Airbag Deactivation device- Fact or Fiction?

When I took delivery of my 2006 C2S 3 weeks ago, my sales person told me that the 2006 997s has the intelligent air-bag technology and as such does not require the dealer installed deactivation device for front-mounted car seats. Yet I have read a number of posts on this very subject and it seems that some 2006 997 owners have either had the deactivation mechanism installed or are contemplating the installation.

Was my sales guy correct or does a deactivation device exist for the 2006 997?

    Thanks for your thoughts.

Re: Airbag Deactivation device- Fact or Fiction?

It may still exist but you don't need it. If my kids ride in the front (one at a time) the deactivation light is on. They both weigh 40-45 lb. ea.

Re: Airbag Deactivation device- Fact or Fiction?

    From the '06 997 manual:

    Advanced Airbag

Your vehicle is equipped with a weight sensing system for the passenger's seat in accordance with U.S. Federal/Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 208.

Depending on the weight acting on the front passenger's seat, the front passenger's airbag will automatically be switched on and off.

Re: Airbag Deactivation device- Fact or Fiction?

Look at the center console just behind the stick shift lever, if you have a warning light there than your car should have the smart airbags, my 06S sure does.

Re: Airbag Deactivation device- Fact or Fiction?

People don't seem to understand the function of the automatic deactivation system. This function only helps to save repair money to avoid an airbag deployment even if nobody is sitting next to the driver.
It is NOT a replacement for the airbag deactivation system when using a child seat. This can be retrofitted, check older posts for the part number.

Re: Airbag Deactivation device- Fact or Fiction?

In the US its a requirement so that light weight people won't get slammed by the airbag. Its not for saving the airbag cost its a safety feature.

Interesting. Because it should be the same weight sensor installed on EC cars, only that it is used for cost reasons only. Maybe it has to do something with the different crash tests? I heard that tests to certify cars for the US have to take in consideration that the driver and passengers are NOT wearing seatbelts.

Re: Airbag Deactivation device- Fact or Fiction?

    It's both!

No passenger: no light no deployment. save $
Light passenger: Light on, no deployment. save neck injury

That is correct. If you plan to use a child car seat you will need to have the airbag deactivation system installed by the dealer.

Why? It's automatically deactivated when a child or no one is in the seat.

Good question. In Germany, the airbag deactivation device is definetely mandatory if you're transporting a child in a child seat. Don't know about the US. I'll try to find more information about it but here's a link from the US website:
It may be possible that only cars BEFORE MY 2006 need this kit in the US.
    http://www.porsche.com/usa/accessoriesandservices/tequipment/n36/n103/n135/

Regarding the airbag deactivation kit for Germany: for kids UNDER 27 kg, this kit is a must.

Re: Airbag Deactivation device- Fact or Fiction?

Understood... makes sense that MY06 changed this feature.

US cars went from drivers air bag --> driver & passenger w/o deactivation --> keyed deactivation --> automatic deactivation.
