This is a car further into the blueprint of the Italian supercar.
Very low and wide, mid-engine, many cylinders and unusual striking appearance.
Do you think that this latest Audi makes the Gallardo and the F430 redundant as driving tools?
Do you think that the four circles can have the charisma of the cavallino or the bull on the bonnet?
If the answers to both the above questions are NO, then what is the point of Audi producing an excellent car only to be considered second best to the italian originals? It is like entering a contest they cannot win.
I am still sceptical about the R8 especially the V10 concept. Wouldn't it be better if Audi produced a unique supercar based on pure Audi heritage and germanic automobile values? In 1979 they invented a new type of supercar for the time with the original Quattro, for example.
Even the engine under glass is not Audi at all but an italian imitation that doesn't suit a german no nonsense brand. It is like you go out dressed like David Beckham instead of being yourself, only to find out that the people you want to impress are indifferent.

I'm going to buy one used, let someone else take the first plummet. Depreciation should slow down from there on.
C'mon Mike - you know we all depend on you taking the first hit..... how else will we get a first-hand R/T user's report?
Unless Ron is willing to take on that role...
Thanks for the data, KresoF1. Unfortunately the price tag is a bit too high for my taste, even if this car is a beauty. I heard from some of our sources that sportscars (incl. Ferrari) are selling very very slow over here in Germany right now and dealers don't seem to expect a better situation for 2009, on the contrary. I wonder if these "super sportscars" are going to sell with a huge rebate or if they just will sit on inside the dealerships as some sort of expensive show car. People over here aren't really in the mood of buying a 150000 EUR toy right now and I can understand them pretty well. A lot of people will loose their jobs next year, many others will suffer from a financial crisis of some sort or another, it won't be easy to justify driving around in such a car, especially since the R8 is pretty flashy too.
I'm afraid this is more the time of an Audi RS6 than R8 if you get my point.
Christian,
I understand your last point very well and I agree with you. Buy RS6 Avant for example and delete all RS6 badges and you will be almost incognito... Impossible with R8 or R8 V10. Just... Few days ago one kid asked me in a parking garage in center of Zagreb why I bought R8? I asked him(he drives new 135i) what kind of question is that? He said that despite R8 is in his opinion awsome car-it is ONLY Audi... Not exactly my opinion.
You are also right about sale drop in Germany. Even R8 is not selling as planned, some mid east markets and Russia(far east also) will save the situation but, basically your point is as true as possible.
I am glad that you like R8. It is in both version(V8 and new V10) awsome sportscar, at least IMHO.
KresoF1:I always thought that this is a major advantage of the R8 (same applies to Porsche). Understatement combined with state-of-the-art technology is always good. Cars that are very flashy and/or produced by very exclusive brands cannot be used as convinently as an Audi or Porsche
He said that despite R8 is in his opinion awsome car-it is ONLY Audi... Not exactly my opinion.

LOL John!
Kreso, are the going to stick with calling them the "R8 V8' and R8 V10" at Audi? So there will be no special badging or proper model name?
Example: Cayenne (V6), Cayenne S (V8), Cayenne Turbo (TT) etc. etc.

How about an R8 with a vacuum cleaner logo (tip) like the one on 997 Turbo
I wonder how much more power you could extract out of that V10 with minor bolt-ons
I wonder if the R8 V10 will beat GT-R's time around the NBR.
It should IMO if this car is to gain any credibility.
Because Audi have pumped up the horsepower considerably, it is a modern design mid-engined AWD car which theoretically has all the advantages of weight distribution, grip and handling.
Allegedly, Nissan's big weapon is its advanced AWD system. Let's see if Audi who invented the AWD supercar with the original Quattro have come up with something better in order to uphold their reputation.
The Audi's cousin the Gallardo has disappointed at the Nordschleife but at least it has the supercar name and charisma. Let's see if the Audi's lack of charisma is offset by better speed.

Mike,
Yes, Audi is sticking with calling them JUST R8! On both versions you get R8 badge(or you can choose option without any badge) on the back. V10 version get V10 badge in front of doors on both sides... If you ask me this is actually good. Official names are R8 4.2 FSI and R8 V10 5.2FSI...
