Re: Dump the radar detector?
I'm with the guys who don't use them anymore. I've gone without for about 10 years as well, and my tickets (which used to be a problem for me) went away with the detector.
Losing my detector forced me to drive smarter, more aware, and quite honestly, I like it better. It's RELAXING knowing that you're not playing cops and robbers everytime you're heading somewhere, wondering exactly "when" you're time will be "up". It forced me to change my driving habits.
I find that I can run 8-10 mph over the limit, and never get a second glance from police. And 80 mph on the interstate, and 70-75 on state highways and many rural roads around here, is just fine for me. Back when I had the detector, I found that I was always using it as an excuse and an antagonist to speed more, and as such, I was always getting nailed. Sure, it gets you out of plenty of jams, but then your luck runs out. The way it is now, I don't need a detector to inform me of an upcoming cop, because ever since I threw it out, I drive at speeds that the cops don't care about anyhow. Do I drive around like grandma in my Porsche all the time?? Heck no!!! I can use my eyeballs and common sense to know when it's safe to stretch out, usually out in the middle of nowhere, and enjoy the car for the reasons I bought it. Sure, I'm playing with fire there, but history tells me I'm getting alot less tickets this way than I did before..
Even in town, I drive pretty quickly, but nothing that's gonna land me on the side of the road. I try to be considerate to my fellow travelers. Call it getting old, I just feel that the speed limits plus 8-10 are just fine, and everybody who's passing me doing 100+ is welcome to take the gamble with their detector. Eventually, I'll be passing them while they're sitting on the roadside looking like a snagged doofus..
