Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

The 381 HP powerkit is coming for MY 2006.
It will be available for the 997 Carrera S, Carrera S Cabriolet, Carrera 4S and Carrera 4S Cabriolet (yes, you heard it right, 997 Carrera 4S Cabriolet).
Cost in Germany: around 12000 Euro incl. 16% tax.
The PSE seems to be part of the powerkit but I don't have a 100% confirmation for that.
We don't know yet if a retrofit kit will be available.

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

    Rc...

do you think it's worth it for me to wait and get the 997s with powerkit?or the c4s pk?

also when you say my2006 does that mean it will be on sale from january 2006?thank you.

    MY2006 = Model Year 2006 = starting late July (a few cars only)/late August.
A lot of end of MY2005 cars already have the MY2006 improvements like the MP3 playing capability of the PCM2 system.
As far as I heard, the Powerkit should be available around late autumn/winter 2005. I don't know if this means you can order it by then or if the first cars with powerkit are delivered to customers.
I'm afraid a retrofit won't be so easy, the whole engine would have to be taken out. But I still hear rumours of a retrofit kit, so let's pray.

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

    Thanks for the confirmation Christian!!!
Looks like I could get my car in September!

Francois, since our last video conference, you didn't tell me if you decided to go for the powerkit or not??? I hope you went for it.

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

From a reliable source I have heard that all tested 997 S with powerkit had at least 390 hp. No one car did have less measured hp.

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

Don't you guys think it is over priced.. And do you think one should wait for an aftermarket kit like thoes to come and which might have much more power and tq..

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

Yes...I do think it is VERY expensive. The power kit plus a few other options put the price of the 997 S in the GT3 range..!!!
And what if Porsche , in the next facelift of the 997...around MY2007 ? ... have a power encrease to 381 HP ? That would just be so frustrating if one has purchased the power kit.

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

What a face lift in 2007.. You have to be kidding me.

The 997 facelift will be EARLIEST around MY 2008.
And power is rumored at 375 HP.

You could wait for the MY 2020 facelift, it may be able to fly.

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

    A newbie question...
Will this powerkit be availible in the US??

    Thanks

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

    yup

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

i test drove the 997S for the first time today.. it was everything i ever expected from a porsche.. except.. i felt it should have been faster!

My order of 997S will not be delivered till december and i feel so pressured to add powerkit.. that said..

i don wanna be disappointed with feeling a very minute diffrence from this kit.. i want to feel a diffrence pull from the engine with this kit.. the powerkit has a hefty price tag on it and i could really tick either every option in the porsche catalog OR get this..

Any reviews or performance info on the powerkit would be seriously appreciated

    Peace

Does your present car feel faster?

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

i dont think so.. i drive a slightly modded evo.. its a nice car.. performance wise..but its hard to live with on a daily basis..

don get me wrong.. the 997S is fast.. but i might have been expecting too much to begin with.. thats why im considering the powerpack.. wondering if the money is worth the diffrence

It depends on what you are used to. I would drive my son's Z-28 Camaro and it felt "faster" even though I know that my Porsche is the faster of the two cars. Some cars have brute power where it is easy to get the car sideways with the stab of the gas pedal. Because a Porsche is so easy to drive (and forgiving) it gives the impression that it is not as fast. And with the weight over the real wheels it stays planted on the ground. That may be what you felt. But if you look at the numbers, there aren't many cars out there as fast as a 997S, either in 0 to 60, 1/4 mile, or around a track.

    Phil

I enjoy my 997 Carrera S mostly for the fantastic suspension/steering setup. This car is so much fun.
Would I love to have more power? You bet. I owned a 996 Turbo with more than 543 HP, I still remember the fantastic power feel. I enjoy a similar feel in my Cayenne Turbo Powerkit but of course this thing weights 800 kg more than my former 996 Turbo.

The question is: for what purpose do you need more power?
The 997 Carrera S does 0-100 kph in around 4.6 seconds and 0-200 kph in 16.1 seconds. There are not many cars out there in the same price class which have the same performance.

