Re: New 997 Turbo Spy Video.

If it's going to be introduced in September, it won't be long before we get to see the real thing!

I remember when I asked on this forum a while back whether the 997T would be presented at Frankfurt, and the sentiment was NO, not likely until spring. Any corroborating rumors to the Edmunds talk of a September unveiling? RC? Carlos? Any other European/German-based rennteamers or others?

Edmunds also pegs the 997T base HP at 460-480. This is a tad lower than the 480-490 #'s bandied about. While only a subtle difference, it does bespeak the nature of the turbo "update" from the 996, so if there is only a subtle HP/torque difference in factory specs from the 996 to 997, then doesn't this imply that the powerplant changes will be as minimal as the cosmetic changes are now rumored (?feared) to be from 996 to 997?

They also talk of 0-60 times "less than 4 seconds." Heck, I'm convinced my new 996TSCab does that, even though it's still being "broken in." OK, occasionally I rev it to 6,000rpm's, but if the digital speedo readout is accurate, I've gotta be around 4-flat if not sub-4. I'll need to time it with a stopwatch though to be sure.

So looking on the bright side, for those who have not had the opportunity to drive a 996T/TS for just a day, the 996T/TS is an awesome car. Not that I'm not hoping for a big power boost and some significant cosmetic changes for the 997T (I'd love to see 500+ HP and those "new slim intercooler intakes" on the 997T that Edmunds mentions in their column, but I'm afraid those might be only test mule camo. mods that will be removed so that the intakes will be 996-esque as I believe RC alluded to). But even if only subtle changes in power and performance for the 997T seem uninspiring vs. the 996T, with the 997 Carrera suspension/handling/ergonomics/interior design improvements vs. the 996C's, the 997T should still be a great car.

Re: New 997 Turbo Spy Video.

I hope something interesting will be shown in September and I hope it's not just a sedan. To echo your last statement Al, while it's true that there may not be anything to inspire awe and shock from the 997 Turbo on paper, I bet it will be a revelation to drive.

I agree! One of the upgrades mentioned is the use of variable vane turbo chargers (where the impeller pitch is adjustable inside the turbo). This should really reduce turbo lag even further. The AWD system is due to be vastly improved as well as the DSG tranny system (I'd still get a manual, but it's much better than Tip).

    Grant,

Do you know much about the variable vane turbo and adjustable impeller pitch concepts? Is it possible to rig a car with a control button for the driver to electronically adjust impeller pitch, say, for low-end torque for stoplight drag racing, and broader torque profiles for sustained, higher speed driving? And perhaps another electronic control button to direct the amount of front- and rear-axle power output for the AWD, rather than a computer-controlled version as in the case of the 996T AWD? I think Subaru does the same with their AWD. It could be called "PTIM" (Porsche Turbo Impeller Management) and "PDM" (Porsche Drivetrain Management), or maybe just "PDQ" (in this case Porsche Damn Quick ). It would of course add more buttons to the dashboard, but that would be OK by me. Just get rid of the cruise control garbage from the extra stalk on the steering column.

Even with only a modest HP gain on the 997T vs. the 996T, such technical innovations could make for a cool car.

Al - The whole purpose of the variable vane turbos is that they automatically adjust the pitch of the impellers (not sure if it's electronic or mechanical), so that they spool quickly from rest and make maximum boost consistently from any engine speed. It should be better for all of your scenarios above - no downside or compromise except for greater complexity and potential breakage. There's no need for any button on the dash. You just press your right foot down and it does the rest...

Re: New 997 Turbo Spy Video.

Actually, I think I was a bit confused about one point. I think the variable vane refers to the variable diameter nozzle that feeds the turbocharger from the exhaust gasses. This is what changes, not the impeller blades' pitch. It provides the same advantage without adding mass and weakness to the rapidly rotating pieces. The vane is narrow for faster air flow when accelerating from rest (makes the turbo spool faster). Then, once the tubo is spinning fast, the vane opens wider to allow more air flow volume (at reduced speed) to make maximum power. The vane is continuously variable according to engine load and rpm. Pretty cool idea!

The word is that the Cayman and C4S and C4 are going to be formally inroduced in Frankfurt this September.... :-(
