    Story of a breakdown

Wednesday I had to make a round trip of 360 miles almost all of which was motorway. Drove to destination in the morning and car was perfect. Late afternoon started drive home, first 90 miles perfect then suddenly car lost power very briefly then was OK again for about a mile. Then lost power for several seconds, recovered, lost power again...

Pulled over onto hard shoulder (safety lane in UK). Checked all the guages - everything normal. Tick over smooth and normal at ~800 RPM. Tried revving engine - OK. So decided maybe problem had cleared up and set off again but after a few hundred feet again no power.

Called Porsche Assistance who said they would get recovery truck to take me home and then arrange for second truck next day to take car to my local OPC - about 10 miles from my home. Also said they would get loan car delivered to my home. After few minutes they called me back to say truck would arrive in 45 - 60 minutes which it did.

Managed to drive the car onto the truck ramp and off again at home. So later on thought I would go for short drive to see if problem had gone away - big mistake!!. first mile was OK but then started to lose power and before I got home engine cut out and would not restart. Had to push car off the road and leave it overnight in car park.

Thursday recovery truck arrived exactly on schedule at 8:00 am at my home, drove me to pick up car. Car started OK! Loaded on truck. Driver took car to OPC while I went home to await loan car which also arrived at promised time.

12:00 OPC phones to say found fault - fuel pump failed. ordered replacement for next day delivery (i.e. today).

Today 3:00pm OPC phone to say replaced pump, old pump definately faulty but car still cuts out and not yet found out why. Maybe pump fail caused another problem or another problem caused pump fail.

Guess I now have loan car for weekend instead of my 997S .

While I am very unhappy about the breakdown, I must say I have been very impressed with Porsche Assistance - quick, efficient everything done as promised.

Remains to be seen if OPC does good job, they were quick with pump diagnosis/getting part/replacing but of course have not yet fixed problem.

    Re: Story of a breakdown

yikes rh997, at least they know what the problem is i'm sure they'll have it sorted b4 you even notice!

    Re: Story of a breakdown

Sorry about your pumps. But, look on the bright side. When you get your car back on Monday, it will drive amazingly well compared to your loaner car.

    Good luck! Matt

    Re: Story of a breakdown

That is terrile, I'm so sorry to hear that!!!

I'm sure you will have the car very soon

    Re: Story of a breakdown

I had a car that had a very simular problem, and at first I thought that it was the fuel pump. In 1988 I had a Pontiac Fiero GT that would idle fine and then cut out when I gave it gas, while accelerating to speed. Sometimes it would start back up right away, and sometimes I had to let it cool down for a while. The problem got worse in the following days until I determined that the problem was the coil. I think that each cylinder in the Porsche has it's own coil, and I would assume that a service light would come on, if one of them were going bad.

    Just a thought. Good luck.

    Re: Story of a breakdown

    Suuuuucks.

Like my wife had this new Cadillac and within four-six months it left her powerless on the side of the road at least three times; think about it: A brand new car that has the reilability of an old junker! That POS is now gone!

Will be hard to do to the 997 if trouble becomes "routine"

    Re: Story of a breakdown

Probably nothing to do with it, but my old Golf lost power a couple of times due to the electronic throttle losing sync with the throttle pedal position. Stopping and starting would sort it out, but a bit scarey when it happens in the fast lane. Hope that won't be an issue with the new Porsche models, which also have e-throttles, don't they?

    Re: Story of a breakdown

    Also trouble here in belgium...
4.800km run until now, YEsterday my wife couldn't get the car in reverse gear...
THey had to push her out of her mothers driveway.
WheN i came home i tried myself and idd, reverse wouldn't get in...
After trying some time it worked...
Think it might be the beginning of the wellknown problem of the adjusment of the reverse gear.

    Re: Story of a breakdown

i'm keeping my fingers crossed so far my 997 is a happy camper

    Re: Story of a breakdown

Also keeping my fingers crossed, just done the Le Mans trip (about 700 miles round trip) car is running perfectly. I'm on 5,700 miles

    Re: Story of a breakdown

I have same experience as jboyko but in a Renault Clio 1.4 4door hatchback sedan. 4 cylinders, 4 coils. One of them burnt out so the car was basically running at approx 75% of full power. Was driving w/ a/c on, turned it off & regained a little power. Car won't cutoff as your did but lack of power is very noticeable.

Keep in mine to check w/ the mechanic whether they changed all six or only one. Changing only one might cause a shorter life span for the other five. When changing coil the best thing to do is to chang entire set, not only just the problematic ONE.

    Re: Story of a breakdown

    UPDATE:
OPC phoned Friday, they replaced the fuel pump and confirmed original was faulty but engine still cuts out cause unknown. So am still awaiting fix.

The loan car is a Renualt Espace 3.0 diesel which is like driving a bus after the 911. Interesting at first but now getting increasingly desperate to get the porsche back

    Re: Story of a breakdown

The same thing happened to me a few months ago. First, they changed the fuel pump but the engine was not working O.K.. Then they found that the tube from the fuel pump to the engine was obstructed (low pressure of fuel getting into the engine). They cleaned the tube and inyectors. No problems since then.
Tell Porsche mechanic to check the pressure of fuel into the engine. In my case, the pressure was something like 2,5 bar and it should be more than 5 bar. Sorry but I dont remember the exact measures.
    Good luck
