    Boxer vs. in-line engine...

well, given that i am a porsche and bmw owner i feel kind of qualified and compelled to write on this topic..

except that this here is not on bmw vs porsche but bmw vs bmw!!

yes, they too build glorious boxer engines, thats in their bikes! so sorry, I'm going slighly off topic...

this weekend in swapped my beloved r1100s-boxercup against the new k1200r, which has the new 4 cylinder in line engine. the differences couldnt be bigger: similar weight (220kg), but 100 vs 163hp, sportposition vs naked, boxer sound vs. something hard to describe.
just drove the first 700km when taking the bike from frankfurt to italy, so couldnt go above 6500 rpm (red begins at 12000), but what a push! whichever gear you're in it just goes like crazy. i would have said the torque of the boxer couldnt be matched but it proves not to be the case. this engine feels like an electric engine and pushes all the time!
chassis feels great, the boxer was stable, but had to be taken down in the bend, the k is even more stable thanks to the huge wheelbase but just falls into the bends, really cool.the swiss alps were a great testing ground for that. i just need some practice and i will take it down very close to the tarmac (hopefully not too much!!) .
another great feature is the electronic suspension called ESA, similar to PASM in some ways. three positions, comfort, normal an sport, each in a version for one or two passengers and again with additional baggage. all i can say so far, is that you can clearly feel the difference between sport and comfort setting. i like the idea to be able to change suspension setup like that, because in real life i never changed the setting with the conventional suspensions, which results in always driving with the 'wrong' one.
a word to the brakes: sensational! must be the same feeling like trying out the new PCCB for the first time. there are two huge 320mm (!!) discs in front, the deceleration of the bike is just incredible and there are no panic moments thanks to ABS.
all in all my first impresssions are great, cant wait to try out some of the acceleration when i finally can rev it: 0-100 is 2.9s, 0-200 8.3s, guess it will scare the heck out of me..

so sorry to go off topic, but i thought some of you porsche drivers and bikers like me could be interested!

    cheers

    Re: Boxer vs. in-line engine...

I agree, nothing can match an inline-4 technology anymore in bikes, no V nor Boxer engine, even in torque, the equivalent inline-4 is superior across the whole powerband now, and they are lighther and have better dinamics. Of course the boxer and V-engine have their "charm" but perfromance wise and dinamically the inlin-4 is untouchable.

They are going crazy in the sportbike class, the new GSX-R1000 has 178HP!! from 1000cc and a weight like a 600cc bike, its crazy... if I had to choose what street vehicle is closest to the racing vehicle equivalent, I would say by far far far, a Hi-Sport class sportbike.

    Re: Boxer vs. in-line engine...

and thats the reason i didnt get a supersport, just too much, it always entices you to race! this one is a naked and you sit upright, the amount of flies hitting you will tell you when you're too fast!!

Wow - almost 180hp/L - that's fantstic! The best street cars can only manage 120hp/L (without forced induction). And power to weight ratio of about 2.5 lbs/hp (until my fat ass gets on ) - pretty incredible!

    Re: Boxer vs. in-line engine...

and combined with the relative low mass of the bike (around 180kg) and engine speeds up to 12-13k rpm...

But like turbolite says, the problem with these hi-sport sportbikes is that their performance and character seduce you to always race, and things can happen pretty fast. I often wonder how these thing can be legal and available to people with just a simple driver's licence, no wonder so many get killed.

    Re: Boxer vs. in-line engine...

Yeh Carlos, I've been contemplating getting a sport bike for years now but the safety concerns have allways held me back.. it's very temping though, price/performance ratio is awesome.

    Re: Boxer vs. in-line engine...

I was in Montreal two weekends ago and saw one of those in an underground parking garage wher I was staying. I was shocked at the way it looked, and took some pictures.

    Re: Boxer vs. in-line engine...

thats exactly my bike i am talking about. just came back an hour ago from a trip in the bavarian alps - fatastic weather, 30 degrees and 163 hp between the legs, just awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
man, will have to fix a race exhaust and some carbon parts - subito!

    cheers

The GSX-R1000 is incredible! Consider that it has more HP than the first Porsche 911S !!!!!

If you suffer from "throttle addiction disorder" stay off the GSX-R!

If you want to play with its top rpm band you are looking at doing already 115mph in just 2nd gear

Wow - that is amazing! Are the other 4 gears pretty tightly spaced or are the gears longer than needed (like a Porsche)?

    Re: Boxer vs. in-line engine...

I know, you can break the highway speedlimit in just first gear, ridiculous... about 87mph in first gear and 116mph in 2nd, the rest are tightly spaced except for maybe 6th but you only need that one past 155mph or so. Never used 6th at the track, its more for confortable highspeed highway cruising.

    Nice
