    997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

I have a 2006 Powerkit Carrera S with Aerokit and many options that made the MSRP climb to over $122,000!  I have been,  for the past 1 1/2 years debating in my head wether or not to sell my car and get a 996 Turbo now that I may be able to do so without money out of pocket.  I have 22,800 miles on my car and had delivery of it in March, 2006.  I have several reasons for wanting to go that route:  first,  I don't track my 997 as I have an 87 Carrera for that;  second,  I worry about the value of my car 2 or more years down the road - will it get to be a $30,000 car?;  third is the inferior engine design that,  according to some experts was not designed for longevity or with long term ownership in mind,  but for cheap manufacture to ensure high profit margins.  I love the way my Carrera S drives,  feels,  sounds and looks very much.  Nevertheless,  I am an enthusiast and an engineer and having what may be an underengineered car and paying top dollar for it,  as if it was a thoroughbred,  leaves me with a bad taste in the mouth.  What would you guys do?  Would you consider changing a car like mine for a 2003 or newer 996 Turbo because of its superior engine and transmission even if the interior and the looks are not as nice as the 997s?  I am attracted to one with an X50 package.

Any help with the decision is very helpful and appreciated.  I intend to keep the car for a very long time and have concerns on engine problems with the M97 engines.  So far mine has been trouble free but one never knows with the M96 and M97 engines.  Don't advise me to buy a 997 Turbo as it is out of my reach right now and a GT3 won't do it for me as I have a need for those rear seats.  Thanks!Smiley

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

Not a 996/997 expert but it would seem to make sense. If the turbo is low miles and good condition you get more tech with the all wheel drive, slightly more power and an engine with a better rep. You give up a little on looks up front.

I would say do it especially since 997.2 will make yours even less attractive down the road. hth

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

Yes, indeed.  I also thought a lot about the fact that,  even when my car has similar power and torque as the 997.2 Carrera S,  the new engine is supposed to be much better than the M97 specially since it has no intermediate shaft and is more fuel efficient.  Its pricing is also very similar to a 2008 997.1 so that would push the value of my car downwards more once they start finding their way into second or subsequent owners as used cars.  I think that really ended up convincing me.  As of now,  my car is on the market.  Spread the word!

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

I believe unless you go for 2003 GT2, I think at this time, there are many of them on the market... it is not worth while to sale your 2006 C2S and take a loss for an used car.  If you do intent to keep your car for a long time, a first hand new car is much better than an used car... Smiley

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

go with the 997....the 996 looks dated and you will always be looking at 997's and ask yourself why you got a 996.....

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

My brother told me that,  if I am going to change cars,  why not sell it now so that I lock in a higher value instead of depreciating further and wait until March and pick a 2007 997 Turbo at a lower price than now,  maybe with an affordable out of pocket expense or a small loan.  That may be another route.

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

agree on 996tt having a durable gt1 engine, but that doesn't mean the 997 engine is going to breakdown any sooner.

other than more horsepower and awd (if you need it), I don't think a 996tt is better than a 997s in any other way.

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

I think you've got a terrific RWD 911 that is plenty powerful, plenty fast, and plenty unique (with powerkit and aerokit).  The 996 TT won't be much faster, and will lose that true sportscar feel with AWD and extra weight, though it will be noticeably faster in a straight line.

If you want a different 911 that might hold its resale value better over time, I would suggest a 993 TT, or a 997 GT3.

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

I am in the same boat as I over optioned my car including X51. Retail price was about $116,000.  About 10 months after I bought my car I went to the Porsche Driving Experience in Alabama and got addicted to the track.  I then started really wanting a 997GT3 and had I waited the year I could have bought one for about the same money.  The GT3 also held up better on depreciation.

I couldn't stomach the 50% hit on my current car so will keep it until warranty is up at the end of January 2010.  These are great cars and if anything are over engineered.  If I were you I wouldn't sell and get a 996 Turbo but if you now think the Turbo & AWD fits your needs better wait and sell closer to your warranty expiring and get a 997 Turbo.  IMO you have already taken the worse of your depreciation hit.

    Good luck.

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

Keep that X51 car.  You wind up with a very  dated car in the 996TT and having a turbo isn't the end all to everything.  I drove a turbo for 11 years and am very  happy to be back to a NA engine.  The more you change cars the more you lose.  Trust me, a bunch of people would be lining up out there for your X51 car.  (They know YOU'RE taking the hit).

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

I made the switch from a 997 C2S to a 996 X50 three years ago becuase although the C2S is an almost perfect road car, it felt too weak for the track abuse.

I added coilovers, more power, Corsas, a short shifter and upgraded brake pads and fluid to the X5O which made it very hard for GT3s to catch at the Ring. And still had the back seats for small kids.

But if you don't track your 997 C2S I would recommend keeping it, as the 996 Turbo is really getting old and for road use is not as pure a sports car as the one you already have.

    Stay where you are!

I'm not sure the 996 is much faster, with drivetrain loss and extra weight, but even so... the 996 interior is ugly.

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

    I also own a 2006 997 S X51 and wouldn't trade it for a 996 turbo, no way !

Much better looks but, more importantly : very good performance, the slight power deficit (381 vs 420 HP) is more than compensated by the better chassis of the 997 PASM. I think a X51 is faster on track than a 996 turbo.

I also like to own a GT3, but the X51 really is the civilised all round version of it...

    Re: 997 X51 Carrera S or 996 X50 Turbo?

I too have a 2006 S Cab with X51.. I have a deposit on a 2010TT Cab, but I would never trade backwards for a 996 platform.. I love the 997 and really am only trading for the sake of newer and more power. The 996 offers you very little in the way of power gain on a dated body style and tech package

If it came down to my keeping my present car or trading for a 996 X50 , I would keep the newer S with Powerkit.
