Story of a breakdown
Wednesday I had to make a round trip of 360 miles almost all of which was motorway. Drove to destination in the morning and car was perfect. Late afternoon started drive home, first 90 miles perfect then suddenly car lost power very briefly then was OK again for about a mile. Then lost power for several seconds, recovered, lost power again...
Pulled over onto hard shoulder (safety lane in UK). Checked all the guages - everything normal. Tick over smooth and normal at ~800 RPM. Tried revving engine - OK. So decided maybe problem had cleared up and set off again but after a few hundred feet again no power.
Called Porsche Assistance who said they would get recovery truck to take me home and then arrange for second truck next day to take car to my local OPC - about 10 miles from my home. Also said they would get loan car delivered to my home. After few minutes they called me back to say truck would arrive in 45 - 60 minutes which it did.
Managed to drive the car onto the truck ramp and off again at home. So later on thought I would go for short drive to see if problem had gone away - big mistake!!. first mile was OK but then started to lose power and before I got home engine cut out and would not restart. Had to push car off the road and leave it overnight in car park.
Thursday recovery truck arrived exactly on schedule at 8:00 am at my home, drove me to pick up car. Car started OK! Loaded on truck. Driver took car to OPC while I went home to await loan car which also arrived at promised time.
12:00 OPC phones to say found fault - fuel pump failed. ordered replacement for next day delivery (i.e. today).
Today 3:00pm OPC phone to say replaced pump, old pump definately faulty but car still cuts out and not yet found out why. Maybe pump fail caused another problem or another problem caused pump fail.
Guess I now have loan car for weekend instead of my 997S .
While I am very unhappy about the breakdown, I must say I have been very impressed with Porsche Assistance - quick, efficient everything done as promised.
Remains to be seen if OPC does good job, they were quick with pump diagnosis/getting part/replacing but of course have not yet fixed problem.
