This is one of my biggest fears since I do lots of highspeed highway driving, I have encountered objects before too but with less damage. The best thing if at high speed is not to try to avoid them and hang on, unless you can really trust you can avoid it, otherwise you may loose control of the car in the attempt and the accident be much more severe, and happens frecuently. You did the right thing.
Hope for a speedy recovery of your 997 and back on the road!

Wow pentium, what a horrific crash to your P-car. Glad you're okay, and did not lose control when you hit the tire. I'm sure the pictures do not show the full ugliness of the accident in person, especially if you're the owner.
Oh wells, engine isn't damage. and the parts are all replaceable.

Very upsetting. Hope your car gets better soon.
The tire looks like it might be a re-tred. Often 18 wheelers will only replace the treds because they wear out faster then the entire tire. These re-treds will often become un-glued and fly off the tires.
Could be something else too like a blow-out. Just last month a guys tire blew out and came off his car about 100 yards in front of me. It was dark but I heard the pop and then saw the tire rolling off the side of the road. Luckily it rolled to the side and I was able to swerve to avoid it.

good new that you are alright! What country have you been travelling in?
I try to avoid going very fast at night as well, there have been too many bad stories about people unable to see debris, trucks or hazards on the road soon enough to stop. Especially travelling with the lights on low beam provides you with too little illumination to stop in appropriate distances.
Have you been able to figure who it was? Usually th epolice should have found the driver, shouldn't they?

Driving very fast at night is like "roulette russe" : interesting and scary, but with this difference : it's dangerous too for other people on the road, sometimes driving without functionning lights ...
Fortunately you're safe and there's no victims, it could have been worse.

[censored] its really sad. looks like my color, and i feel you man.
its really sad, wish you could find the stupid guy who left it there, if it was a motocycle the rider could of be dead.
I hope everything goes alright with your repairs, try to add something extra, some carbon or aftermarket front bumper, to make you self more happy..
