    OT: My new track car

Well, I just bought a sweet new track car (street legal) to replaced my burned 951S. It weighs 1,890 lbs based on a 73T with a 73RS motor (2.7L magnesium with MFI, racing headers, 9.5:1 CR and 240hp with 8,000 rpm redline). All racing Bilstein coilovers (no torsion bars) Charlie sway bars, etc. Engine and tranny are visible from inside car (through lexan window). Only glass is windshield (rest is Lexan). Here are a few photos:

Re: OT: My new track car

    Very, Very, Very nice

I'm slowly building a street legal race car as well out of my 930. I'm pulling sound pads out, removing rear seats and putting in a 993 3.6 liter twin turbo (600 hp).

Re: OT: My new track car

Wow - be careful in that thing! 600hp and 2,500 lbs would be pretty scary (is that about where the weight will land?)

Re: OT: My new track car

    Oh boy, Grant...great choice.

I wish I could hear the engine.

Re: OT: My new track car

RC - If you're ever in Denver, you can definitely hear the engine. With only a lexan window between driver and engine, you can hear it very easily (sounds unbelievable at 8,000 rpm)

2500 pounds would be great, but I don't know how long it will take me to get it down to that, if ever. I'm not really too concerned with weight because I will just keep finding ways to make the car lighter, I don't need to do it all now. I'm going to concentrate more on learning to drive it. The new motor isn't even in, but I'd guess the car would be at about 2800 pounds if it was, maybe less because I have a fiber glass front bumper and rear decklid, carbon fiber rear bumper, lighter recaro seats, removed engine sound pad and soon to be removed rear seats. AC and sunroof will be hard to say goodbye to, but will probably eventually go, along with their 100+ pounds. I really like my stereo though...

600 hp will be fun, but I also find the high revving normally aspirated flat sixes to be some of the most responsive and best sounding power plants around. The Carrera RS is a legend and those early MFI motors are wonderful.

Re: OT: My new track car

Keith - that's going to be a serious hot-rod! How much boost do you need to run to get 600hp?

    very nice!!!

    That's a huge fuel cell....

How they did they make as street legal? How many track miles on that car?

    Re: very nice!!!

William - that's only an 11 gallon fuel cell. It's only been on the track for 1/2 of one day (it rained). In the US, it's easy to make an old car street legal. It has 5,000 miles since restoration/building (fresh everything - engine, tranny, suspension, etc.). I'll never need to pass emissions again (collector plates - over 25yrs old) and there's no inspection in Colorado.

    lucky you

With so much work and modification, only half a day of track usage? great find!

Whenever you are bored with it, I will be very happy to take it out of your hand As I have a project to turn my Mini Cooper into a race car also, but the engine is a bit weak.

My engine builder claims only one bar! Power is made through that small jump in boost, better engine management and some other tricks. I trust my builder though, he's a national tech advisor for the PCA now. But I can't wait till I get the thing tuned right and on a dyno.

1.0 bar boost on the 993 Turbo engine and as a result 600 HP?
    Sounds weird.
I'm afraid your engine builder uses pretty "large" turbo chargers to increase power but I'm not sure if you'll like such a setup.
To get real 600 HP out of the 993 Turbo engine, it needs a lot of modifications.
We're talking about big money if you want quality too.

Re: OT: My new track car

He's quality and has gotten a huge following in the states in the past few years. I've never met one unsatisfied customer, though I've talked to many happy ones who have used independent dynos. I've seen the dyno sheets myself of some of his cars. They are not peaky and spool up early. He takes an incredible amount of pride in his work and if I don't see at least 500 hp at the rear wheels (due to driveline loss), he'll know about it, and I bet he'll do something about it (he's offered to fly across the country to help out with somethings). It's a motor built from the ground up from a standard 933 motor (new pistons and cylinders for starters). The turbos are the standard GT2 units, K24s. I'll keep you posted as things develop, but I'm confident.

Can't wait to hear about the results (maybe some pics too? ). I love such projects, I wish I had the time (and money) to be able to do that too.

Re: OT: My new track car

    grant,
what seats are those? thanks, regards, watt

Re: OT: My new track car

    RC,

It is possible, but it would require larger intake and throttle body, some proper head work, and a proper exhaust.

Re: OT: My new track car

    watt,

They look like they might be Momo Nascar seats. Here's the page that makes me think that:

Right but he didn't tell me that in his first post, so I thought his mechanic gets 600 HP out of a 993 Turbo engine with some ECU mods only.

Re: OT: My new track car

    They're Momo 1000 Lakes seats...

I apologize for the misunderstanding, it's more than that. I will post pictures, but many kinks have come into the plan over the months (mostly having to do with shipping and tracking down the parts to adapt it to the 1979 chassis), so I want to get it running before I tell the story. However, when it's down I'll give a full report. Maybe I'll get someone to host some videos after I track the car. Does anyone know anything about putting 993 GT-2 suspensions on earlier cars? <img src="http://www.rennteam.com/w3timages/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

Grant, sorry I didn't mean to steal your post, and I hope you don't see it that way. The more I look at your car, the more special I see it is. Also, it's pretty famous, I have seen people posting about the "carbon fiber" 911 other boards as well. It must be an absolute joy to drive with such little weight to separate you from the experience.

Re: OT: My new track car

No problem, Keith - your car sounds awesome too...
