Can Traffic Pro be installed in '03 cars with MOST bus?

I have read that there are issue with the new MOST bus and "standard" equipment. I can't picture myself w/o the navigation in the car
    Thanks

You might want to ask Horst, at the Becker Board:

Thanks. I called this afternoon... Maybe they'll tell me tomorrow

Why should this be a problem and why would you want to connect the Traffic Pro to the MOST Bus (which isn't possible anyway)?
You just have to do a "conventional" install job, using standard wiring and connecting the Traffic Pro to the battery.
    No problem at all.

Re: Can Traffic Pro be installed in '03 cars with MOST bus?

The dealers in the US claim the TP will only work with pre-2003 models due to the MOST bus incompatibility. If you install a TP in a car with MOST, at a minimum you will lose the function of any other devices on the bus, such as external CD changer, amp, or DSP. There is also an unverified report that the MOST bus is used to communicate with the alarm system and if the bus is disconnected it will set off an alarm because the system will think the head unit is stolen.

However, the CDR-23 unit in the 2004 GT3 does not use the MOST bus, so there must be a way around it. Possibly through some settings that can be programmed with the PST2. However, no one from Becker or Porsche seems to be interested in helping us figure out how.

Read my first post again and you have your answer.

Re: Can Traffic Pro be installed in '03 cars with MOST bus?

    RC,
It's more complicated than you think... I have been reading about this for 2 days now, including very informative posts from the guy designing these tthings. I think that I got it, but I could be wrong... In any case, I spoke with the guys at Becker and they confirmed that it's not possible (they're in the business of selling this stuff remember )
Here's what I think that I understood: All of the "appliances" are networked in the car on a fiber and each has a signature. For some silly reason, the car anti theft is networked with the radio and if you remove the original radio, the car won't start. Therefore, the only way to do what you said is to actually leave the "old" radio in install the Traffic Pro also which doesn't work with the current cables and lengths... As I said. more complicated than you thought.

Re: Can Traffic Pro be installed in '03 cars with MOST bus?

I HIGHLY doubt the car won't start if there is no headunit. Perhaps you have to uninstall the unit with the keys in the ignition? What happends if the fuse blows for the radio? Or what would happen in the event your headunit was stolen on a trip, and you needed to get home? Your car would have to be towed and a new unit installed?? Seems stupid.

You can install any type of headunit in any car with a MOST bus. As RC said, just wire it like any other aftermarket unit, it doesn't need to use the fancy bus. You may have to tap some wires to send/receive the correct signals if you dont have a suitable adapting harness. I bet if you brought it to a reputable car audio/video place they could do it for you.

Ah well, so my 4 engineering graduate degrees weren't all that useful... I'm so happy to have you guys set me straight!

Re: Can Traffic Pro be installed in '03 cars with MOST bus?

    JM,

I think you need to find an independent shop with a PST2 and that is willing to spend some time experimenting. There has to be a way to tell the car controller that there is no radio, because radio delete is an option, at least on the ROW GT3s if not on other models. Once the controller is programmed to think that there is no radio, there should be no problem with the alarm system, and you could install the TP without connecting it to the MOST bus.

Re: Can Traffic Pro be installed in '03 cars with MOST bus?

I tried that Karl, with my Porsche dealer here in Atlanta... they said NO WAY it can be done. they had a bunch of Traffic Pros that they were trying to move on '03 cars that they stull had and could not figure it out... that's when I started the threads on the various boards. It seems that it's like an old token ring architecture that requires to know who to send the signal to and if it doesn't find it, nothing works. At least so they tell me... Trust me, I would LOVE to keep my Traffic Pro. I love it! It works fast, it's realiable and it's AUX enabled so i can play my IPOD songs on it... There would be no reason for me to sell if it had the smallest chance of working!
Take care and thanks to everyone for your ideas/help

Re: Can Traffic Pro be installed in '03 cars with MOST bus?

A problem would be to install a CAN/MOST Bus unit to a car without CAN/MOST Bus (and even here are already solutions available for other cars, for example installing the Mercedes E-class COMAND APS to a car without CAN/MOST Bus using a so called CANBUS interface). It is no problem to install a "conventional" unit to a car equipped with a CAN/MOST Bus as long as you don't want to connect it to the CAN/MOST Bus because it is IMPOSSIBLE as you already said.
Again: let any local HiFi Shop with some experience do an ordinary install job, with ordinary wiring and ordinary speaker/amplifier install and you're set. Of course you can't use your BOSE/DSP system (if your car has one) anymore, you need everything new.
May I ask a stupid question: if you need a Navigation System, why don't you install the PCM2? If your car has a MOST Bus (and it apparently has), it is almost a plug'n play job.

Re: Can Traffic Pro be installed in '03 cars with MOST bus?

It's not a stupid question at all. I already have a Traffic Pro in my MY2000 car and kept the orginal radio that it came with. Therefore, I wanted to keep the traffic pro in the new car because I like it so much. The PCMII was never an option for me at 5000 Euros for a retrofit...
By the way, what functionalities would I loose by not not having a radio connected to the bus?

Re: Can Traffic Pro be installed in '03 cars with MOST bus?

The MOST bus is primarily used to communicate with other audio devices, including external amps, CD changers, and DSP equalizers. If you have any of these, the "conventional" headunit will not be able to use them.

The one unknown is how the alarm or immobilizer system will react when the MOST headunit is removed from the car. Logic would say that it will do something. Someone speculated that the car will not start but that seems like overkill. However, it would not be surprising if an alarm or alert is made.
