Winter storage and door locks

The car has been in the garage since mid-december. This afternoon I went to move it a few feet to prevent flat spots on the tires. I tried opening the doors with the keyfob and both doors opened right away. I was expecting to have to use the key since it has been parked for 5 weeks, but there was no need.

The manual says that the remote control(keyfob) is turned off after 7 days if the car is not started or unlocked. Has anyone else seen this behaviour? BTW, the car is on a trickle charge so the battery is fully charged. Maybe the locking is based upon the charge level and not time?

That sounds strange. On my 996, after 5 days, the key fob won't open the doors.

Do you have Sport Chrono? I don't know for sure, but I thhink that sport chrono comes with a bunch of programmable options for the car that may include the feature that disables the key fob after 5-7 days. Just guessing. I'd call the dealer.

sounds like your car is defective. give it to me and i'll look into it. may take a year or so to get around to it though, but i'll road test it thoroughly for ya meanwhile :-)

actually, i agree, call porsche. but i'm not a fan of calling dealers...they're usually pretty lacking from my experience. does 1-800-porsche answer questions?

How long will you keep your car in storage? What do you drive during the winter in place of your 997?

The car will be in storage until about the third week of March. In the winter I use an Infiniti G35X. The AWD of the infiniti works very well in the snow and ice that is common around here.

I do have the sport chrono, but I have not seen any option that will change the door locks. Maybe a call to Porsche will add some light to the question.

Good thing you have the charger because the locking system is one of the main reasons it shuts itself off to conserve the battery. Therefore the system is malfunctioning.

FWIW, I would NOT lock the car during storage unless I absolutely had to. I'm not exactly sure but I believe a dead battery and locked car make for some interesting PITA. Do the keys work in the door lock completely mechanically or is there an electric interface?

If they continued with the system on the 996 the door key/lock mechanism is strictly mechanical. Opening the door allows one to access the emergency electrical connections in the drivers footwell. Hooking up the emergency connections as per the owners manual allows one to open the electrical latches for the front and rear compartments.
