Correct warm up temp before hard driving

I get my 997s tomorrow . It will need running in of course, however what is the wisdom around ensuring the engine is warm before hard driving - water term, oil temp?. On my M3 it was to wait until oil temp hit a certain mark on the guage.

    Thanks

As soon as the oil temperature is hitting the 90*C mark, you're free to go...
Also don't be surprised if you get 120*C and more after/during hard driving, this is normal.
It is also interesting that it usually takes around 10 km to get the oil temperature up to 90*C. Our Cayenne Turbo needs only around half of that distance to go up to 90*C and although I drive it hard too (especially when on the Autobahn), the oil temperature actually never goes beyond 90*C, not even now at outside temperatures of 30*C and more and the 500 HP powerkit retrofit.

Very important for 997 Carrera S hard driving is actually the tire temperature. I found the Michelin Pilot Sport tires to be extremely sticky but only if they reach the right temperature. They don't like low temperatures at all and you also need a few thousands of km until they really come up strong. Especially over the first thousands of km, be careful with chrono sport usage and/or turning off the PSM.

don't want to be a nitpicker but from 80* onw you can drive hard.

Well someone won't be sleeping tonight!!! Looking at your location are you getting it from our friends in Ferndown - if so say 'Hi'.

If you're interested keep an eye on the boards for our Rennteam meets - a number of us, currently only 987 owners from the south have been getting together for a few cross coutry blats which you're welcome to join.

Oh, and if you're wondering about the mad Avatar, ask them at the dealers tomorrow about the mad woman with the rabbit ears - they're still talking about it....

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

Yes - off to ferndown at 9:00 sharp. I will post a few pics when I pick it up. I have been following the board constantly for past 4 months!.

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

I always wait for my M3 to oil to get hot before getting frisky. same will be true when my P-car arrives.

As a matter of fact I even allow the car to warm up a bit just sitting there. Even though they say just drive off with it cold, I think this advice is to more to protect the environment (reduces emissions). So insted I selfishly protect my $100k car by letting the temp guage at least move a bit.

yeah I know I know: I'm probably carboning up the valves.

I was down there this afternoon. Hope they treated you well. Would you be interested in tagging along on the next Meet? I think Dreamcar is organising.

Chapelgate seemed to be a little oblivious to the 2006 PCM change. Why don't OPC's just read Rennteam?

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

Dreamcar has been providing advice on a couple of things offline and mentioned a meet. Put me on the contact list.

    dambox,

Good morning, its 8.25 am here in the UK and just in case you've forgotten, I thought I'd remind you that you have a 9.00 am pick up at your PO dealer.

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

lol med! congrats dambox, pls post pics upon picup! btw did you get PSE?

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

    Hi
Slight delay (see previous post) have got over that and will now be picking up tomorrow @3pm.

Yes I did order the PSE/BOSE. Midnight blue with Stone grey interior.

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

Look forward to seeing (and hearing) your car on our mutually local roads. Julian Esposti at Chapelgate (excellent) did send me some info on the PCM update (which you should have and I won't).

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

great colour combo dambox! can't wait to see the pics!

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

    Congtrats!...

Make sure to whiten teeth ... excessive smiling likely to occur while in the car

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

    RC,

    Why do 997's have different tires ? ROW/US ?
    I have Pirellis PZERO's. What's the difference vs. the Michelin's ?

The Red PZERO emblum on the Pirellis look cool.

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

i'm no tyre specialist, maybe it's easier to attain pirellis than michellins in the states? i've got the michellins on my car

Re: Correct warm up temp before hard driving

I took delivery in Germany - my car has got Pirellis!
By the way - my previous 996 had Pirellis too.
