Grey cab top on GT silver

On a GT silver cab seems like grey cab top would be a great choice , when the top is up it would match the car and not give that two tone effect you get with a black top on a car that is not black . Always bought black cabs and got tired of the battle with keeping black clean . The last cab I had I got was silver , was so easy to keep clean it was like it did not show dirt , but when the top was up it really did not look as good as the black car becuase the top did not match . Saw this photo of a GT silver cab with the top also grey , does anyone have pictures of a GT silver cab with the grey top up . If the top is matching the car it may help the silver cab look better with the top up .

Re: Grey cab top on GT silver

A grey top looks great. However, tops which are not black are difficult to keep clean. Maybe a blue top is still okay, but I personally would refrain from a grey top. This was also what the guys from my Porsche center said.

But this may depend on the region in which you live. If it is always sunny and dry, you may take whatever you want.

Re: Grey cab top on GT silver

Yep Miami/LA top is never up , when you go to park it is nice for security ... there must be a way to do some kind of industrial strength scotch guard to keep it spotless , dealers never tells you about this stuff clear bra et they want you to buy a new car when the wear and tear sets in . I think the blue would still give you the two tone effect and that breaks up the lines of the roof . It would be nice if there were more color options for the roof and perfect matches for some colors like silver . Again I think tis is why black cabs look a little better than other colors when the top is up becuase the top and car look as one .

Grey tops are just as easy to keep clean

I have a grey top on my 02 996, and do not have any problem keeping it clean. Twice a year I give it a good cleaning with the Porsche Cabriolet top soap, and then give in a fresh coat of the Porsche top protector (the Porsche version of Scotchguard). In between, I use a vacuum and a lint roller to pick up dust and dirt.

Re: Grey tops are just as easy to keep clean

thanks is that the cab won at a Porsche concourse I was at ?

Re: Grey tops are just as easy to keep clean

I think the combo you're considering is a knockout. If you normally keep your car clean regularly, then don't worry about it. From my personal experiences, and from my parking-lot observations, there's a GOOD REASON why some folks have difficulty keeping their light-colored tops clean, and that reason is crystal-clear when you closely inspect the care and condition of the rest of their car. They don't think they're doing anything wrong, and blame the top. But the real problem is that they don't "get it" when it comes to upkeep and detail, and it's their own OBLIVIOUS nature, or low standards, or neglect, or any combination of the three, that allows the top (and the entire car) to get away from them.

Just my gut-check on the subject. If you're a weekly-washer, or close enough to that, and you follow Orient's advice, you should stay looking like-new for a long time.

I agree with you. Cabs look best when they aren't two-tone. Everybody can defend it any way they want, but how do you think a silver COUPE would look with a black fabric roof installed?? What's really the difference? You get a "get out of styling jail free card" by virtue of having a folding roof?

Re: Grey tops are just as easy to keep clean

    One word: mistake.

Everytime I see a tan or grey top on cars on the road the car looks good but the top looks like sh*t. Means that they show dirt (can't be cleaned), wear and tear much faster than black.

There you go again 69bn with your excellent points!!!

Problem is grey shows dirt and wear faster and more clearly. There are VERRRRRRRRY few people willing to make a commitment to keep them clean. There is also sheet which gets on the top (like tree sap) which will take an immediate attempt by museum conservator or art restoration expert to eliminate completely. It's sad, but the only time a grey top (or any top really, when you look more closely) looks good is when the car is new and in the showroom. The other part I don;t like is the top is grey CLOTH and teh car is "grey" paint. The paint always looks BETTER than the cloth (with framework). If the cloth is black and teh car is grey you don;t naturally compare the two materials... . Sorry, I HATE those non-black tops (maybe metropole blue is okay).

Ah hah, I think this is the core of the issue for you. Personal preferrence, combined with photos of neglected tops belonging to oblivious/uncaring owners.

Hey, if you don't like 'em, you just don't. I can understand that completely.

I think they look great, and make the car look far less "hacked-up", regardless of whether cloth is as visually appealing as paint (of course it isn't, unless you've got a power-retractable rigid roof a-la SL500, you've got to live with the styling compromise of a cloth roof).

Anyhow, I respect your distaste for colored convertible tops.

But I think they're sharp, make the car look less "busy" (which I'm surprised isn't a factor for you in this matter MMD!!), and are not that hard to maintain for the average-to-above-average neat-freak.

Go with what you think looks good.

Re: Grey cab top on GT silver

Ahhh...the old classic is back...You may remember I was going through this huge see-saw on a daily basis with my dealer.

