german magazine "der spiegel" is the origin of this rumour, however VW did not comment on it yet.

uk magazine "autocar" stated in one of their last issues that the official car presentation/launch press conference was cancelled. they received the cancellation info just one day or so before the actual date.

I couldn't get the Spiegel link to work but here is confirmation from Motor Trend:

the spiegel link does not work because UBBthreads interprets commas not valid for links. spiegel.de uses vignette storyserver which does create URLs with commas, though. if you really want to see the page (it's german anyway) you have to copy the URL into your browser's address field.
regarding the veyron delay: today's automotorsport magazine says that VW CEO pischetsrieder himself did a test drive of the veyron and afterwards decided that the car is not ready for a release, mainly due to problems with the chassis. that led to the dismissal of the bugatti boss.

Thanks for the tip. I thought I had tried that but it works now. 
The German is no problem. My German is "sehr schlecht" so I plug the URL into Google's Translate function and get an intelligible result. Not much more there than what you have already said.

I wonder if he really drives that good or only thinks so...
