    Unlocking the phone!!!

To make the phone option available in my new porsche as an extra would have been Pounds500! as you probably allready know. After I had bought everything else, I couldnt stomach Pounds500 for a phone that I had to take the sim card in and out all the time...

I am sure there must be a way to unlock these phones so that they then work? If there is not a way allready im sure there will be a n aftermarket route coming out. Anyone got anymore knowledge on this or heard about products?

Seems crazy to have the phone in the dash and it doesnt work as standard.

    Re: Unlocking the phone!!!

If you didn't pay the money then you didn't get the phone module - so there is nothing to "unlock".
Having the keypad doesn't mean you have the phone. You have to buy the phone module and have it installed (it can be retrofitted but that costs more than OEM).
Some phone companies will supply duplicate SIM cards.

    Re: Unlocking the phone!!!

    P.S.
These are the German list prices for the retrofittable phone module (parts only):
    1,090.40 Euro (incl. 16% VAT)
    940.00 Euro (excl. VAT)

    Re: Unlocking the phone!!!

The Phone module slotes into the back of the PCM unit, you can not just buy the module and install by yourself as the PCM unit will require new coding to be written by your Porsche Center.

And most cell phone companies can sell you a second sim card that acts as a number 2.

You can also get a cell phone cradle fitted to your car, so you can slot your cell phone straight into it. When installed correctley (like at a Porsche Center) it will automaticalley mute the PCM when in a call. If you go for the cell phone cradel route dont go to any sound or alarm system installer, they will make a real mess.

    Re: Unlocking the phone!!!

Sure - I just think it is a real joke that the fascia to the phone is in there as standard but will only work for Pounds500. I speced the car up alot and opted to choose things that I thought more important than this phone module...

Im sure in time an aftermarket option will come out, so in the mean time I will use the blue tooth...

    Thanks alot for your help.

Like the others already said: there is no simple "unlocking" procedure.
You need to buy the hardware phone module, it has to be installed (not really difficult to do). After installing, it has to be activated as far as I know, using the PiWiS system. As far as I heard, the phone module comes with an individual activation code which has to be entered into PiWiS. More details at your dealer.

This is funny: you spend so much money for a car but you hesitate to spend 500 bucks for the phone. Now this really makes sense. BTW: we have a tri-card (Vodafone) and a twin-card option (T-Mobile) option over here in Germany. Vodafone UK has a similar option where you get a seperate SIM card for your car phone, you just have to activate it each time you want to use it, using a simple two digit code as far as I know. I have three SIM cards using the same phone number. Works like a charm. Or the better solution: give your car it's own phone number (like our cars for example) and program a call routing to each phone when you're not available on your portable cell phone. There are so many possibilities, you just have to use them.

"Im sure in time an aftermarket option will come out, so in the mean time I will use the blue tooth..."

I very much doubt if any third-party company will ever produce a phone module that integrates properly with the PCM and keypad. The market is just too small for something so specific and they would always be in competition with Porsche and it would probably still require activation (i.e. car system programming) by a Porsche dealer.

    Re: Unlocking the phone!!!

The real shocker is that there's absolutely no bluetooth option. Crazy.

Bluetooth may not be an option from Porsche but there is no reason why a kit cannot be fitted by a competent installer.

    Re: Unlocking the phone!!!

    Not the same though...

Not the same but very close, no aftermarket device can ever be fully integrated into a PCM unit, but Bluetooth and Ipod devices can work withought a clash with PCM. So you can have a phone call on your bluetooth, with the radio muting and sound coming through the car speakers.

    Re: Unlocking the phone!!!

It does seem old technology, my friend that owns an audio shop says it was more than possible to have the phone in the car detect and connect to the phone in your pocket and use it in exactly the same way.

Your friend who owns an audio shop was referring to Bluetooth, which was also mentioned in other posts above.

    Re: Unlocking the phone!!!

Yes I know, but I cant understand why they didnt do that to begin with. That would be cool!