If you are not satisfied (the 997 Carrera S is from 0-200 kph slightly faster than the 996 Turbo Tiptronic, 996 GT3 MkI, Ferrari F 355, Ferrari F 360 Modena, BMW M3 Coupe E46 (incl. CSL), Audi RS6, etc.), maybe you should go for a step higher and wait for the 997 Turbo. This is what I'm going to do, hopefully I can afford it.

    I knew it .

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

thanks fellas.. i couldnt sleep on this.. i went back to the dealer and asked him if he wouldnt mind racing my evo for 1 k in the demo car..

I just understood what you said phil.. i had to work so hard in my evo just to play catch up with the 997S..

i was soo impressed.. i guess it was just the cursed auto trany that sort of killed the fun of it all... the stock package is good.. now if i can only find something to kill the time till december..

khalidaij, your demo test drive was in a 997S Tiptronic or 6-speed? Hmmmm.... my one and only 997 test drive (S model 6-spd) before ordering left me with distinct impression that this thing is freakishly fast.

True, I haven't had anything as over-top as 543hp 996TT like RC, my personal driving history context for 'fast' being E46M3, E39M5, early 80's Ferrari BB512 & Lambo Countach, BMW Z8 dabble.

What swept me in with these 997S is that the fat section tires just hook up with pavement and launch you like a javelin.

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

No one said anything about TQ gains.. I know the S develops 400NM.. But how much more TQ will their be with the power kit.. Please please someone get this information..

    Theoretically none, same torque.
Engine size is still 3.8L which means one should feel the additionnal in the high rpm range, powerkit should come alive between 5500 and 7500 rpm range approx. which means it'll be awesome on track and during spirited driving but almost identical to normal 997S in normal driving.
Still waiting on Porsche's press release though.

Hasn't that been the case with other powerkits (excluding turbo)?

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

For 26HP your paying so much.. and with out any TQ gains know.. Think it's really really over priced and I never though I would say this but I can live with 26hp less and be happy that I saved some money and leave it for future investments for the car..

Fair enough, but also bear in mind that 997S powerkit does 0 to 100 kmh in 4.6 secs, 0.2 secs gain, it's huge, regardless of the significance of 0 to 100 kmh times.
Knowing Porsche's clever marketing, I believe it does it in 4.5 secs but cannot advertise that it's just as fast as the 996 GT3 and top speed over 300 kmh, again, it's academic, but if you want that kind of performance gain from a tuner, it's gonna break warranty, not be as reliable and probably cost you as much.
Also bear in mind that the powerkit comes with sport exhaust (tbc but 90% sure).

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

    Fanch,
May I ask how much does the PSE cost.. Because I am trying to see if it is possible in anyway.. And can't seem to put it into my mind that this is worth the money..

12,000 Euro.. = 53,399 Dhs.. My currency and that's heck a lot.. I can go out and buy another car for that kind of money.. LOL..

Sorry if I sound like an ass hole but I want to be convinced even slightly ...

    If you...

    a) have enough money
    b) can live with the fact that you won't get much back when reselling
    c) don't expect the 997S with PK to be worlds apart from a standard 997S

    ... get the Powerkit.

If one point of the aforementioned doesn't apply, stay with 355 hp.

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

    I totally understand you.
Even me am still not 100% convinced (99% though thanks to RC )
I am not sure but I think sport exhaust is something like 1700 Euros so also very expensive.

Re: Powerkit with 381 HP - CONFIRMED

I share the same opinion as Rossi. In my view:

    - its way way way too expensive
    - its not big enough difference in performance
    - the Powerkit HP figure should have been offered from stock but Porsche wants to milk the cow for all its got in terms of engine outputs, so it makes me more reluctant to give them the extra money they want for it, which on top of it its a ripoff for its clients.

However, it all boils down to personal opinion, so others may still see it worthwhile.
