    GT3 exhaust sound

    When my car is stone cold, at first start up the exhaust sounds wicked, very loud. To me sounds awesome.
    But after the car has warmed up for about 2-3minutes at idle, like a switch, it quiets itself.
    Does anyone know what this is, or why this is?
    Someone on the rennlist forum also noticed this on there car.

    From my post on rennlist:

    I have 2K miles on my GT3 and have the same audible experiences as noted above. During warm-up, the fuel mixture is richer, as Viken says, the idle RPM is raised slightly and an auxilliary air pump is activated to help heat the cats. I speculate that all that rich burning and extra air is popping/burbling in the exhaust/cats and making that sound. As noted above, it quits completely when the air pump stops and the idle drops to normal. Transient hydraulic lifter clatter after a long period of inactivity is different, but entirely possible on a flat engine too.

    Lynn Wilson had a 2004 GT3 at Summit Point last weekend. The car was bone stock, he didn't even change the roll bar settings. He ran on MPSC tires and was turning laps in the 1:22 range. As a comparison, the pole for the GT3 Cup cars on slicks was a 1:17.5.

    Are you sure it was running on the Michelin Cup tyres?
    I spoke with a Michelin representative this weekend and he told me that the new GT3's sizes will be available end of this year or beg. 2004.

    Yes, Lynn is running 225 and 285 Pilot Sport cup's on his GT3 at the track.

    Yes, Track Time...

    Yes, It's been to the track at 300 miles just for parade laps at our local PCA Club Race at Pueblo..... then for a day at 2nd Creek Reaceway with 1000 miles on it and still bone stock on MPS2s. I wasn't really pushing it, just getting the feel of it with passengers on a non-timed set of runs with a lot of traffic. One clear lap was 2 sec off my best in my old 944T with a full track set-up. Now with 2100 miles on it I will take to a real DE at 2nd Creek this weekend. Last week I drove it about 880 miles through the fall colors and over 11 & 12K ft passes in the Colorado Rockies..... "on business". Pretty darned amazing vehicle. Don't let anyone tell you that a GT3 is too hardcore for Roadtrips!

    RR4, when your exhaust is cold the piping has room to jiggle around and do funny things to the exhaust tone. Once the exhuast heats up, the metal expands and everything tightens up.
