    Charg-o-mat I

My 997S has been hanging at the "Porsche Charg-o-mat I infusion" for about 3 weeks.

This morning when I checked it in the garage, there was no light on on the charger. When I pull the carger out of the outlet and re-insert it, the red light comes on just quickly.

Isn't it true that either a red light (when charging) or a green light (when battery is full) should be lit?

If this is the case, how would I be able to determine whether it is still working properly?

These lights are never accurate , I take them as just as a pretty little after add on . Just let the charge run its course (48hrs) then fire her up..

    throt..

    Re: Charg-o-mat I

read manual, ascertain proper operation. Test the charger by applying it to another car. I have to disagree with throt. The chips in the unit should do what they're designed to do, that includes powering up/down the LEDs.

    Re: Charg-o-mat I

The trouble is, I can't find the manual anymore ...

Throt, the Charg-o-mat is a so-called "trickle charger", and expressly intended to stay connected to a bettery in a car not in regular use. It just keeps the charge "topped up", and isn't even capable of reviving a flat battery.

    Thanks for that fritz..

    Re: Charg-o-mat I

Fritz is absolutely correct (as usual...). It is a trickle charger, which is supposed to remain plugged it all the time.

    But what about that light?

I dunno about "absolutely" correct because theoretically (i.e according to the laws of applied physics and chemistry) a 500 milliamp charger (Porsche battery maintainer) will charge a new (i.e.working) completely discharged 80 amp battery (our battery) in 160 hours.

    Re: Charg-o-mat I

Many products offer the owner's manual from their web site in PDF format as a download. Perhaps this one does? Perhaps I don't know what I'm talking about?

OK, OK, but the trickle charger part was correct. (Notice I wasn't brave enough to use "absolutely" again. )

It's the Porsche Charg-o-mat I. Unfortunately, I could not locate a PDF anywhere. The one that came with the product was just some tiny piece of paper.

Nah, you'r right Matt. it would be nuts to use the Charge-o-mat as a full-blown battery charger. Especially if the battery is connected to the car; the car draws like half the .5 amp current of the maintainer when it's parked.

    Re: Charg-o-mat I

I believe the Charge-O-Mat (dual purpose battery maintainer/charger) actually produces 3.3 amps for charging while the standard battery maintainer produces 0.5 amps. I called a few parts departments before purchasing one and these were the specs that were provided to me.

Thanks for the info. That's great. More is better for the various situations one might encounter. Justifies the doubled price too.

    Re: Charg-o-mat I

Since you rather debate over amps and volts and the likes, I posted the questions over on renntech.

Response was that the light is off when the battery is fully charged.

That answer was on the tip of my tongue Matt , you beat me ..

No , glad its all sorted .

    Re: Charg-o-mat I

Matt C, you're right. I just looked and mine came with squat directions too.
Hedgehog, mine says "Output 12V-DC/500mA. Whatever THAT means.
