I have a Cayman, on order. Arrives in March, Pounds50k. I'm in two minds whether or not to just plump for a 997S. I think I love it more than the Cayman, but about there's Pounds20k difference, which is alot. Also the insurance is at least 4 figures more. I'm young and have not much driving experience so I must pay the price for that.
In my part of the country waiting lists for the Cayman are huge. My local dealer has informed me that I could easily pass it on straight away without losing hardly anything due to the fact that they have a 14 month waiting list. If for whatever reason, I wish I'd have just gone straight for the 997S then I can either a order a new one and wait a few months or get a low mileage used one.

Simple - take delivery of your Cayman, drive it for a while, and then realise how badly you need a 997S . You can then speak with absolute authority about how much better the 997 is. I had a Boxster for three years before my 997 and good though the Boxster was I was never content. I always new deep down that I had to own a 911 - and now I do there's no way I'd consider a 987 or derivative. I'm not saying they're bad cars (they're not). They're just not 911s and never will be.
