    Z4 to compete with the upcoming Porsche Cayman

    BMW to build Z4 Coupe

    BMW Z4 CoupeRemember that strange-looking little car known as the Z3 Coupe? Well, BMW waited about three years and now it appears to be ready to bring it back to life. At the Frankfurt auto show next month, BMW will show a concept version of the Z4 coupe with the intention to start selling them next summer. Based on the picture we've seen, the Z4 coupe is slightly better-looking than its predecessor - but that's not really saying much. And by the way, BMW is planning to have the Z4 to compete with the upcoming Porsche Cayman...good luck, boys.

    I owned several BMWs, but I cannot embrace the new generation of Bangled Bimmers. I have never considered BMW and Porsche to be competitors, with no disrespect to BMW.

    Uuuuugly!

    One thing they do have going for it though....engines. They will probably put the current M3 engine in it and later a small V8. It will probably end up like most hi-perf bimmers.....fast, but pretty rough around the edges with the Cayman being good at everything.

    I saw another piccie of this in one of the weekly mags a while back - actually thought it looked pretty good, definitely beeter than the soft top - be an interesting comparison when they arrive...

    The Z4M with 400bhp V8 (if it gets that) will probably eat the Cayman for breakfast... but the Cayman might just get away on the corners!

    Actually, it will be in the 450hp range, according to most recent info. However, this is not going to happen for a few years. First, the Z4M will get the current M3 motor 333hp I-6, then the 450hp V8 from the E90M3 after a few years...

And really, with 333HP its pretty well stoked to take on most anything from Porsche short of a 911.

    Don't recall but I think the 360HP version can't be certified for US emissions.....true or false?

    That's a real shame for you US ppl not to get the M3 CSL. The engine (and car) is a real corker! However it is priced between a 997 and 997 S here, so I know which I rather get.

    Actually the Z4M is supposed to get the old M5 8-cyl 400 hp engine

    ...and as a matter of fact the Z3M already had the E46 6-cyl 343 hp engine, but due to shorter exhaust system it "only" produced 321 hp (in Europe, don't know the figure for US). Therefore I doubt the Z4M would be powered by the same engine.

    The Z3M had one year with the S54 and was rated at 315hp in the US. In the US, the E46 M3 has 333hp...
