Sorry. This is the last thing, but, America? Advocate of free trade? ROFL! A little below the belt perhaps, considering that the EU probably isn't exactly saintly either!

Re: Jeremyn Clarkson slammed with pie in face by enviromenta

I definitely agree with you regarding the media!

Very often they're too busy making news, rather than just reporting it! IMHO, anything that can make our President look bad and or make the liberals look good.

This is an interest (amateur) of mine (I am not a meteorologist by training, I'm just a physician), and, yes, anthropogenic-global warming (AGW) advocates cite Katrina as evidence of that phenomenon. But Katrina is not the most powerful Atlantic Basin hurricane on record to hit the US-the great Labor Day (September) storm of 1935 with a central pressure of 892mB was (Katrina got down to 902, I believe). The explanation for the recent spate of big storms I find cogent is the well-known cyclical Atlantic Ocean thermal oscillation (we are now supposedly in positive thermal flux-the surface water temp. fluctuates in a 20-30 year cycle, it was relatively cooler in the 1940's-50's, was warmer in the 20's-30's, and is warmer again in the 90's-00's). The debate is whether global warming is aggravating this cycle (making it warmer now more than expected). AGW advocates say yes. I'll leave it at that.

BTW, my view is that whether or not AGW (not in an isolated and minor manner but in a dramatic and cataclysmic manner) exists, the primary force for replacing burning of fossil fuels (FF) with alternative technologies will not be political means, but the market (when the price of a barrel of oil is consistently > $100, this will encourage the more expensive non-FF technologies to develop competitively). Eventually, our Porsche's will be fueled by an as of yet undeveloped energy source.

They seem to be more frequent too Doc. Any ideas on why?

Re: Jeremyn Clarkson slammed with pie in face by enviromenta

    LPM,

There has been media discussion re. whether increased numbers of hurricanes around the world are evidence of AGW. At least in the US, NOAA (US national weather bureau) data show that hurricane strikes on US shores from Atlantic Basin hurricanes have not increased in frequency and intensity from data from 1850:

    US Strikes per decade:
    Decade:All strengths/Cat.3,4 or 5
    1851-60:19/6
    1861-70:15/1
    1871-80:20/7
    1881-90:22/5
    1891-00:21/8
    1901-10:18/4
    1911-20:21/7
    1921-30:13/5
    1931-40:19/8
    1941-50:24/10
    1951-60:17/8
    1961-70:14/6
    1971-80:12/4
    1981-90:15/5
    1991-00:14/5
    2001-04(4 yr.):9/3
    Average/decade:17.7/6.0

Last year and this year have been lively down near your heighborhood, LPM ( ), but otherwise not more so vs. the last 150 years over the last 20-30 years here in the Atlantic. There is evidence for greater activity in the other oceans in the last 35 years, the question is whether this is related to CO2 emissions and sea surface warming or other phenomena out of human control. Any other meteorology buffs with comments?

Re: Jeremyn Clarkson slammed with pie in face by enviromenta

    Thank you Al!

Correct me if I'm wrong- but the mid to late 19th century were among the most active decades...oh that figures, Lincoln was President (another Republican) during part of that time.

Didn't Al Gore give a speech on global warming a few years ago during one of the coldest days in decades.

The NOAA data indeed suggests that the late 1800's were volatile. And the last 2 seasons also have been tough for Gulf Coast residents.

As an aside, I note that the official Porsche (996) Turbo S Coupe and Cabriolet brochure emphasizes the benefits to the environment of the turbocharged engine (it "recycles" engine exhaust ). Of course, the way I drive my TT, the horrendous fuel economy that I average when mashing the throttle probably mitigates that effect.
