    Porsche back on racetracks!

The German car mag says that Porsche will start at Oktober 1st at the 1000-miles-race in Road Atlanta.

Roger Penske will support the LMP2-prototypes. The weight will be 750 kilogramm and the engine is a V8.

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

why dont they just make a flat 8.

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

Maybe for marketing? The Panamera will get a V8.

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

They already have a race-ready V10, shaving two cilinders is easier that creating a brand-new flat-8

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

    Your right...

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

What I have read is that the LMP2 racecar will be powered by the 911's Flat-6...

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

    AMS said V8...

    I really don't know, what's true

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

An F-6 is what the magazine I read said, but I don't trust mags so F6/V8... who knows... we will see soon enough

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

Motorsport.com has it a full on race motor 3.4L V8. This engine should be very nice and could find its way into other series.

    I am the winner!

    V8

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

I am planning my vacations for next year, what are the chances that the Porsche LMP2 would appear at LeMans?

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

    3.4ltr V8 with 480 bhp

I'd take THAT in the new GT3...

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

This little engine looks to be a real screamer. Over 10,000 RPM, safe to say it will sound sweet! If Porsche states 480HP that means it will make well over 500HP. Look to see this engine in other race series and maybe a detuned version for the road.

Porsche wants to win the ALMS-series. LeMans was not the main target. So the car could be to slow on the straight course in LeMans. Maybe Porsche is affraid of the new Audi-prototyp.

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

I don't think Porsche is afraid of Audi or Audi's prototype. It's more likely their respective managements have some informal non-agression pact. As long as Audi wants to compete in LMP1, Porsche will stay away.

Another theory that fits is the one about profit motive. Porsche is not presenting the LMP2 as a factory sponsored effort. They are producing the vehicle to sell to private teams. Porsche will get back into prototype racing with minimal out-of-pocket expense. A factory backed LMP1 effort would be very costly.

    Re: Porsche back on racetracks!

Porsche fears no one! It was stated that the LMP2 project was mainly for customer based racing. Porsche would take the chassis development and use it for a LMP1 car, after the LMP2 project was well under way. The Porsche race dept has to make money too like in the 911 RSR cars. The LMP2 project was for the US based ALMS but, I wouldn't be surprised to see it race at Lemans.

I had read in Panorama that someone had overheard Porsche reps at Daytona speaking of this progression from LMP2 to LMP1, but in the current issue of Panorama the thinking is that it may be LMP2 only, so as not to compete with Audi, at least for now.

I agree about Le Mans. I think we can expect to see Porsche's new LMP2 there at some point.
