New Car - delay due to paint blemish - advice ?

    Hi

I was expecting to pick up my 997s today. I got a call saying that during the final inspection post valet a small "paint blemish" was spotted under the varnish on rear wing.

They tried to "slap the paint" to sort out - but had to fix by spraying the area. Should be ready Friday.

OK - I am pleased they called. However I am

They are telling me I will not spot anything - however I am expecting a pristine car and a spray job in my mind will never be perfect as per original.

Should I be concerned ? Should I reject the car ? Should I write to Porsche.

Let me know views. I must say it has sightly taken the shine off the experience.

    wait and see,
    take a professional with you,

if it's ok, let it be,

succes with your 997s, enjoy every moment

Fargo's advice to wait and see is a very good one... the guys doing the spot work on the paint wont allow it to look bad. I think it's worth a look.

In the meantime you may want to find out what options you have in case the paint job comes out below par.

    Good Luck

When I picked my car there were some marks that needed redoing. It was a perfect job. I just got over it.

Re: New Car - delay due to paint blemish - advice ?

    Get it and start driving!

Re: New Car - delay due to paint blemish - advice ?

Thanks all - I will ignore any more posts to this thread as I am now in a very positive frame!.

I will still be pushing for 50% off

Re: New Car - delay due to paint blemish - advice ?

My front bumper arrived with a small crease by the fog light. They ordered a new front bumper skin and had it repainted. It looked perfect but it's not hard to match black. I was also told that if I didn't like it, they would swap it with the next black car that came in that wasn't already sold; nice offer that wasn't necessary. It's easy to be too anal- get that first tiny rock spot or swirl and you can relax and run it hard like it was meant to be driven.

Re: New Car - delay due to paint blemish - advice ?

sometimes cars are damaged during shipping

most of the larger car companies have facilities at the port to 'fix' these flaws.

however, most of the time this information is not disclosed to the customer.

very worrysome in my opinion, but not something you should lose sleep over.

if you can't see it, why obsess.

Re: New Car - delay due to paint blemish - advice ?

How obviously in your face is the damaged/repaird area?

If the mess were on the middle of the hood (bonnet, or large horizontal front body panel which covers where the spare is supposed to be ) I would be VERY concerned that they do it right.

The more distant the problem area is from being obvious the less I would worry.

If in a few years it starts to look like crap and it wouldn't cost an arm and a leg to re-paint I wouldn't worry about the job they do too much.

If it were going to possibly be a repaint job of the whole fender or top of car then I would be really concered right now.

    Why obsess?

    1) It may become noticeable 3 - 5 years later with normal fading.

    2) It can effect resale value, should it become known to a buyer. An honest seller should make known such things to a buyer.

    3) You are paying for a new car. Any repaint is never as good as the factory paint job.

    I would reject it.

Yes, but odds are you're going to need some touch-up work during your ownership anyway (stone chips, possible parking ding), so unless you're going to just stick it in the garage and polish it... Don't worry about it!

Re: New Car - delay due to paint blemish - advice ?

Don't worry about it - mine was delivered with a small mark on the roof - you could only notice it by looking very closely but I was still unhappy. They spent a while polishing it out and whilst you can still see it if you look VERY closely, I have to be honest and say that I have not even thought about it until I read this thread.

You would be mad to reject the car unless it is really obvious IMO.

    Good luck.

Re: New Car - delay due to paint blemish - advice ?

It's a tough call. Resprays don't have the adhesion and durability that the factory paint has, due to the chemical preparations and heat curing done at the factory from the metal-up. But where your damage is, is a fairly innocent area, that if done well would not be detectable and last practically forever. Wait and see how it looks. I would not accept a re-sprayed nose, because the nose is in the line of fire, and gets the most abuse. Yes, it will get chipped up with time. But with a re-sprayed nose, the rate of degradation would be EXPONENTIALLY HIGHER. In other words, it's in the hardest-hit areas that you truly want the factory paint. It sounds like backward logic, but it's not.

As for the "oh, it'll get dinged up anyhow, and you'll need touch-up work in a couple years...". Using that mode of thinking, you may as well buy a hearse, because we're all going to die anyhow, right?? I fight tooth and nail to keep my car pristine, and I enjoy driving it that much more when it's tight and right. Keep your standards high, and the need for "touch ups" will be fewer and further between.

Re: New Car - delay due to paint blemish - advice ?

Picked up the car today - looked 100% inside the showroom and outside - so no concerns from me.

Unfortunately thunderstorms all around the area, however great first impressions. I will post some pictures soon.
