Rims; 18 inch vs. 19 inch

I've read that there have been some issues with the 19 inch rims on the S. Some say they aren't gripping as well as they should and that the increase in size has made the car unstable. The sidewalls of the bigger tires are too hard, creating what you call a radial run-out or more commonly described as wandering, making it difficult to drive straight. I have a 997 C2 and was thinking of upgrading to 19's , mostly for looks but I don't want to compromise stability or safety. Has anyone made this transition and noticed these problems?

Re: Rims; 18 inch vs. 19 inch

The rolling radius of the 19" tires is exactly the same as it is on the 18" tires. Since both sizes are offered by Porsche I doubt if there is any safety issue.
But I also doubt if you will notice any significant difference when driving between the two sizes anyway, apart from some increased harshness with the 19".
    Save your money....

I've got 5K miles logged with 19" CC's, have experienced nothing resembling above.

What is your source for this report?

Re: Rims; 18 inch vs. 19 inch

You sacrifice pothole destruction resistance and get a harsher ride. Wow, strange deal! I thought women were the only ones who wore uncomfortable shoes for looks?

I wish I could have gotten 18s on my S. Everybody, even KIDS, knows they're for looks alone. Makes me feel like a fool when I think about it. I'm too lazy/bizzy to get excited about spending $$ on getting 18s.

Re: Rims; 18 inch vs. 19 inch

If you feel like a fool, imagine all those new turbo owners with their 19". They've spent 33% percent more to look foolish in those 19" bling blings

That's right; I'm sure a number of Porsche purists feel the same way. I mean when you think of Porsche you're supposed to think of beautiful form and purposeful function, efficiency, nothing more than performance in an elegant package right? Well now we're getting more and more frilly, trendy, over-"customized" attention-getting bells and whistles wether we like it or not.

I beleive this is one of the comments made by one of the drivers on BMI in comparison to the base Carrera.

I have to admit that I'm a sucker for the 19s. I LOVE the look of them.

Thanks. I don't think we get Best MOtor Int'l (?) in the states.

Wow, I had not heard any behavior like that described in connection w/the 19's. Certainly is too bad the 19's are as heavy as they are-- 27 or 28 lbs. range for for 19" 997S rears sound portly compared to what else is out there.

As far as tracking a straight course, not sure what they mean by 'wandering' or maybe after awhile I'm just used to it. The 19's on my car always feel incredibly planted whether straight or lane changing, like the tires have NO CHOICE but to chart a straight course, has always intuitively felt that way due to the steamroller 295mm rear sections "PUSHING" my 997S straight....until I turn the steering wheel to interrupt the forward inertia developed by those rear slabs, then it carves arcs whichever way you point it.

A crude illustration of my theory (discount the underwire--errr, understeer...good goobly goo, they must've had good drugs back then):

Increasingly, my question for Porsche: with metallurgical technology advanced to where it is today, couldn't Porsche offer as standard equip.-- or God forbid charge an extra $1K per car if they had to-- to put a team to work on shaving 4 to 6 lbs. off 19's wheels' current obesity, but maintain durability necessary to tackle our cruddy road surfaces?
Sorry to meander, enjoying a nice Sierra Nevada Stout, watching Broncos/Patriots.

Gun San said that on BMI`s "Carrera Invasion", But specifically comparing it to 18' wheels on a base carrera on a track that he sayes is japanes mini Nurburgring due to its many unduelations in the road. So it can only be felt at the real extreemes with drivers in Gun Sans calibre, more so the harder suspension of the 3,8 probeabley excacebate the feeling. Remember Tiff Nedel and Viky on 5th gear said the 3.8 has feels like it has infinite grip at the rear.

Porsche feel the 19' setup that they gives the type of feel and peformance they were looking for in the 997S, remember they could of speced it with a higher aspect ratio or maybe even get the tyre manufacturer to develop a softer sidewall.

In professional racing teams they have a variety of the same compound tyres but with diffrent sidwall strengths, so as to get the best peformance and the drivers requested feel. So somtimes radial run-out is a good thing.
