    987S Residuals (UK)

Took my 15 months old 987S back to the supplying OPC today - with a view to trading up to a used 911 996 Turbo Coupe, priced at Pounds74,995. The offer for my car, which cost me Pounds51,300 was....................

................Pounds35,000! Taking into account my monthly finance payments, but excluding running costs, the 987S has cost me nearly Pounds22,000! Don't let anyone tell you that the Boxster has strong residuals - or that options are worthwhile; it hasn't - and they aren't! I expected a loss, somewhere around Pounds8000 plus my finance costs - a total of around Pounds13,000 - but no, Pounds22,000 loss.

So what am I going to do? Probably sell the Boxster and get out of what I thought was a premium brand - and return to the sanity of mainstream motoring!

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

I very nearly had to sell my 987s back in September. Mine cost Pounds47.5k, new 03/05, had done 6,000 miles and my OPC offered me Pounds41k - with no px. Is yours high mileage? Unpopular colour such as nipple pink with polkadot leather? ? Otherwise I suggest your OPC is taking the pi55. Go elsewhere.

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

Under 7500 miles: GT Silver metallic; full Stone Grey leather plus the rest of the options list including PASM, Bose, PCM etc

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

All cars seem to have worse residuals now than they used to. I am expecting to part company with mine in September after my South of France holiday - I can't financially justify keeping it much after that. I reckon on Pounds36 - Pounds38k by then.

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

I'd try a couple of OPCs. OK, it's not the best time of year to be selling, and some of your options - special paint etc. will have no value even after such a short time, but you should be able to get better than that - px or not.

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

You specced the car with what you wanted, not for resale. Add to that Porsche is now volume, not select manufacturer.

Buy any 987S above Pounds46k list and you can wipe the extra money away on delivery, plus the vat so thats Pounds10k+ gone in the first mile.

All the OPCs are changing their demo stock currently too, so its not the best time of year to be asking (when is it ever ?) I reckon they'd forcourt the car at Pounds43500. They'd probably have to spend Pounds3k on the car to get it back to standard to (warranty, rear tyres, respray bumper and bonnet, service etc etc etc)

Exactly , all brands are the same ..

EG : Peed off with the Chrysler Voyager I just bought due to the poor mpg on it its only 6 weeks old and cost Pounds25,500 , so phoned around to get a part ex deal on a Mitsubishi mpv . THE RESULT -- well there offer was Pounds16,500 , thats a Pounds9000 loss in 6 weeks I had to laugh its a absolute joke..

Theres only one way to get your true money's worth out of a car and thats to keep it for a while , shame but very true..

    Good Luck..

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

The market has definitely softened - my previous 986S lost Pounds9000 in 2 years and my current one has lost about Pounds16000 in the same period. Even though the introduction of the 987 hasn't helped I think the state of the market is mostly to blame. Anyway, I am going to keep mine longer and maybe get a 1 year old Porsche next instead of new (which one though?)

Right, general formula for me always has been: if intending to resell the car after a short period of ownership, go pre-owned, new car financially makes sense only if you keep her long-term.

BTW the average age of all registered cars in Germany is eight (!) years....

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

C'mon guys did we not all buy these cars for spirited sporting drives?...lets enjoy these roadsters and not worry about resale. I understand circumstances may prevent some guys from keeping them but those who don't have to sell should enjoy testing the fantastic handling etc.

I bought mine for pleasurable driving. I did not choose the spec for the next purchaser of my car, besides I intend to keep it for many years...so depreciation should not be a problem

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

I sell my cars every 18 months to two years and the most I have lost is GBP 10,000 approx on my 2003 996. I bought it knowing full well that I would get the 997 and sold it 4 months after the 997 came out. I always tend to buy cars that are little bit special - interior or colour but don't bother with too many silly options. However, the GBP 22,000 loss on your 987S sounds WAY TOO high. I would sell privately or do a consignment sale or keep it for another year or so! Its a great car!

Meanwhile, that 996 Turbo you are looking at GBP 74,000 ish is going to be worth a maximum of GBP 60,000 depending on mileage / condition by the end of this year! I would wait! You won't lose anymore on the 987S but you will DEFINITELY save on the 996 Turbo.

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

The turbo you're looking at is very expensive and has got to come down in you wait for a bit esp when the official press release of the 997 turbo is impending (mid-Feb). You could get a very reasonable 996 turbo for about 55k (try Mark Pearce)!!
    I'd get a 997 C2S otherwise - at least it'll hold its residual a wee bit better.... (!!?)

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

Del, I'm having similar realisations over here too. I'm pretty sure my next car will be another Porsche, but it won't be a new one. Definitely sell privately if you have to sell at all.

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

    true

    Re: 987S Residuals (UK)

your car should not loose more than 20% of its price.
