TPM option - an absolute MUST!

For all you guys spec'ing out your new 997s, here's a BIG tip...get the Tire Pressure Monitor option!! I know it seems expensive but it could save your life!

I was out doing some Sunday driving today and suddenly the warning lights of my TPM started bleeping stating I had a flat tire. I immediately pulled over in a lay-by and got out the car to watch (and hear) all the air rushing out of my passenger-rear tire. It was completely flat within 2 minutes.

I was on some 60+ mph quiet windy roads going through a large wood. If I didn't have TPM on my 997 I would have continued driving completely unaware and probably spun off the road uncontrollably at the next bend (or earlier). That could have been potentially SO nasty, if not fatal!

Luckily everything worked out with very little drama. I was collected by a pick-up-truck an hour later, taken to the nearest OPC, and then driven home.

Very little drama...compared to what could have been!

Re: TPM option - an absolute MUST!

    yeah, that's true.

I'd say for our cars it should be required (us$2000+ for every ruined wheel/tire). There's almost no warning before your wheel/tire's ruined.

Gonna be "required" on all cars in the USA in a few years. I think that's too "Big Brother." A Ford going 52mph (in front of me of course) has no need for such hi-tech stuff. If you have a tire going flat the average driver should be smart enough to wake up and get it fixed. For rude-awakening blowouts? TPMS won't help much.

Re: TPM option - an absolute MUST!

All manufacturers have to integrate a TPMS in their cars for the 2007 model year. Porsche actually gets 'credit' with the DOT for every car delivered with TPMS prior to 2007,--not sure what this ultimately means.

There are two designs out there in the TPMS. The one Porsche uses is based upon a pressure differential between the inside volume of the wheel and a constant,--a smaller chamber in the area of the tire valve. Several other (but not many) use a system based upon wheel rotation, with calculations going on via the ABS system. When the rotation rate varies from the 'norm' it reports a pressure deviation.

Oh, I don't know. Think Ford Explorer and Firestone tires.

Maybe another attempt to deny Darwin's theories by promoting the survival of those less smart?

Re: TPM option - an absolute MUST!

My 530xi as the TPM based on rotation standard. It works I know due to the potholes in the NY area already claiming one tire in just after 1,000 miles. It worked very well but for the fact it could not tell me which tire was flat. Having said that it was obvious from the noise once I had stopped. Porsche should have a TPM system standard just for safetly reasons if you ask me, especially after you spend $90k...

What's nice about BMWs is there's no transmitter in each wheel with an "integral" battery (meaning: you must replace the entire transmitter when battery dies or at tire replacement).

But then again the Porsche version, will detect slow leaks and show you the psi values.

Re: TPM option - an absolute MUST!

The OPC just found half a Stanley knife blade in the tire!!

Any UK Solicitors on the forum that want to help me sue the builders that are building next to my new house and constantly leaving rubbish in the road just outside my drive?

Had the same happen to me on the Cayenne Turbo with 20" wheels - expensive

Re: TPM option - an absolute MUST!

19 inch Michelin = 320 pounds (incl vat)

    Outch.

I'm SO going to get the builders to pay for that at the very least...

Re: TPM option - an absolute MUST!

You can get them way cheaper than that!

Paid around Pounds225 for my 19" Michelin when I had a flat after only 600 miles!

    I wish I had, I wish I had, I wish I had TPM but I don't

were they the wide rear ones?

Re: TPM option - an absolute MUST!

    Alex,

You don't need to sue. Just get a solicitor to write a letter threatening to sue them for the cost of the replacement etc.

    Yeh, I know...was just venting

They have offered to pay half of the tire replacement (given I can't really prove it was their Stanley knife blade etc). Better than nothing I suppose but I am very weary about it happening again given the state of my road.

On a more pleasing note, in changing the tire, the OPC have carried out the Exhaust Recall today too (that I informed THEM of a few weeks back). So that confirms that the recall covers even the optional chrome exhausts.
