    Cayenne Tyre Wear

    Hi all,

I am wondering how you guys are finding tyre wear on your Cayennes, as there seems to be a problem with the UK setup.

Our Cayenne has just had a new set of front tyres at one year and 12k miles, which given that a reasonable amount of this was straight, uncomplicated driving I found to be low. Our previous cars have all averaged around 20k miles or two years on a set of tyres, including the X5.

Now, the reason I am asking this is that our tyre wear was basically in a band on the outer rim of the front tyres, as if the front has too much negative camber and is riding on the outer edges too hard. The tyre specialist we used for the replacements told me that this was pretty much the way for all Cayennes, and that he had seen similar wear at around 5-6k miles, expecially on Turbos.

I contacted Porsche GB and they sent me a lot of 'stock answers', such as "it's a heavy car" (so was our X5), "it's a performance vehicle" (it's a V6, slower than our old X5), and best of all "this is normal for this car". They would not address the camber issue, but have offered me a discount on a 4-wheel alignment (which still works out at three times the price of the specialist who looks after my 911).

Now I don't know if anyone here agrees with me, but I am not happy with having to spend 500 pounds a year on a new set of front tyres just because Porsche believe that it's the norm. Is it me or is there a problem here?

(BTW, I know that a lot of people here are pretty wealthy and probably think nothing of spending that sort of money... but it's not the money that's hurting me as much as the princple, although I can think of better uses for the cash!)

    Thanks,
    Gary D.

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

    Hi Gary,
The way your tires were worn and the miles you got indicates that your truck needs an alignment.
A lot of owners seem to have a problem with this. Others, like myself, have had even wear on the front tyres and ~25k miles before time for replacement.
If your 911 specialist has a good alignment system/rack, it sounds attractive to use him for the job.

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

Depending on what the tyres are, on my S with Conti M & S on 18s I got no more than 15k, others with Dimaris have reported 20K on mostly motorway use.

The camber wear is alignment and should be sorted.

I just changed to Yokohamas to get more life, I am told 30K on the GO52's, its expensive I agree I could buy loads of stotty cakes with that sort of money. :-)

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

    Gary,

I'm running Michelin Diamaris on the 20" Sport Design rims on my V6 and at around 9,000 miles I don't have uneven wear. I also have a fair bit of tread depth to go before replacing and would estimate getting up to 16/18k miles out of them with no problem which is similar wear to an X5 3.0 I had running on 19" Diamaris. What tyre make and wheel size do you have?

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

    Hey GaryD...
I had a similar problem with my mother's Cayenne S but Porsche NA replaced the front tires at 8000 miles free of charge, recognizing there was a factory alignment issue. The problem is that she is now on 18,000 miles and they need to be replaced again. (all 4 tires)

Here's the funny thing... I have a Cayenne S as well and have no such issues. Exact same tires/tire size as my mother (Pirelli PZeros) and am now on 26,000 miles. My tires, which are still the original, are in better shape than her second set!!!

It's goofy car company rhetoric... they messed up but don't want to pay for it.

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

May be your mother is enjoying doing some "spririted driving" every day ...

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

Hi Gary, I had a thread going on the PCGB forum last year about exactly the same issue, except mine was on the inside at around 10,000 miles-18 months. PGB wouldn't do anything about it so I've ended up with Michelin mud & snows for the winter - full set at ATS for around Pounds600. I'll put the Contis back on in the spring, turning them so I should get the summer out of them. Someone else mentioned Pounds300 for an alignment so it's just as cheap to scrub another set. What sort of tyre is costing you Pounds500?

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

Hi all - and thanks for the replies.

The tyres are Michelin Diamaris on 20" Cayenne SportTechno alloys (the five-spoke ones). I've just had them replaced at Pounds458 for the pair... over Pounds100 cheaper than the price quoted by my OPC!!!

I cannot believe that Porsche GB have had their head so far up their own a** about this. On the advice of this forum I will go and get the wheels aligned (thanks)... but by the independent as I can imagine the OPC charging me Pounds300 to do nothing and then claim that the setup was right all along. I think I will also ask then for an alignment report, which I will send onto PGB. I don't envisage that it will achieve anything, but it will make be feel better to have another rant!

    Porsche....great cars, cra*p customer service.

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

It might also be worth checking out the geometry settings of the front suspension whilst your at it. If the camber is set up wrong you'll get uneven wear.

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

I had my tires exchanged at around 12000 km (aprox. 7500 mls), they were "finished". I had Michelin Diamaris 20'' tires. After the exchange, I got the same tire Michelin Diamaris but in a newer N classification (I think the older ones were N0, these were N1...I would need to look it up). Now I have almost 30000 km (18750 mls) and although I have driven a couple of thousand kms with winter tires, I think that the new Diamaris I got lasted much longer (and it is still good). So maybe this was one of the reasons Michelin & Porsche changed the compound of the tire. I'm driving the Cayenne very hard and very fast almost all the time.

Check with your dealer, he should have a list of the approved Cayenne tires. Look if there has been a change of generation (N0, N1, N2, and so on) and go for the latest generation. It may help.

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

RC, that's quite an endorsement, given that you seem to drive the way most of us over here wish we could. Did you notice any difference in grip with the new compound?

    Re: Cayenne Tyre Wear

I got approx. 20k mls on the stock Bridgestones.
