996TSCab to keep me "occupied" until 997TSCab?

Open question for everyone: I am #4 on my local dealer's wait list for the 997TT-I'm waiting for the TSCab, and I wonder if the TSCab won't be ready until the end of 2006 at the earliest. There's a 2005 (996) TSCab-black ext./black soft top/black full leather int./6-speed manual at my local dealer available now listed around the $150K range. It could certainly keep me sane until the 997 replacement comes out and would be fun for this summer and next (and I could use it in winter with its AWD). Financially, I wonder how much it might be valued at over 12 months from now assuming no mega mileage (that might be hard to avoid ) or major dings are put on it, given the factors involved: immediate depreciation from being "used," depreciation from 12 months of time, replacement by the 997TT, to name a few? I can handle the entire transaction financially if I wanted to, I'm just not sure if ANY car for 2 summers and maybe part of the winter is worth that price. I might be able to get the selling price of the 996 dropped to the $130'sK range, I do have a 1999 M-Roadster that could cut off another $15K since I'll sell it, it's mainly a question of how much might I get for unloading the 996 ? in the fall of 2006. Ahh, the price we pay for our recreational habits! Any thoughts?

I've done it so you know my answer

Re: 996TSCab to keep me "occupied" until 997TSCab?

Just jump right in, that's what I've done. Depreciation is a fact of life with these cars and can never fully justify or rationalize any decision that involves buying sports cars.

Re: 996TSCab to keep me "occupied" until 997TSCab?

You can get this $149 msrp car for $139. It's at Brandywine. Not a smart move FINANCIALLY though imo if you intend on getting into a 997 Turbo when it first comes out. It would be smarter to get into a 997 cab/997 S cab for a year or so.

Re: 996TSCab to keep me "occupied" until 997TSCab?

imo you'll lose $25,000 plus. Consider the market for a 996TT S once the 997 TT is out. You're not going to find many people paying $125,000 for a used outgoing model when they can get the newer, more hp,yada, yada, yada 997 Turbo model. And of course there's also the difference between wholesale vs. retail. I've already been through this recently unloading a mint 5000 mile 996 Turbo. When you're buying everyone will tell you there will be collectors looking for the car. It's not until you look to sell because the 997 Turbo is out and you want it, that suddenly there's no "collectors" and it's simply a used outgoing model.

You echo what I suspect, so it comes down to a matter of am I willing to pay alot of dough for a hot car that I plan to replace vs. am I willing to wait for the replacement and stick with what I have (BMW M-Roadster) or buy a NA 997 and then trade up. As per our discussion on the 997 Board, I'm holding out for the 997T in the SCab form, which, if RC is accurate, might not come out until 2008-that's 3 freaking years away. . . .

If I would keep the 996TSCab for 3 or 4 years until its replacement arives, then I lean toward getting it, esp. if I get cooperation from the dealer price-wise.

Re: 996TSCab to keep me "occupied" until 997TSCab?

if you're talking about the car at the dealer in white plains. forget about it.

    PM me for more info

Re: 996TSCab to keep me "occupied" until 997TSCab?

Right, Stradale. The 993 Turbo has been built in much lower production numbers and even the 993 Turbo S doesn't seem to be a "collector's item" right now, at least over here in Europe.
Never buy a car based on a theoretical resale/collector value in the future. This may go very very wrong.
