Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

Are you guys happy with your 3.8 and 355hp? Dont you wish it would have more hp? Or you are fine with what you have?

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

I have no complaints. I'll never use what I have. Although I wouldn't mind a turbo if I had the $$$$!

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

vladimir ! do u mean by compare to other competitor!? a bit weak!?

that is what i think about the new porsche model 400+bhp for the basic model wourld be nice

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

well, for a $100k+ car, a little bit more hp would have been nice on paper. Considering its a redesigned 911, they should have increased the hp from the previous generation a bit more.

Corvette has more hp. No doubt, the new M3 coming out will be close to 400hp. Its kind of sad how the boxster, cayman s and 911 are separted only by 20-30 hp

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

For a long time, I felt that the power was lacking for the Boxster and 911, but the more DEs I've done, the less I see power as an issue. Sure, I want more power. It's nice for bragging rights and to be able to dust off just about anything without trying, but the lack of major horsepower doesn't seriously impede my driving enjoyment (though it may impact my bragging enjoyment).

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

A 997 is about a complete sportscar package. If all roads were straight lines with unlimited speeds, then measuring cars by HP would be completely relevant. Torque gets you from zero to sixty and there have been "claims" of sub 4 second 0-60 times. This car excels in the real world, not on paper.

I never consider Corvette in the same class as Porsche therefore if it had 500 HP it wouldn't bother me.

The M3 is a different car,handling-, performance-, and purpose-wise from a Carrera so it can have 400 HP and not bother me.

What DOES bother me about the new M3 is that it will be sooooo ugly that I won't be able to buy one because of the nausea onset everytime I look at it.

The important point to me of HP in a 911 vs. the rest of the sports car world is that for low-end acceleration, the rear-engined 911 means more weight sits over the rear wheels, decreasing friction (and consequently traction) loss and thus increasing the car's ability to accelerate from 0 to whatever faster vs. other cars with even more HP and torque (since the front-engine or even mid-engine layout of many other cars promotes wheel spin at launch).

Not that I don't want more HP, far from it, but I'm amazed how the 997S and 996TSCab (test drove the former, own the latter) drive faster than do other cars with even more ponies.

I also believe that Porsche is trying to niche-market the Cayman to 911-buyer wannabe's who want to "move up" from their Boxsters, but are deterred by the 911 sales prices (thus the intro. Cayman will be both faster and more expensive than the Boxster as opposed to most other "coupe/convertible" siblings in which the convertible is usually the more expensive of the two), with the analysis that a hardtop "Boxster" (Cayman)of merely equal power and performance to a Boxster (convertible roadster) would not sell as well if powered and priced lower than the Boxster.

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

    Vladmir,

I'm very upset now since the powerkit (which includes PSE) has been announced. I don't think current owners will receive any sort of special deals from Porsche (I'm not even sure X51 can be retrofitted).

Additionally, I have no doubt in my mind Porsche doesn't give a damn about first year 997 customers missing out on options.

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

    I agree with jlr.

Often the desire for more horsepower is tempting until you find your own personal deficiencies at the race track. A veteran or pro driver will pass you with ease and 50hp less.

But I admit more power can be fun, even if you cannot fully utilize it.

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

    I'll be fine with 355hp until a 07?, 08? Carrera has 400HP.

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

The 355 is just a number on a piece of paper. In the real world, the 997S performs basically toe-to-toe with the 400 h.p. Corvette in straight-line acceleration. And they also are very close on terminal speed. This has to do with what was previously detailed, engine layout, precision engineering, all adding up to more horsepower making it to the rear wheels and less rolling resistance as speed climbs. I also think that Porsche "sand-bags" their power figures a bit, because honestly, a 355 horsepower 3,300-3,400 lb car running mid-twelves in the 1/4 mile???? I don't care if they say it has 150 h.p., the real-world test results for the 997S are SMOKING!! The driving experience is also more satisfying than the higher-power-on-paper Corvette, because the power delivery of the flat-6 is more elastic and goes on forever in the rev band. I'm a muscle car owner, and power fanatic, and I get more of a power rush from my 997S than I do when I test drive Corvettes.

So, in short, screw the horsepower figure, look at the stopwatch, and then take a drive for yourself. You'll find that the 997S OVER-DELIVERS on its paper promises.

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

New M3 said to have 413 hp.

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

Remember, horsepower is only fun for a daily commuter when it's readily available to play across the powerband. Beware high-rpm screamers that have no low cajones. Take a drive in a Honda S2000 to see what I mean. It's a snore, unless you keep the revs up like a turbine. All these high horsepower figures are fun to drool at, but wait to see what they really drive like in normal situations.

69bossnine, the more I read your posts, the more I enjoy your contribution on this forum.

I am truly impressed by your kowledge and by how clever your words are.

Re: Are you satisfied with the power of your 997s?

I would have liked the S to have atleast 380hp as stock and not be offered as a powerkit! Although I am totally blown off with the handling and general feel of the 997 S! It is an amazing car period with or without that extra hp! I own a 800hp supra for my power kicks!

    What he said!

If you're on the track 355 is good.

If you're on the public roads 355 is morethan sufficient, it's almost insane.

If you want more there's the GT3 and CGT.

Guys, that's enough! If you keep this up, his head will swell so big they'll need to widen the doorway so he can leave the building.
