, is it worth paying that much extra for it? I don't think so...

Thanks Easy for doing the math for us Smiley
When I was searching for a used 997 GT3 MKI a couple of month ago I was very tempted by the price level in the UK - ultimately I went for a german car because I did not want a RHD car.

Now for the 100 points question: what about ordering a 997 GT3 MK II LHD at a UK OPC ? Smiley

Re: Bargain 997 prices in the UK

Believe it or not, but I was crazy enough to sell my Lotus (MY2007) last December and order a new LHD 2009 model in the UK. Benefited from a very low exchange rate (end of December). Taking delivery in mid march Smiley Same config as the first one, but with LOTS of Lotus Motorsport options for track use !! Smiley

I will report about it once I have it in my garage.

Re: Bargain 997 prices in the UK

RHD is a bit inconvenient in Europe, but it has one big advantage: Speed cameras will take pictures of the passenger seat.

One British looney puts a large puppet in the passenger seat of his RHD car then deliberately triggers speed cameras and waits for the puppet photo to arrive in the post. The German authorities are not amused but cannot prosecute him without a driver photo. Here is the story.

Puppet in the front seat of a British car makes muppets of the German police

German police are appealing for help in finding a British driver making muppets out of them.

Speed cameras in the state of Bavaria have captured an Audi car breaking the speed limit several times with a Muppet Show character appearing to be at the wheel.

Only after examining speed camera photos more closely did they realise it was a right-hand drive car with UK plates.

    muppet

A police traffic camera captures the driver dressed as Animal from The Muppet Show

Only a blur  was captured in the driving seat, because the speed cameras are focused for left-hand drive cars.

And when the pound falls to equal value with the Euro in ther near future, UK prices will become even more appealing.

Re: Bargain 997 prices in the UK

I don't think that will happen anytime soon. When you consider that the Bank of England has made available GB£150bn for 'quantitative easing' i.e. buying government bonds from the private sector in order to inject GB£150bn into the money supply (which laypeople wrongly refer to as printing money) but this had the effect of reducing the value of the Pound by only 1 Euro cent, then the reality seems to me to be that the currency markets have already priced the terrible economic situation into the market price of the Pound. I would like to think that the Pound will only rise in value from here. But, it's a very volatile market so let's see what happens... predictions are worthless at the moment.

Re: Bargain 997 prices in the UK

Doesn't Germany have a car tax credit (3000 EURO) for any car purchased this year? It is my understanding that as a result of the credit, the German showrooms have been busy and sales are up 20%.

If I am right (about the credit) that may explain why prices are holding up better in Europe.

Re: Bargain 997 prices in the UK

Nick, the so called "wrecking premium" is 2,500 € and you earn it only if you scrap a car which is at least 9 years old. Hence it doesn't apply to the typical P-car customer Smiley

Re: Bargain 997 prices in the UK

2,500 € may pay for a few small options only on today's cars Smiley

It's terrible that basic prices are kept low but the manufacturer stills makes a nice premium thanks to the options list.

Re: Bargain 997 prices in the UK

The prices in the UK-market are unbelievable...

I'm looking to replace my E30 BMW and I made the mistake to look at Pistonheads classifieds, E30 M3's are selling for £9.000, that's 50% discount on the European prices...

E36 M3's are selling for £4.000 which is rediculously little money for a performance car in good condition, in Europe we pay at least €10.000 for the same car... I'm now seriously considering buying a RHD car, I just cannot ignore that kind of a discount. The only thing stopping me is the thought of selling the car here...

If you are buying from new then what's to stop you spec'ing LHD and factory pickup through the UK dealership?

I think ordering a LHD 997 GT3 Mk2 at a UK OPC with factory collection in Zuffenhausen should be fine. I'm not sure whether they would reduce the price by the (approx) 4000-5000 Euro price of RHD conversion even though the car obviously is made LHD normally.

Obviously to get LHD, one has to order a brand new car so buying a used car almost always means getting a RHD vehicle.
