Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

"Auto Lies", one of the most reliable sources for new car info! Hopefully if the Cayenne does get the Phaeton V-10, it will come here? Hopefully Porsche will make mod's to the engine to make it more performance oriented?

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

Well, a high power version (estimated 330-340 HP) of the VW V10 would probably be a good idea because I don't think the Cayenne V6 was a good idea for the European market.
Itally needs a Diesel and most SUV owners in Europe (for Jeffrey: statistics ) usually prefer Diesel engines too.

A powerful Diesel engine would be nice but this doesn't eradicate the other "flaws".

BTW: a german car magazine mentions in it's latest edition that Porsche isn't happy with Cayenne sales. I'm not sure if they were referring to international or national (or both) sales.

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

There have been several reviews of the Touareg V-10 diesel and comments have been universally positive on the motor. It makes the Touareg very expensive, in the $70k range I think, but the performance has been impressive; very fast with tons of torque. I also understand the Touareg will get around 25 mpg with the V-10. Probably not enough to appease the Earth Liberation Front but maybe enough to get it off their top ten list.

Regarding Cayenne sales, Wiedeking says sales are so great they will have to expand the Leipzig facility to accommodate the increased production. I don't think we know what sales are really going to be yet. And we won't know for at least a year. After the V-6 has been out for a few months and all sales to the early adopters is over, then we might get a good picture of what ongoing sales will be like. It is still way too early.

Art of exaggeration is one of the traits of CEOs. You remember the ENRON was making a lot of money too

I hope the GOD that the Cayenne won't be a failure 'cuase that'll bring down Porsche for sure. I have a feeling that VW is lurking behind the bushes to find the opportunity to buy out Porsche.

    What do you all think?

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

What would be the point? They share the same major stockholders anyway. Already "all in the family" so to speak.

    Not quite right, Gary.
VW hasn't much to do with Porsche, especially since Piech left VW as CEO (he still works for VW). Oops, forgot: VW and Porsche have the Cayenne in common.

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

Right on GM Austin, it's way way to early for anyone to make a definite guess as to how sales are overall for the Cayenne. I think that some of us maybe allowing our distate for the Cayenne to cloud our vision of certain aspects for the Cayenne. Magazines will say anything just to get you interested in their magazine, and keep buying their issues. I think that it all comes down to the design of the Cayenne, if more people liked it, they would have more good things to say about it in all aspects. If people don't like somehting the chances are they are going to speak about it in a negative way. If we love Porsche so much, we should really love the Cayenne and encourage people to buy them!

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

I know for a fact the Touareg V10 TDI will be here in early 2004, even in California. 553ft-lb @ 2000 rpm while 23/28 city/highway mpg. I can't imagine Porsche dropping this engine in the Cayenne though. Has Porsche / VW shared engines ever? I think the 914 used a VW aircooled engine, correct?

    Your so bad!

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

Hah!!!!!!! I really think Porsche should stick the CGT's V-10 in the Cay's engine bay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! How bout them apples!!!!
Heck I'd buy it in a heart beat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Say Porsche did decide to use a diesel V-10 in the Cayenne, and they sold it here in the states I'd consider it?

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

I would prefer a better transmission instead diesels. the actual one is far away from mercedes transmissions standards
and sometimes badly slow with downshifting in the right moments. its easy to shift benz boxes with the pedal - not so the cayenne box.

I will agree with you about that. I am not yet convinced it is the transmission itself; it could be the mapping. There is a problem though.

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

I've testdriven the Touareg V10 Diesel a couple of times, and although I am somewhat impressed by the torque, I am not at all impressed by the engine's idle noise. Its very noisy when idle and although the harsh sound disappears when you start driving it, the thought of driving a car that sounds like a tractor at the traffic lights simply puts me off.

So if Porsche decides to launch a Cayenne Diesel I sure hope they add some more noise dampening materials.

In general VAG diesels are quite powerful but way to noisy compared to e.g. BMW diesel engines (both with the lid closed and open. The difference in noise levels between e.g. a BMW 530d and an Audi A6 2.5 V6 TDI is astounding.

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

Audi/VW Diesels are well known for their hard run and noise when theyre cold or running with low rpm`s. They normally sucks a lot of oil too when they are a lill older. Even big real truck diesels sounds smoother.

Thanks, I stick with the Zuffenhausen V8 and I`m happy with it.

Re: Cayenne to get Phaeton V-10 diesel?

I don't think it would make any sense for Porsche to go for a Cayenne diesel.

    A) Mr Wiedeking ruled it out once again at the Frankfurt Motor Show, saying with a diesel engine life stops at 4,000 rpm while it just started with a Porsche engine....

    B) Diesel is a European phenomenon. Almost no diesel engines are selling in North America (I'm not talking about heavy trucks nor full size pick-up trucks like the F-350 heavy duty....) nor in Japan. So why would Porsche try to offer a diesel version of the Cayenne for Europe only (approx 40% of sales) and jeopardize the image.... It doesn't make any sense at all.

    C) They would have to buy the engine from a third party and squeeze even more the margin.

    D) The Liepzig factory was originally designed to assemble 25,000 units per year. It seems at the current rate, over 25,000 Cayenne V8 will be made this year (fiscal) so the factory is already theoritically "saturated". They need to invest a bit for the V6 (5,000-6,000 units this fiscal year) so why would they want to increase the output even more with a diesel version?
