    Owners of base 997 (non S )

I am soon making my order for a new 997 but I am comfused.
All the 997 S owners are talking about not buying the base model.
Can YOU, owners of the base 997 give me help of chosing between 997/997 S.
Are You satisfied with your base 997 or are you thinking that you did wrong not buying the 997 S?

If money was no question = 997S, But it is all about value for money that counts for me!

    Thanks for your help guys!!!
    Dave

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

If you have the extra us$10K to blow buy the S if not buy the non-S. It's not exactly throwing/blowing the $10K away, you get some worthwhile extras.

"Value for the money" is not a Porsche innovation. With Porsche you get what you overpay for.

Buy a Corvette if you want true "value for the money."

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

    Look at your intended options.

Since the S comes with PASM, Bi-Xe, 19" and sport steering wheel, the price gap becomes less of an issue if you intend to add these things to your base 997 anyway.

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

Initially, my intentions were to buy the 997S. However, at the time I was going through some arbitration issues with BMW. The day they awarded me my full refund for my M3 I went to the local Porsche dealer to order an S. Unfortunately, they had no S models available, but they did have one gorgeous silver base 997. I test drove it, and literally fell in love with the car. It will now be 1 year since the purchase, and I could not be happier. The car is amazing!

But....driving this car only makes me wonder what the S could do. So I have decided to wait out the remainder of my lease (1 and a half years) and place an order for either an S or perhaps a GT3.

My advice, would be to test drive both cars and see if you really think it's worth purchasing the S. To some of us, it is worth the extra $$, but to some of us it's not. It's all on personal taste. You should however take into consideration what you get as standard with the S and what you have to order as an option on the base model.

All the Best and Good Luck!
    Ray

    Are Corvettes available in Sweden?

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

    Hi Dave!

    Fellow countryman '

I'm more or less in the same situation as you are. I'm currently a boxster 987 owner and will trade that for a 997 within the next upcoming months. I have decided to go for the 997 C2S based on the fact that I did regret from day 1 that i didn't get the S-version in the boxster.

For resale value the S is a better buy if you anyway will add upp options like 19":s, pasm, bi-xenon etc. That equipment alone is half the way to a S.

If you buy an expensive car like a 997 you don't want to sit in your new dream-car the day it arrives and think "should I've ordered the S?" and everytime you'll see an "S" on the road you'll know that it's a little bit faster than your own car ... If you know that you wont ask yourself this question, then fine.. go for the base-model ..

Since the step-up to a 997TT and GT3 is so much more money, this is not even in the ball-park, but stepping up from a base to a S for 10K EUR is more justified IMO and will make your ownership more pleasant
    Cheers / Lukas

Yes, they are.. but I have no plans buying one

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

Don't forget - the S also has the larger brakes...

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

I tried both 997 and 997S before I ordered my Porsche. Since both cars where with same specs(-20mm/LSD,PCCB,Sports Chrono and PSE) I was suprised with differences-they were small! 997S was little bit faster and has more power in the low revs... With same options price difference is around 7000Euro. If you buy plain 997(read-not too many options), 997S is a better choice but, if you add many options to your 997... Best thing is too try both version(and with same options if you can-this is important!) and decide for youself. I ordered 997S(X51,PCCB,-20mm/LSD,Sport Chrono, etc.).

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

I have tried them both but still cant decide.
The plan is a almost plain (no extras) 997 /997S. Options not that important to me, more important the engine.
I liked the sound of the 997 S
Dont know if 997S is worth it?
Also thinking of resale value of the 997/997S?
Looks like the 997S has more price drop than 997 in Germany!

Yes, but unless you will drive the car on the track, the S's bigger brakes will actually detract from performance (more unsprung and rotating mass).

The bigger brakes are only and advantage in braking performance when used repeatedly in a track setting (especially with track tires). Stopping distances are not improved on a the street with street tires and the bigger brakes.

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

Then... How does this sound to you-997 with BiXenon,PASM(or -20mm/LSD same price),19",PSE,Leather Sport Seats and Navi(this is very important when you will sell your car in few years time...).

    What do you mean?

    997 or 997S?

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

997(non S) version. With PSE(Porsche Sports Exhaust) you will have better sound then normal 997S, IMO.

    Do you really mean that!

I have not tried the PSE but if the non S with PSE has cooler sound than the 997 S with the nice intake (helmhotz resonator) sound than its a non S I whant!!

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

    1. Without PSE sound of 997S is way better then sound of 997(both 997 and 997S without PSE).
2.With PSE on both 997 and 997S sound is allmost the same,IMO!!
3.997 with PSE sound better then 997S without PSE, again IMO.

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

How about the nice sound at high rpm on the 997 S (Helholtz resonator) Is that sound not more thrilling than the exhaust sound?

Does the resonator sound on 997 S dissapear when you have the option PSE?

    Thanks

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

I had a base 997 for 3 months and just got a 997 S. I had planned to get the S before I got the base 997. If you are looking for bang for the buck or value, then the S is a no brainer. You get 30 more hp. X51 gets 26 more hp for 17k. Looking at the X51, the hp on the S can be valued at 19.5k (but you get more than hp in the X51, so lets call the hp incease worth 10k). PCCB costs 8k, I believe the S brakes are the turbo brakes which are bigger. I have no idea what Porsche would charge for the larger brakes, but let's call it 2k? For red brake calibers alone they charge 1.7k (yes this is a total ripoff, so we will say $500 at most). PASM is 2k. Bi-Xenon is 1.1k. Sport wheel is $250. 19" wheels is 1.5k. Porsche says the Galvano trim is worth $750 (It is nicer). This totals about 18k and you only have to pay 10k.

The S is the only option worth the money. So if it is value you want, get the S and no other options since they are all overpriced.

I got the S with 15k of options since I have been told, you only live once, then you die.

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

Yes, Resonator sound is gone but, you really should try it for yourself! Do not forget that 997S with X51(Factory power kit 381hp/415Nm) is coming with PSE included in X51!
To my ears sound of PSE is better then resonator sound...

You only live once, but you have to sleep well during that time
Money is an issue, otherwise I would have ordered a 997 Turbo

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

993, in Europe situation and prices are little bit different...

Why does the resonator sound dissapear?
Is it just that the exhaust sound is higher and is not heard or does they dissconect it in some way?

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

To answer your question, I love my 997 and have no regrets about not getting the S

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

There is and will be several low mileage S available for probably less than price of a new base 997. Investigate that before deciding. The used base and S market will increase when the 997TT is made available.

Another problem for the 997 is the Cayman. The introduction of this car will have a negative impact on the resale of the 997.

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

The acceleration was not very different (I could not feel the difference) when I test drove an S vs a base 997 with chrono/PASM and 19-in wheels (xenons and all the other S stuff). So all I'm missing is an self adjusting clutch and I presume slightly larger brakes that I've never measured that provide no significant difference in braking ability. Both are fine cars, however. I was on the fence too with the choice and I remain there.

I have a 997 C2 Cab. I decided to go with the C2 Cab instead of the C2S. Glad I made the decision. Now I don't feel like I am missing anything by not getting the S. If money was not an option I would get a F430. If you want to race the car or you are a hard driver get the S and add the X51 package.

Re: Owners of base 997 (non S )

Non S is fine in UK with over populated roads and large numbers of speed cameras. I went for a base 997 with few options - sports seats, nav and seal grey paint. Suits me fine and I don't feel I am lacking in power, braking ability or handling, the 911 experience is there to enjoy.

So the 997 S has a self adjusting clutch, not the base model?

Is there any difference in feel or how easy it is to press down the clutches on the two models?
