    Dump the radar detector?

I don't know if I'm the only one, but I'm getting a lot less tickets since I dumped my radar detector. I'm convinced that with the instant on radar on don't have much of a chance anyway and if the thing starts buzzing like crazy, it's too late. You step on the brakes and sure enough the troopers come after you everytime.
Since dropping my radar detector - and not changing my driving style - the trooers seem to be a lot more willing to let me go at 75-80, even 85. Does anybody feel the same way?

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

Whatever works for you. IMO a RD helps with situational awareness. It saved me yesterday from a CHP that was just sitting at the side of a downward sloping on ramp with his radar on. Without it there's a good chance I would have been nailed.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

Never had radar in NYC or CA; have always enjoyed my sportscars w/no tickets/accidents, but very "aware" of my fav roads ....much more alert for surroundings/hiding spots w/o radar...traffic flow on my fav fwys in SF is 80MPH+, so easy to "pick spots"....and at 120MPH+, radar is of little/no use...any competent CHP can eyeball those speeds casually from a fwy on-ramp/from other side of fwy/from air....

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

I used radar as a younger guy but haven't in the last 10 years or so. I think I also got more tickets with radar. Radar is a crutch IMO. Not having radar has caused me to be more aware of cops and their hiding spots (and also what's happening on the road around me). Plus, as mentioned above, if your really crusing above 90, the state police will pick you up by sight anyway so you need to watch out for them regardless.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

    Information is power.

Keep the detector, if you have a good unit you pick up reflections off of other cars and terrain. There are dozens of other alerts that are TIMELY and useful.

Hide the detector, the windshield isn't the only place to stick it.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

    mine's invaluable.

came back from vegas to LA in the P last night....it hit all four cops on the way

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

I drove 3000 miles in the States this year in a hire car at an average speed of 95-100mph and didn't get ticketed once during the day. It is so easy to spot your cops in daylight I don't know why anyone needs a radar over there.

Admittedly at night I got caught 3 times all at 100mph as it is impossible to see the buggers with their lights off sitting in ditches.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

I agree with MMD. I use a remote. Living in Upstate NY, bogies always attempt to find new spots to hide. In highway traffic, you're speeds vary anyway. On the back roads to Lake Placid and points North, they can't hide nearly as well and when they do, radar gives ample warning.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

V1 all the way... just gives me a peice of mind. I know where and where not to drive fast most of the time.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

I guess it's already evident in this thread that there's regional differences in police..., or should I say "speed trap" tactics.

In some places there may also be seasonal differences. Like they're trying to desensitize people during Fall, Winter and then all of a sudden intensifying efforts to nail people during campaigns in Spring and Summer. I haven't had any close calls for several months, end of last Summer it was happening every week; same roads.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

Am I going to get in trouble by asking the best radar detector question? V1 vs. 8500 X50 vs. RX65?

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

I have 8500 and V1. Both good BUT I like the much-touted arrows of the v1. Allows me to solve problem of where cop is sooner. Simple but very big advantage of the V1. Who needs to be puzzling over "Where's Smokey" longer than absolutely necessary (it's no fun anymore).

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

MMD do you have yours hard-wired? Do you have a picture of it mounted? I know I've posted a picture of the indicators built into the rear view mirror...but the price tag for installtion went up to $2000 at the place so I'm reconsidering.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

As a long time speeder and thus Amiercan crimminal I have used RD as a situational awareness aid. As others have stated, it's very easy to use them as a crutch and assume they will do all the detecting for you. The most useful aid to me was the LASIK surgery I had done a few years ago,--you need to be able to SPOT these guys early enough to be able to do something about it. The formal RD hardware is a very useful backup to the eyeball. I use the V1 but am searching for a more effective way to hide it,--in light of the fact that it will ultimately go in the S cabriolet that is on order. I like the looks of the hardwired approach within the rearview mirror but it's rather expensive and the receiver is low on the body placement,--restricting the maximum detection range potential considerably. The integrated approach, however, is better from a security perspective,--you don't have to dismount and lock the black box up each time you leave the car. Also, I'm not sure how visible the mirror installation would be in a cab.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

Agree with MMD once again. I have both, 8500 for the 4Runner and the V1 in the 997s. I prefer the V1. It's all about the arrows.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

Has anyone here tried the Beltronics RX65? Supposed to be one hell of a detector. I'm a bit V1-biased myself.

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

I'm with the guys who don't use them anymore. I've gone without for about 10 years as well, and my tickets (which used to be a problem for me) went away with the detector.

Losing my detector forced me to drive smarter, more aware, and quite honestly, I like it better. It's RELAXING knowing that you're not playing cops and robbers everytime you're heading somewhere, wondering exactly "when" you're time will be "up". It forced me to change my driving habits.

I find that I can run 8-10 mph over the limit, and never get a second glance from police. And 80 mph on the interstate, and 70-75 on state highways and many rural roads around here, is just fine for me. Back when I had the detector, I found that I was always using it as an excuse and an antagonist to speed more, and as such, I was always getting nailed. Sure, it gets you out of plenty of jams, but then your luck runs out. The way it is now, I don't need a detector to inform me of an upcoming cop, because ever since I threw it out, I drive at speeds that the cops don't care about anyhow. Do I drive around like grandma in my Porsche all the time?? Heck no!!! I can use my eyeballs and common sense to know when it's safe to stretch out, usually out in the middle of nowhere, and enjoy the car for the reasons I bought it. Sure, I'm playing with fire there, but history tells me I'm getting alot less tickets this way than I did before..

Even in town, I drive pretty quickly, but nothing that's gonna land me on the side of the road. I try to be considerate to my fellow travelers. Call it getting old, I just feel that the speed limits plus 8-10 are just fine, and everybody who's passing me doing 100+ is welcome to take the gamble with their detector. Eventually, I'll be passing them while they're sitting on the roadside looking like a snagged doofus..

    Re: Dump the radar detector?

FWIW I've found that I'm more aware with the detector on. I don't always use one(SUV daily driver) so when I do turn it on it becomes a trigger to be more alert because I need to

BTW, on the one ticket I received lately, the cop claimed they used radar. After it was obvious that I wasn't getting a warning I asked to see the reading. She stammered and said that she had reset it and the reading wasn't possible to see. The detector never went off. So it was BS. I would have not known that without one. We'll see how this one turns out

Always a good policy to ask to see the radar gun . . .
