    997 news

    My dealer just called me to propose me to go on one of those Porsche organised trips in January.
    This one is in Finland, ice driving Cayennes and 996, sounds great but expensive. Anyone has done it?
    Would you recommend it? I'm considering.
    Also, on a recent trip to Weissach, he saw the 997, no camouflage driven by a Porsche employee. He saw it from behind and as soon as the drive saw my friend was looking, he drove away, but he saw it, lucky b....
    Basically, it's weird because all he could tell me it that it is at the same time more curvy but also more angular than the 996, yes I know, weird.
    But very different though, definitly not a restyling, the difference is obvious, not like 996 version 1 and 2, the 997 is more muscular and aggressive.
    He admitted there is some 993 in that 997.
    Also, he told me that the exhaust pipes are square. just like the 993 second generation
    And he's been confirmed that it will be officially presented at the next Paris auto show, that's in September 2004
    Also interesting, in France sales breackdown as followed:
    60% cayenne
    35% Carrera
    5% boxster

    So is this mean that all the testing at Nürburgring is finished? or they're still testing driving the mules around?

    I went on the Arctic driving experiance earlier this year and can confirm that it is the best Pounds3K you will ever spend!

    Great people and very well run, you will not beleive what a set of snow tyres can do to a 911!

    One word of warning, Doris's is very dangerous!!

    IMO, 997 testing is finished since a very long time.
    Both 997 and 987 are ready.
    Mules we see around disguised are 998 now.
    Remember, for Ferrari for example, 360 development started when the 355 came out.
    996 started when the 993 came out.
    So yes, I really think that the 997 is 100% ready, annoying isn't it?

    I'm sorry, but that's not right. The 987- and 997-development is not finished until its presentation. There is at least one more terminal stage for 987 and the 997 to come...

    And, as far as I know, there are no mules for the 998 yet. And, by the way, if the 997- and 987-development is finished and the prototypes we now see are now 998-mules, what are the mules we expect to be 987-prototypes? 988?

    And why should 998-mules look completely the same like prototypes for a car, that wasn't even introduced yet?

    Get over it, none of us know, not even YOU. It's cool to speculate but you seem a little excited. The 998 is a completely different car from the 997, not to mention its a generation after.

    Development is indeed practically (this means the car is ready to roll at "green light" from the board of CEOs) finished, what you see are 997 driving around for further testing to improve reliability and to find design flaws. This happens even after the 997 introduction. Why are the 997 "mules" still camoflaged? The answer is very simple: Porsche doesn't want people to see how the 997 will look alike, especially because they don't want to hurt 996 sales (and IT WILL hurt 996 sales ).

    Remember the Boxster S? The Boxster S was COMPLETELY ready one year(!) before introduction. I saw a Boxster S which had an accident (guess who was driving... ) at the factory without(!) camouflage one year before official introduction. Porsche later on admitted to the press that they delayed the Boxster S because the standard Boxster was selling too well.
    Unfortunately a lot of decisions at Porsche are about marketing and marketing strategy. Long live the shareholders...

    Guys,

    Don't be so hard on Porsche. Yeah...I know it is very frustrating to have to wait on a blockbuster product when you know it is ready to go...but there again...Porsche is in the business of selling sports cars (err...sporty cars...forgot about the Cayenne! ) so they have to milk their current products as much as they can for profits! But with the hint RC is giving us...the 997 must be a stunner! Am I right RC? You know more about this than you are telling us?! Have you seen the real thing?

    Trust me...I feel everyone's pain...not only am I eagerly awaiting the 997 (which I feel will combine the best elements of both the 996 and 993) but I have had my order placed here in the US for a VW Golf R32 for over a year and am now told I will not be able to expect it until around February or March of next year by which time the new Golf Mark V will have been shown at the Detroit Autoshow! What the !$@%! is that! At least Porsche doesn't cross over product lines. But I guess VW believes that since the R32 is an enthusiast's car...people will by it regardless of whether the new Golf comes out or not. Porsche can not do that though because all of the Porsches are enthusuasts cars! But either way...my heart is set on the R32 for my daily driver so carry on I must.

    Speaking of new Porsches...RC...I also take it that the next Boxster and Boxster Coupe are also ready to go and awaiting the Board decision for "go live"?

    Yes, you could be right.
    I just like the image of thousands of 997s ready to be dellivered stored in a secret factory
    My dealer seemed sure about the presentation date though, Paris show next Sept, which sounds long but reasonnable I guess.

    Dear mobile,

    One piece of advice from my own experience, don't think about the resale value just enjoy the car and don't let this kind of thoughts spoil your joy.

    I was always concern about the resale value as soon as I would buy the car and in order not to lose money I would sale it quickly; believe it or not I almost lost my pants on deals like this.

    I decided to keep what I got and enjoy it while I can.

    First at all I want to emphasize that I honestly do not know 100% sure when the 996 will be replaced by the 997. So everything I say is speculation, as most posts regarding the 997 are.
    Personally, I'd sell my 996 now and wait for further development. Especially if it was built before the 996 facelift.

    And another thing: after selling my 996 Turbo, I realized that you can actually forget about resale value. If you're lucky, you find somebody who wants exactly YOUR car with YOUR options. If not, you're in trouble. My dealer didn't want to take my car in, so I had to sell it to Mercedes. Then, Mercedes sold it for almost "nothing" to somebody else. If I'd knew that before, I would have bought the car back myself.

    I decided to handle my sports car dreams like this in the future because I'm not Bill Gates and I can't afford buying a new sports car every year:
    1. I choose a sports car for a period of at least 3-4 years of ownership
    2. I choose something spectacular, fast and expensive
    3. I choose a Lamborghini or Porsche.

    If I'd think about resale value, I'd buy a Mercedes Diesel...

    i helped selling a blue 320 CDI estate E class some time ago -- even this is difficult. resale value isn't what it used to be. the only car i know which holds it's value quite well is a 360 spider with F1 tranny. but even with this one prices have dropped recently.

    thanks for your opinion!

    I agree with both of you. From a financial point of view the resale value isn't something you should think about when you are planning to buy a new car.

    However, since the first time I visit my Porsche dealer (and saw this beautiful black GT3) I'm dreaming of a GT3. Don't know why. It's just as it is.

    Unfortunately I didn't take the chance to buy a GT3 last year because there were so many rumours about it: Not easy to drive, only for the track, no PSM, bumpy at higher speeds, etc. So I decided to go for a C4S: Sporty, great looking and easy to drive (almost).

    But after some track experiences and a test drive in a new GT3 I still have this problem: I want a GT3!

    Now I have the great chance to get this GT3 RS. So, what would you do..?

    I already got an offer from my Porsche dealer for the C4S for next year. Yes, it hurts! (Almost more than I can bear) But as you already mentioned: From a financial point of view...

    My only thoughts are: Is it a good idea to sale the car in spring or would the resale value drop down (dramatically) because of the new 997?

    My guess is that there will be no significant difference?
