got the 987s for few days !! and smoke the m3!!!

due to my 996 c4s has to change the gear box! so porsche dealer gave me a 987 boxster s for a few days ! first impression of the boxster S is very sleaky ,easy to handle and more user friendly compare to my c4s.a

the time has come!there was a bmw m3 in front of me try to attract my attention by doing some dangerous driving (cut right to the Van and stop at the round about ) , then i went right behind him and over take him before the next round about ,then i saw there are no on coming traffic so i didnt slow down and that m3 already cant catch up with me !
i think this is kinda stupid for that Bmw M3 driver to challenge the boxster on bendly area like lots of traffic circle , after i go back to the shopping mall to pick up my wife! wowow i can smell a lot of burning rubber!!

anyway after this, i will consider of changing my c4s cayman S or ferrari 360 .

mid engine cars Rocks!!!! that guy on the M3 also gave a thumb up!

Mmmm. Bazza, the middle digit is called a finger, not a thumb.

Re: got the 987s for few days !! and smoke the m3!!!

na! i think he mean enjoy the challenge!

Re: got the 987s for few days !! and smoke the m3!!!

A little advice before you're jumping on the mid engine car thing: drive the Boxster S at the limit and we'll talk again. I had some hard times keeping my wife's Boxster S on the street and avoiding doing a 360* slide for a few times. Just turn on sport chrono (a MUST on the Boxster S), turn PSM off and then...I hope you have a good insurance or adequate driving skills. The 997 is much more forgiving and therefore faster in the hands of an amateur driver. But what do I know...

RC what you are trying to say you can be summed up in two words: Snap Oversteer!

Once a mid engine car starts going its gone unless u catch it in the first microsecond!

911's you can play like a violin with your right foot.

    True to some extend.
The few times I have tracked my car it just seems very composed and with a wider margin before "snapping" compared to the 911s I have been following.
Of course I have no way of knowing if it was the skills of the 911-drivers or my car that made it easy for me to follow them around the track with 100-120BHP less under the hood (996s and GT3).
But I do recall spinning the car 5 seconds after switching off PSM the first time

Re: got the 987s for few days !! and smoke the m3!!!

Gotta agree with Dr P there, when I did my track day I was also able to keep up with 911's with much more horses under the bonnet... Obviously not on the straights but was able to make up ground in the twisties... The amount of speed I could carry into the corner was amazing where as the 911 is more of a slow in fast out kind of car

Also spun mine as well when the PSM was switched off, although I was trying to powerslide it. Agree that it does snap but you do get plenty of warning before hand!

And isnt it only the recent generation of 911's that have been so easy to slide??? Werent the 911's of 80's and early 90's quite notorious for chucking people of the road!!!!!

    Whatever, M3 killing is fun!

Re: got the 987s for few days !! and smoke the m3!!!

yea! but you have to change your types very often!? i also can drift on my c4s but the boxster are 10 times better on that , is like on art form!

hope things are improved after the gearbox change!

Re: got the 987s for few days !! and smoke the m3!!!

Mid engined cars are great in the hands of race drivers. But that low polar moment of inertia can bite you.

I agree with RC, a mid-engined car will spin like a top if provoked (like the figure skater spinning faster as he/she moves arms closer to the body - lower polar moment of inertia).

The most forgiving layouts are those transaxle cars (944 et al) that have equal portions of weight hung out from both sides of the car's central vertical axis.

However, if you are on top of it, nothing will have the turn-in or reflexes of a mid-engine layout, other factors being the same ...

Re: got the 987s for few days !! and smoke the m3!!!

It takes a long time to develop the skill and appropriate reflexes for driving the 911 at (or over) the limit. It took me years (and many track days) to have my first reaction to a drift be the correct one in a 911. It's one thing to know intellectually that you cannot lift or brake and need to ease into the gas. It's quite another thing to actually DO IT instictively with oncoming traffic.

Once these skills are learned and honed, nothing else is quite as satisfying.

BTW, I never learned these skills with my 996, since the PSM really isolated you from the true dynamics of the car and I wasn't brave enough to turn it off, except on rare occasions. The 993 is a great way to learn it (forgiving but still connected) and the older 911's are great fun to improve the skills (less forgiving to learn with)!

Now, I've never owned a mid-engined car (but driven a Boxster briefly) and I imagine it could be lots of fun too, once one learns its traits. Maybe a Cayman RS someday
