    Information to driver

I took RC's advise and test drove both the Porsche Cayenne Turbo and the E55 AMG. Very different vehicles!

I think I saw a lot more info for the driver around the speedometer in the Cayenne than in the E (e.g., what gear in automatic, fuel consumption, average speed). Am I correct?

The E55 salesman who seemed ot be in a hurry could not explain how to get info. I was using only one of hte buttons on hte left. I wondered if there were more buttons on hte steering that changed the info.

Also the owners' manual seemed ot be on hte web. But no more. It has been replaced by a puff piece. Am I correct?

    Re: Information to driver

Well, you can use the buttons to display the needed information (fuel consumption, etc.) but it is somehow pretty confusing to use the buttons on the steering wheel.
The gear you're in (and shift program) is displayed under the speedo.
I like the Cayenne's central display more because it is in color but the E55 display does the job pretty well too.

Yes, the Cayenne Turbo and the E55 are very different vehicles but if I'd live in a speed limited country with a kid or two, I'd clearly go for the Cayenne Turbo.
Just imagine: at the stop light, you just have to press the throttle on the Cayenne Turbo and you are almost as fast to 60 mph as a Porsche 911. And probably faster as any E55 because of it's horrible traction, especially when the pavement isn't dry or a little bit slippery. And we're talking about a 2.3 ton car for the whole family.

On the other hand, the E55 is a fine sports limousine and probably more fun on the street than a Cayenne Turbo.

    Re: Information to driver

The buttons on the steering wheel will scroll throgh many menu's on the E55. Its confusing at first, but with practice you memorize the menus and can quickly scroll through them without thinking.

Also one of the menu's is for car settings, which you can set many of the options in the car. I love this feature as on my BMW if you wanted to change one thing, the dealer would have to hook it up to his computer to change it.

As RC said, it would be nice if it was color, but at least the E55's LCD is very sharp and easy to read.

    Thanks RC and Texas.

BTW, RC did you find out anything about using all weather tires on the E55?

Nope. AMG/DC doesn't approve them I'm afraid. Only winter tires are approved. You might find yourself some all weather M&S tires in the E55's approved size but trust me, you wouldn't be happy, especially in summer time but also in winter time. I drove a E55 with winter tires a few days ago and I hated it. Traction is a catastrophy, the ESP jumps in all the time. Horrible. BTW: I have a E 320 4-matic Station Wagon in my garage right now, a dealer loaner because my car is at the dealership for some further fixes. For cold regions with lots of snow, the E 500 4-matic might be a better choice than the E 55.

Thanks RC. I want to avoid winter tires for the reason you mentioned. But I thought All season might do the trick.

    Re: Information to driver

What is M&S? The reason I am asking [I don't know what M and S stands for] is that the MB manual recommends M+S winter tires. I had thought they were all weather as in Pzero.
