    CGT help?

Can anyone tell me the distance from the front of the car to the base of the windshield please? I've got to design (quickly) my structural support (am building/renovating the house now) for a garage lift around the CGT height wise.

    Re: CGT help?

Let me go out to my GT in the garage and I'll measure it for you

    Ok, I'll wake up now...

    Re: CGT help?

For that kind of measurements you probably need to contact Porsche directly.

    Re: CGT help?

lol, pcna is about as helpful re: getting information on the CGT as well as customer appreciation days as BMWNA would probably be! lost cause those people!

i really need the distance from the front of the car to the beginning of the front tire as well as the front of the car to the base of the windshield. you'd think pcna people might actually get up off their arses and call some one for me, but no such luck. of course, what kind of service should i expect on this economy car anyway, right?

    Re: CGT help?

How precise do you need these measurements to be?
If not very precise, you could just take a side picture of the CGT, and measure:)
Of course, i suppose that the total length of the CGT is known..

    Re: CGT help?

how about get a model car (1:18 or 1:43) & start from there.

    Re: CGT help?

thanks for the scale ideas. i've kinda considered that. i guess i don't need to be precise, but the closer to exact i can get the better. length of the CGT is 182", right? doing a rough scale off the official side angle pictures in the carrera gt order book (silver thing in a box), it looks like appx 25" to front of the car to front of the wheel and 55" from front of the car to base of windshield. any architect types out there come up with similar numbers? tia

    Re: CGT help?

turns out the appx 55" from front to windshield is indeed a crucial measurement as 55" is very close to trouble for my setup. so, if anyone gets ahold of this measurement, i would surely appreciate it. the other one, front to front of tire, isn't as big a deal.

    Re: CGT help?

I've measured it on 2 pictures from the official brochure, and I'd say:
    - front to base of windshield: 1300 mm -> 51.2 inches
    - front to front of tire: 570 mm -> 22.5 inches

    Re: CGT help?

thanks pierre. 51.2 would be a problem as the top of the windshield (the highest part of the car) would hit exactly at the lowest part of my pitched garage ceiling which is oh so close to the total hieight of a 996 and CGT :-( what are your guesses for the measurement from the back of the car to the high part of the passenger cabin for backing in instead? it actually looks quite a bit longer - say 1/2" on the picture. i get 9 1/4" for the picture against an actual 182" length for a 1/4" inch = 5" scale. the front of the car to the base of the is appx 2 3/4" or 55" while the back of the car to the cabin area is more like 3 1/4" or 65". the former would be close while the latter would be real doable. tia

ps. what i mean by "base of windshield" is the lowest part which conicides with the start of the windshield where it meets the hood (wiper area).

    Re: CGT help?

ben, have a look at this picture. The sizes I took as references are in red, the extrapolated ones are in yellow (hard to read, huh?). The wheelbase and height measurements are in sync, but strangely, the total length does not match exactly. Anyway, I hope this approximation isn't too bad.

I wouldn't count on Porsche to give more details, but maybe you should try to contact them anyway...

    Re: CGT help?

    thanks!

    Re: CGT help?

huh... This issue with the lenghts that didn't match bothered me quite a bit. So I did the exercise again, but with a schematic(?) diagramm of the GT. Now everything seems to match quite well!

    Re: CGT help?

    Waoh!!! Very cool diagram Pierre!
    Magnifique! You're an engineer?
Did you use Autocad to do this?
    Fanch.

    Re: CGT help?

    Yeah, I'm an engineer, but a software-engineer...
This diagramm is not my work! I just found it on the Internet, and added my guesstimations of the various lengths based on the official numbers (overall length and wheelbase).

    thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You mean PCNA actually knows what a Carrera GT is? WOW, they are improving

    Re: CGT help?

i'm such a wussy. car is changable option/color wise til 2/04, but had to spec it today to get sign up for the customer/exhibition deal at Leipzig wherein you ride in a CGT with the factory driver and then get to drive a GT3 or TT around the track. the wussy part is i choose GT silver (with dark grey interior, stereo, and A/C) even though i really like seal grey thinking that if i ever sell the car it would do much better with GT silver than SG. pretty stupid, eh? i mean it sure seems dumb to put out this kind of dough for a car like this and settle for a color based on future resale considerations.

    Re: CGT help?

    Ben-

Even though you may have comprimised...the good thing (and i think the cool thing) is that your car will be CLASSIC. something no one could say for yellow or red! Light silver dark interior...lets the world know you are driving something german, and something porsche.

And hell, anyone can get a porsche in seal grey, right? wont be many gt silvers out there....

    -Matt
p.s. Remind yourself that despite the color...its still a CGT.

    Re: CGT help?

"And hell, anyone can get a porsche in seal grey, right? wont be many gt silvers out there..."

yeah, but now they're rolling out the 40th anniversary 996 in GT silver only - for which i don't get the justification.

    Re: CGT help?

Lots of guys wish they had that problem.

    Re: CGT help?

    Don't worry Ben, it's a good choice.
I would have gone for GT silver like you or black but probably GT silver in the end because a beautiful sport car like that you want it to stand out!
As for being the same color of the future 911 (40th bday) I don't think it's a big problem, firstly bc they won't be many of them and secondly bc it's "only" a 911
    Congrats again!
    Fanch.
PS: Good choice about the A/C and Radio too! IMHO.
