    Cayman RS or Cayman CS?

We have heard a lot about a light weight Cayman. However, would you prefer a CS or a RS? Judging from the past, CS would be a light weight version of the Cayman, lowered and striped of equipment such as air, radio etc. The RS would be a higher powered and lighter weight Cayman, like a GT3 RS. The CS will likely to be cheaper than a standard Cayman, but the RS would be more expensive than the standard car. So the question is, which would you prefer?

Re: Cayman RS or Cayman CS?

RS versions are only more powerful since the 996 generation, in the past, they were just lighter more focused version of the normal model.
According to your definitions, I'd like an RS of course, more power and lighter, but either way, both will be more expensive than the Cayman S 100%, even without power gain and no aircon, etc etc etc.
    Less is more!

Oh really? I thought RS were always more powerful. Guess I am too young to know. As for the price, 968 CS was cheaper than the standard car, so I am assuming the Cayman CS would be a cheaper car.

Re: Cayman RS or Cayman CS?

Wasn't the first RS, the 1972 2.7 RS more powerful (as well as lighter) than the most powerful 911 which had 190HP, I belive the 2.7RS had 210HP

BTW, as a side note, I just learnt a few days back that Porsche rolled out that same year, 1972 a 911 2.5 ST with a production of ONLY 7 cars! it was for GT races and had a 2.5L with 270HP and 970Kg kerb weight! worth a lot of money nowadays to say the least

Re: Cayman RS or Cayman CS?

Carlos, you are right. The 73 RS was more powerful because it had a twin plug 2.8 motor, twin plug distributer, more aggressive cams and exhaust.

The 72 911 ST is rare, but maybe the rarer yet were the five 914s built with flat 8 motors. One was given to Ferry as a birthday gift, one went to Piech, two more went to other family members and the fifth one was turned into a mini fire truck for track use.

The 964 series RS also had more hp for ROW, except for the US market where Porsche didnt bother to spend $$$ to certify the higher output engine, but did include some spicey RS decals with each RS America.

Re: Cayman RS or Cayman CS?

Ok my nad guys, RS were more powerful since the beginning then, I thought the 964 RS has the same power as a Carrera 2!

Re: Cayman RS or Cayman CS?

Assuming that Porsche follows my definition, which would you prefer Carlos? We could be helping Porsche do a market research here.

Just realised that I haven't said which I prefer yet. I think I would like a cheaper than Cayman S version, hence the CS. As a track car, I would not want something that cost as much as a 911. I find it hard to justify a more expensive Cayman if it is just a stripped out version with more focussed suspension. Afterall, anyone can do that themselves right?

Re: Cayman RS or Cayman CS?

I would take the RS, though of course depends on the price, etc. but I think that such a Cayman version would not only need the lightweight treatment to improve handling and improve power-to-weight ratio but would also need a new dry-sump engine and with more power since I don't think they can lighten the 987 tremendously, and at higher speeds such as the ring the total HP also counts, and 295HP just ain't enough for what I think the car should at be performance wise.
What I mean that with 295HP its tremendous potential is handicapped vs other cars. Depends how much they would charge but, I think that such a car with the current wet-sump and 295HP would be a shame.

Jim - You're thinking of the 73 RSR 2.8 (fantastic). That was a 308hp High-Butterfly MFI, high compression twin-plug motor to go with its very light weight and huge 9 & 11" wide wheels and 917 brakes. This car was built for racing, but there were some made to be registered on the street as well.

The 73RS was a 2.7L version of the 2.4S MFI motor (single plug) and made 210hp and alot more torque to go with its lighter weight (made in Touring and Lightweight versions). The 72/73 911S 2.4 made 190hp as Carlos said.

The 964RS had 260hp, while the C2 had 250hp. The difference is blueprinting and balancing the same motors. They were lighter, lower and much more single-purpose than the C2.

Re: Cayman RS or Cayman CS?

The 964 RS was not available in the U.S.....the U.S.964 RS America had the same HP as the 964C2.

I agree - since Fanch is writing from across the pond about the 964RS, I just assumed me meant the ROW version, not RSA...
