    Ownership comments

For all, but expecially KenH, please share your ownership experience ... the good, bad, and everything in between. My car arrives next weekend, but want to hear what you've encountered so far. I still plan on extensive test drive before taking delivery. Oh, can we all please be civilized and constructive in all comments and replies in this thread? Thanks ahead of time.

    Re: Ownership comments

    schao,

You, MikeN, and others will take delivery of Caymans on or about January 15th. I look forward to your comments.

    Re: Ownership comments

I get my car around Feb 20th. I went for an extensive test drive. The first thing I've noticed is squeaking from somewhere in the back. To me it sounds that it was coming from the trunk, but the sales guy was insisting that it was from the passenger seat

Anyway, when I raised this matter the sales guy told me not to worry because demo cars are pre production units which they expect such things or defects in some units! But assured me no such thing is expected or will be compromised by Porsche.

Let's wait and see . . . hope mine does not have any of the very irritating stuff.

    Re: Ownership comments

Had mine delivered nearly a month ago. Can't be happier with my choice. Fantastic car that looks so much better than any picture ever depicted. Fit and finish is miles ahead of the 986/996 generation with sports seats that feel better than the ones in my turbo S.

I'm still running it in so I'm stuck to the 4000rpm limit but the engine sounds sweet and ready to rev with good torque. It never feels lacking at all. It corners pretty good with great balance and I especially love running it in sport mode.

Mine is arctic silver/cocoa brown with 19" carrera S wheels. It's got Sport Chrono as well as PSM. I got it as a replacment for my wife's cayenne S and she can't be any happier with cayman.

    Re: Ownership comments

Schao. I am in the US at the moment so returned to my 997 - the Cayman is in England.
The first things I notice about the 997 now I am back to it after the Cayman are:
    - there is a lot less ambient noise. That is both general transmission noise, tire roar and exhaust sound.
    - there is more suspension compliance and none of the "bounciness" I experience with the Cayman.
    - the steering is duller on the 997, whereas the Cayman is like a car on rails.
    - in fact everything on the 997 seems a little "heavier" and somewhat less agile.
    - I miss the hatchback. Although the rear space is quite small it is a lot more convenient to use than the front trunk.
    - I really don't find any practical differences between the five dial layout and the three dial. In both cases the analog speedometers are pretty much unusable as the graduations are too small but the digital displays suffer from lag. Combined together it is sometimes very difficult to be sure of one's exact speed. I expect a ticket before too long!
    - the engine characteristics are surprisingly different, the 997 is more torquey whereas the Cayman loves to rev.
    - the Cayman seems to respond to delicacy of inputs more than the 997.

The only problem I have had in the Cayman is some irritating plastic noises at the rear side. Because it is such a small cabin these are particularly annoying as they are so close to your ears. Being charitable I put these down to the person that fitted the Tracker (=LoJack) rather than the factory. I am somewhat obsessive about such things and found that it was due to two plastic trim pieces rubbing together. Silicone grease on both surfaces fixed the problem.

No other problems with either car.

In general I have to say that I absolutely love the Cayman and as things stand at the moment if I were replacing the 997 it would be with a Cayman rather than another 997. Both are quite fast enough for me and I have no interest in the 997S.
But that does not mean that I am saying that the Cayman is "better" than the 997, only that it matches my current preferences a litle closer. Other people will be different.

Both 997 and Cayman have 18" wheels, manual gearboxes and don't have PASM.

I have also been driving my M3 recently and whilst it is undoubtedly fast it seems quite uncouth in some respects in comparison with the Cayman. The steering is vague, the gearchange clunky and overall it is somewhat "unrefined" in comparison with both Porsches.
I doubt if I will keep it.

I don't think there is anything very new here but that is it.

    Thanks for sharing, KenH.
