DaveGordon:
Thanks, Whoopsy - I was just getting a bit irritated by some peoples' claims that this magic diffusor did away with the need for a wing. I had a look at it at geneva and the contours are the same as on the GT3's I showed above - so little or no extra wing effect. Probably just a little smoother, and has the longitudinal fins to help a bit too.
+1
I doubt that this diffusor aka "welded oven plate" on the R with it's tiny vanes can have much aerodynamic effect.

It makes a difference in the sales brochure.
The ground clearance on road cars is too large for a diffuser to produce anything like the downforce it would on a race car.
Correct. Even the front splitters are usually too high off the ground to be completely efficient. Those diffuser fins might reduce lift rather than truly generating downforce.
When I looked into this for my Lotus, which has a completely flat underbody, it was interesting to see how large the fins had to be and how extended the diffuser had to be out the back of the car to make a noticeable difference in the cars that raced in Lotus Cup USA.

Actually the fins on the R is already too low for street use.
A number of R owners already had them scraped. Another owner's car is not even delivered yet, but the dealer already noticed scrapes on the fins and will replaced them free of charge, they suspect it was scraped while coming off the transport.

You'll get the chance in a few months when the manual GT3 comes out. Better car, same involvement.
Definitly, but with 911R, i know i can't buy it, but by GT3, it pushes me to buy and then i don't know what to say to my wife,

Jason is such a good presenter, he's made Motortrend one of the best Car channels. Always entertaining - and not repetitive (think Top Gear) , at least not yet.
And now he made me want a 911R - which I don't want since I mostly enjoy
driving on the track and our roads are crap.
BjoernB:Best Review I've seen for a rather Long time ! Finally somebody not talking about numbers - but about the fun-factor - something a few here have been trying to highlight for quite some time !
His documentation of all the mechanical noises now audible was brilliant!

What a fantastic review !!! I hope Porsche hears that and listen to it , and start concentrating much more on the feeling then the performance ( which has reached a level nearly no one can use anyway ) .
I will listen if my RS also makes that throttle sound on stand still

Easy... "Honey, I decided to spend less on cars and got the cheaper version of the GT3, it doesn't get a rear wing or auto-shift for example, heck, half its windows are just plastic...even saved on the emblem on the hood, look, instead of metal its just a cheap sticker! ... sure, its a bit noisier inside and not as fast but I will live with it, afterall, its the responsible thing to do. Now! lets go out to dinner tonight and afterwards you can show me how proud you are of me!"

My wife refuses to drive in my 964. She says it smells old , feels old , is too small etc....
She's right, of course.
But that's what is so great about older 911s.

@Lukas: that is not a PTS it is one of the three special colors offered by Porsche for the R; the other being Lava Orange and Black (on top of the standard Silver/White colors) . The real PTS are starting to roll out now , few have been delivered (a Sport Classic Grey in Geneva and a Slate Grey in Hamburg).