I was dead set on the grey top - then with a little advice from my RentTeam buddies - the black is now the color of choice.

I saw a Silver / Grey cab recently - and whilst it certainly didn't look bad - I was then 100% sure that I had made the right choice with the black!

Re: Grey cab top on GT silver

Have you seen grey top on GT silver I think it would look great with the top up , seems like better than black , but I have not seen a picture . The picture I started the thread with looks like a great match but the top is not up . GT silver 997TT cab with grey top and black interior w/ CGT seats that are black and grey already ..... If you ar not on the list for a spider this is not a bad alternative .

Re: Grey cab top on GT silver

Ocean....I saw the Artic silver / stone grey - and whilst nice - it just lacked that wow factor for me, something was just missing.

Don't get me wrong, from the few pictures I did see of the Silver / Grey - it did look very nice - but in real life, under the sky with true light, I just didn't think it was that special. Trust me on this - I was ADAMANT that it would look amazing from the few pics I found on the net.

Perhaps the contrast just wasn't right, something just didn't fit. Try and see one in real life and then make a judgement....I did....and now I am 100% sure that I made the right decision!

Re: Grey cab top on GT silver

I can believe that becuase the colors do not match exactly , on a black cab the car and the top are really the exact same color just diferent texture .

Re: Grey cab top on GT silver

That is a tough one. Whilst light silver cars (Arctic and GT silver) look great in coupe (hardtop form), they do lose a little bit in the "looks" department with a softtop. When I was making the colour choice for my 987S, my first instinct was to go with Arctic silver; great colour, doesn't show dirt but it didn't look right to my eyes with the black top up. My salesman insisited to stay away from the grey top because from his experience it shows wear and tear MUCH quicker than a darker top ; metropol blue or black best choice. I decided to go with Seal Grey and black top; nice colour combo for a cab. Darker colours are definitely nicer with a dark softtop.
I agree that grey or any light colour softtop would show stains, wear and tear more. Stick with black or metropol blue.

Re: Grey cab top on GT silver

I think the grey top looks fantastic, just like the brunette in the pic

Re: Grey tops are just as easy to keep clean

I like the Grey top. Gives the car a different look. I wouldn't think it would be that hard to keep clean. Now I have never owned one so I can not say for sure.

EXACTLY That's the key. read what other guys say, try to sort thru the issues, discuss with your wife and/or girlfriends (you're lucky guy if she's/they're really interested). Then get what you like!!

Yeah, me too. You'd think it would look great. Then I saw one AS/greytop for the first time and I was shocked by how totally UN UN UN impressive it looked (not like I imagined it would be). I attributed it to the fact that grey/silver metallic paint is sooooo much more pleasing to our eye-candy-hungry eyes and the dull fabric top (in the same color) just couldn't compete! Looked like, body repair primer or somebody sanded the top and left it dull. Weird. That's how it starts: then the dirt begins to accumulate.

    Cocoa is my choice

I would pick the Cocoa interior with Cocoa top, hands down, with GT Silver, Seal, or Arctic Silver. My personal preference would be Seal/Cocoa, which i think is the perfect combo for the 997 cab or coupe, and given that this combo is featured in Porsche's 911 brochure, seems like Porsche agrees. personally, i think grey tops look awful and get dirty way too easily, but that's my humble opinion.

    Re: Cocoa is my choice

I saw a Stone Grey top yesterday at the dealer- it looks GREAT- looks very dark compared to the previous model Graphite Grey top.

I can't imagine it showing any more dirt etc. than other colors as long as you care for it and aren't an absolute slob!

I'm sold- no doubt about it - C4S Cab,Arctic Silver, Stone Grey Top, Blk/ Stone Grey interior, PCCB, X51(?), Grand Tour, Sport Shift, Thicker Sports Wheel, Bose,... leather, leather and more leather....!

Now, it's time to find the best deal/ service before placing my order in January! 2006 is going to be ggrrrrrreat!

    Gregg,

    Thanks a lot! I can't wait!

So far, 1 dealer has offered to pay for the Factory Delivery- I plan to finalize my order within the next 30 days.

stone grey on a 987 notice framework and wrinkles.

    Re: Cocoa is my choice

Sorry, MMD- NOT even close to what it looks like in real life! Black is nice but I definitely prefer Stone Grey! It's way, way beautiful and classy. I was very pleasantly surprised how dark it was! With proper care - NO problems! Also, in California it'll be down at least 90% of the time. Just wait, Bro- you'll see!

    Re: Cocoa is my choice

    Another, sorry.
