Boxer vs. in-line engine...
well, given that i am a porsche and bmw owner i feel kind of qualified and compelled to write on this topic..
except that this here is not on bmw vs porsche but bmw vs bmw!!
yes, they too build glorious boxer engines, thats in their bikes! so sorry, I'm going slighly off topic...
this weekend in swapped my beloved r1100s-boxercup against the new k1200r, which has the new 4 cylinder in line engine. the differences couldnt be bigger: similar weight (220kg), but 100 vs 163hp, sportposition vs naked, boxer sound vs. something hard to describe.
just drove the first 700km when taking the bike from frankfurt to italy, so couldnt go above 6500 rpm (red begins at 12000), but what a push! whichever gear you're in it just goes like crazy. i would have said the torque of the boxer couldnt be matched but it proves not to be the case. this engine feels like an electric engine and pushes all the time!
chassis feels great, the boxer was stable, but had to be taken down in the bend, the k is even more stable thanks to the huge wheelbase but just falls into the bends, really cool.the swiss alps were a great testing ground for that. i just need some practice and i will take it down very close to the tarmac (hopefully not too much!!) .
another great feature is the electronic suspension called ESA, similar to PASM in some ways. three positions, comfort, normal an sport, each in a version for one or two passengers and again with additional baggage. all i can say so far, is that you can clearly feel the difference between sport and comfort setting. i like the idea to be able to change suspension setup like that, because in real life i never changed the setting with the conventional suspensions, which results in always driving with the 'wrong' one.
a word to the brakes: sensational! must be the same feeling like trying out the new PCCB for the first time. there are two huge 320mm (!!) discs in front, the deceleration of the bike is just incredible and there are no panic moments thanks to ABS.
all in all my first impresssions are great, cant wait to try out some of the acceleration when i finally can rev it: 0-100 is 2.9s, 0-200 8.3s, guess it will scare the heck out of me..
so sorry to go off topic, but i thought some of you porsche drivers and bikers like me could be interested!
cheers
