    Cayman Driving Experience

I had the opportunity to drive a Cayman this weekend in an autocross setting. I was one of the instructors for a Cayman Driving Experience day sponsored by a local dealer. We ran a 35-40 second standard autocross course and because of weather we were able to run both in the rain and in the wet. I probably drove 35 laps over the course of the and I have to say the the Cayman was outstanding. The handling was very neutral and crisp. The car had very good turn-in and excellent traction coming out of the corners....in the wet it was also very good, PSM saved a number of the participants. I had the opportunity to also drive a Tip-equiped car and I was pleasantly surprised with the performance and shift response while on the course. The cars had 18" wheels and no PASM.

Correction: ...in the rain and in the "dry"

Did you try any laps without the PSM? Some articles have mentioned that the car is a bit skittish on the limit w/o PSM...

I did try it without PSM and it still was very controllable on the limit, easily controlled with the throttle...the car is very forgiving and a real blast when the revs get past 5000....

    That's great to hear

    Re: Cayman Driving Experience

Did you notice the notorious lack of LSD? I would think on an autocross course, you would notice something like that. I took a Cayman w/ PASM on a spirited test drive a while back and felt the car bogged down a little, coming out of a very tight turn.

I really didn't notice an issue with not having LSD...the car corners reasonably flat and this reduces the unloading of the inside rear wheel. Of course it's also a question of when you get on the throttle.....

    Re: Cayman Driving Experience

Well, that's good to hear. There's been a lot of discussion about the lack of LSD on the Cayman, some saying that it's the single aspect of the car that's keeping them from buying. But, from what you are saying it may not be that detrimental, though Walter Rohl seems to say that it is. I understand that an aftermarket LSD may not be possible due to the PSM.

Walter R. is probably right when you're running 10/10's on a race track....but us mear mortal's can live quite well with out it in most situations.

    Re: Cayman Driving Experience

Being an instructor I'm sure you're a skilled driver, so hearing from you that the lack of LSD is not a huge hindrance to the car is good news.
