    4 - Zylinder confirmed!

    Guys,

I met this christmas my friend which works in the engine development . He confirmed that Porsche will bring the 4-Zylinder into the Boxster.

Three reasons for that he mentioned, one is reducing wheight with almost same HP from todays Boxster, second PAG needs to reduce the overall fleet consumption and third is a reduced price tag to be competitive against TT (which is still the be-hated brother he said), SLK and Z4!

Why? Having choices is very good IMO.

Besides, on top of the bad economic climate there are very strict CO2 rules coming from EU (voted this month) and fuel consumption rules in the USA.

Porsche must reduce its 2007 average CO2 by 25% in 2012 or incur penalties of up to 95EUR per gram per car!!

Does anyone know of different ways of achieving these strict targets?

    Re: 4 - Zylinder confirmed!

i would agree if PAG tries to approach ever increasing customer base if they would still focus on the hardcore Porsche fan. simply going more affordable is seriously diluting the core brand and product.

    Re: 4 - Zylinder confirmed!

Another GOOD move from Porsche Smiley

    Re: 4 - Zylinder confirmed!

Not really enough information at this time to judge one way or the other. We know that the Valmet contract will end in 011/012.  It's unlikely that Porsche is going to drop a 4 cylinder into the current 987, so this engine, whatever its configuration, will be destined for the next platform. Whether this new Porsche will be part of a larger VW/Audi effort also remains to be seen. A flat 4 in a light weight roadster (i.e. composites and aluminum) could be very interesting.  A peaky, low torque "screamer" (E30 M3/S2000) in a 3000 lb roadster probably will not make may new friends for Porsche.

yeahh!! if the engine is Boxer i think that is a perfect idea, and of course it will be cheaper!!

    Yeahh!! a great ideaaa!!

    Re: 4 - Zylinder confirmed!

My friend didnt tell me exactly what kind of engine it is, but what I asked him and meant to hear out of his "excuses" was that it is a VW 4-Zylinder with 2.0 TT. My guess is that we are talking about same engine we know in many VW/Audi cars - FSI, TT!

    4 cylinder TurboFSI!

So, a small Porsche Turbo like the 924 Turbo (2 lt 4 cylinder in line) of the 70s which was a great car at the time.

    Lars,thanks for the info!!

I think is the only way for Porsche to can fight with new CO2 rules

Hope that this Boxster and Cayenne TDI,can bring us again better 911!

    997 TT, what a car/che'mmmmmaghena!!!

Well at least it will give credibility to those that say that the Boxster is not a proper Porsche, because it will simply be a badge engineered Audi / VW, Smiley in much the same way as the Cayenne is a badge engineered VW Toerag. Smiley

The 987 will simply be the last proper mid-engined affordable Porsche.  Smiley

From what I understand there will be a choice between entry level 4 cylinder and higher spec flat 6. This sounds very reasonable to me. The engine is the heart of the car but other things matter, mostly the chassis and the feel of the car.

The Cayenne/Touareg relationship is the other way round. Porsche fully developed the model themselves and VW covered a large part of the cost. So the Touareg is a badge engineered Porsche really.

    From the pictures here

    http://www.rennteam.com/forum/thread/20066329/2011_Boxster_allready_testing/index.html

the rear deck appears higher than the current car,so perhaps they made some space.

who cares, no one is saying they won't make the 2.7 and the 3.4 anymore. I think it's a very good move on Porsches part to reduce the CO2 emissions. I hope it also makes it way into the Cayman because im saving for that to happen Smiley

Lars, did he indicate whether this was for the base models only, or base AND S models?  I'd really like to know the answer.

No indication. I will try to ask him, will see him Sunday again (its his b-day!).

This engine may be o.k. from a technical point of view, but IMO it's not very inspiring in terms of driving fun (even in the KTM X-Bow I didn't like this engine very much) Smiley

no one said they will stop the 2.9L and the 3.4L to have them replaced by only the VW 4clinder engine so how does this news trigger a "if i wanted a VW / Audi / SEAT / Skoda sports car i wouldn't buy a Porsche!"

Will adding a smaller engine choice to the 988 make the 987 the last proper sports car Smiley

In fact in order for you to buy the next Boxster without adding 95EUR/gram, Porsche has to reduce 07 emission outputs by 25%.

    Re: 4 - Zylinder confirmed!

If the 988 (or whatever it's called) are only 4 cylinder variants (turbo or supercharged) due to the carbon emissions rules, it seems very clear to me the last of the 987Ss will be the car to have.  It's akin to the early '70s all over again, would you rather have a '72 or a '74 911?

    Re: 4 - Zylinder confirmed!

    Vier Zylinder = Four Banger.Smiley
Hopefully just an "option" with EU CO2 rules in mind, and with the boxer-six still available.

There will be 6-zylinder Variants, too. The four is just an option!

The next design will be compromised to take the higher vertical height of the VW / Audi / Seat / Skoda 4 cyl in line engine, whereas at the moment it is a no-compromise design to suit the low centre of gravity flat six engine. The shape will therefore be even more bulbous over the rear deck than it is currently, unless the car is made longer so that the soft top doesn't fold over the top of the engine bay as it does now. A higher centre of gravity is the very last thing you want in a sports car. Smiley

No, the last proper, no-compromise Boxster is the 987. I'm glad that I won't be in the market for one when 988 comes around. Smiley

    Re: 4 - Zylinder confirmed!

Porsches are going to be everywhere.

A porsche shoud not be an affordable car. If it is, it will become as common as a golf GTI, and you won't want to spend 65k on a boxster S if everybody drives one and has paid 35k for it.

It's a bad move. Porsche will be no different than BMW in a couple of years. A car generalist with prices going from 35k to 200k.

Kinda of sad. A porsche is meant to make you dream, not pass by and think "god, another one of those"...

It's already happened - I'm sure it is Porsche's ambition to become the next BMW, we have Cayenne, Panamera, 997. As Seat is the sportyVW brand I guess it will be the Seat Cayman and Boxster. Then I guess we will sooner or later have a Porsche niche micro-car along the same lines as the BMW Mini and the Fiat Cinquecento. No wonder residuals have gone down the tube, they were headed that way log before the recession started to bite.

We had to see to much compromises from PAG in the last years - four door saloon, diesel and now decent engine from VW Golf...Smiley

I know everything about emission regulations, financial crise, but wasn't the goal to take control over VW? Now was the best opportunity to leave all these bulshit projects to VW/Audi devision and to produce this, which can do best - proper sports cars!
